Chapter 8 - Chapter 7: The Final race

The final event of the festival was being held at the 5000 kilometres of Daytona. It was the longest and most exiting event on the calendar for Goodwood. The circuit was Half Oval, half circuit Warren's team, which had a Ferrari 330 P4 was fettling it's car in their pits.

"Welcome to the last event of The Festival of Goodwood here, at the circuit where the legendary Daytona 5000 is held." James May started.

"Yes indeed, it's ten to five o'clock in the morning and basically everyone is tired, but not the drivers and the teams." Jeremy continiued.

"The cars here are the fastest on this festival up until now. There are many many legends from the teams that raced in on the Sebring, Le Mans and here at Daytona." Hammond explained.

"Now this will be the first endurance racing for many teams, especially the new "Collins Racing" team that joined us with a Ferrari 330 P4. It will be able to put up a fight on the corners, but on the straits? No chance." Jeremy explained.

"I can tell this will be a heated battle, because we have "Detroit Racing" with a Gulf Ford GT40! The very same one that Ken Miles raced in the Le Mans!" Hammond said.

While the trio were being broadcasted, the cars were already doing a smitting lap.

"John? Are you ok?" Jacqui asked.

"Yeah, I'm ok. Did you send the video to the police?" he asked.

"Yeah, I told them to wait until the end of the race." Jacqui explained. "When the race starts, the radio will have to be turned off, so we will have to talk with a chalkboard. So good luck."

As the first car crossed the line, the race began. There were many classes of cars participating that day, so John didn't have to start from the very back of the grid, but he did have to start the last in his class. The GT40 was fast on the straights, on the first stretch he overtook a few cars, but for then it struggled to overtake. The problem wasn't the car. It was it's history. Many GT40's broke down during Daytona and Le Mans, the cause being overheated brakes and gearbox. To prevent that Ford executives ordered the drivers not to push past 6000 rpm. John decided he wouldn't push that hard. Far too much was at stake.

During the daytime of the event no crashes happened fortunately.

Following into the night, the road was more visible than it would be, thanks to the light poles. Warren's team was still leading the race while the GT40 was only at the 6th place. Jacqui was watching as the cars accelerated through the stretch of the oval circuit. The main technician, Connor Danvers approached her.

"He's falling behind." He noted.

"The next lap, he and the Ferrari will get in for a tire change. Get ready." Jacqui said.

"We are." Connor said.

The next lap, John pulled into the pits first, the Ferrari followed suit. John got out for a driver change, he drove for 6 hours.

"I can't get infront. The car can push harder, I can feel it." John said.

Jacqui felt it wasn't the time to unleash the beast. It would come. The next 12 hours, his co-drivers held his position, it would be hard to get ahead. The car pulled in for a tire change and a driver change. John got in. Jacqui watched as he drove away from the pits. Warren's driver had made a gap of three laps between him and the GT40.

Only 30 minutes in the race and John only climbed one place. Jacqui was between a choice, to lose and let Warren get away, or to risk letting the car fall apart and let Warren get away. She grabbed the chalkboard and wrote something on it. Then she walked to the border besides the tarmac and held it up just as a John was passing by.

"7000+, Get that SOB" Was written on the chalkboard.

"Alright." John took a deep breath and slammed the throttle.

He overtook all the racecars that were blocking the way with no sweat. He had to catch up with the Ferrari which was 2 laps ahead. As he tried to catch up, it looked like he broke a few speed records from the 60s. Finnaly after several laps, he caught up to the three leaders at the "Shoe".

3. Porsche 910/6

2. Ford GT40 MkV

1. Ferrari 330 P4

He couldn't get ahead on the first lap, but he did on the next one, only a lap left and he was already catching up to the Ferrari. He was just next to him, the driver noticed the GT40 and pushed the gas, But he knew he couldn't get ahead. The both went head to head.

"John Prescott and Daniel Sanders are fighting for 1st place. The finish line is close!" Hammond said.

The GT40 was getting ahead slowly. The Ferrari tried to slam him into a wall. John predicted that stepped on the brakes and moved to the inside.

"Number 21, Ferrari 330 P4. Daniel Sanders tried to slam John Prescott to the wall, he swerved!" Jeremy said.

John crossed the line and won the Daytona. Warren tried to get away, but was stopped by a force of policemen and was arrested for kidnapping, murder, attempt of murder and several other charges.
