Chereads / Cain's Trade / Chapter 2 - Reincarnation

Chapter 2 - Reincarnation

Did this angel just ask me to.... sell drugs?

"I.... What."

"As long as you don't raise too much of a fuss about my involvement, and I'll have you keep your memories." She said as she summoned a pen and wrote something in the book.

"Let me clarify. You are to go down there, and get enough people lucid to get me replaced and prevent widespread corruption. You will be faced with stiff resistance and brand new challenges, unlike any you've had before.... Do you accept?"

Apparently she had been waiting for a chance like this for a long, long, time. Since he was getting reincarnated anyway, might as well do it.

"Alright. That's fair....So when do I go?" I asked the crazy angel.

"Now. I've wasted a lot of time with you already. You'll recieve your memories at age 5, but a few will trickle in before then. And don't expect any cheats, that isn't for scum like you." She says.

She pointed her hand towards me, and a ray of light descended from what seems to be the ceiling of this void and began to pull me away.

"....Well, not like I had any others plans." I mutter as the beam drags me away from the pitch darkness.

Crying disturbs the Maheen household. Night after night the child wails, ruining the peace of its peasant parents and their neighbours.

But they endured. For such was the task of parenthood.

Feeding him fresh wheat chowder and breastmilk, they wanted to ensure this child didn't end up like the others...sickly and eventually, dead.

Mrs. Eva Maheen looked into the eyes of her fifth child, rocking him under a full moon as she sat outside their humble home.

She spoke in a language unknown to the babe, and stroked his head gently. Tears fell from her eyes, but she wore a smile that could warm any heart.

Her husband, Mr. Terr Maheen arrived with his armor, having finished his patrol and leaving it to the next batch of guards. He walked over and crouched, carressing the baby's form. He kissed his wife, said some words, and then, carrying the child, they both went into the wooden apartment they called home.

Kayne Maheen. A five year old unlike any other. He was pretty normal for the majority of his prepubescent youth. Then when he turned five, he grew calmer, far too calm for some, but his parents took it as him becoming more mature.

His curiosity increased however. Suddenly he wanted to know every single thing. This was more childlike, but the nature and structure of his questions drew some looks, of admiration and of wonder. Still it was seen as normal enough.

Kayne Maheen was a strange lad, but he was a lad, so no one bothered.

Today ended like most others, and he ran into his room after telling the household goodnight.

He then sat down on the ground. And lost his childish gaze.

"6 days since I've regained...some of my memories." he said. "Lets go over what Ive gathered."

"I don't know the name of this world, but this city is called Longbreak. We are in the northwest region, and the lords stay in the centre. The lords don't really care about us, only really seeing us as pawns. Nothing strange there."

"This is the Maheen family. A peasant household. My father is a guard and my mother a bottle maker. I am the only surviving child out of the 5 they have had. Theyve been married 10 years....I'm their miracle"

"The people here....are pretty kind. They don't seem that oppressed and they are living quite comfortably in their humble states"

He sighed, putting his small hand into his black hair. "This is gonna be hard."

The next day, a week since he regained his memories, he started step one of his plan.

Make a lifelong ally.

He was grateful to start as a child. Any connections he made now would be pure and without doubt.

"Hey! What's up!"

"The sky...."

"Yo!"

"What?"

"Umm..."

"That isn't a word."

He forgot....these are medieval kids.

How the hell do you interact with medieval kids!

They are gloomy as hell!

One was talking about his dead brother like it was a Tuesday!

And he's six!

"Well there is one more person." he said, looking at the girl in ragged clothes. Too ragged to be real.

She was a disguised noble obviously...but he couldn't figure out why.

At first he thought she was bored and wanted friends, but she actively avoided the children.

So....the hell was her deal?

"Hey-"

"Be gone peasant." she said immediately, her amber eyes cutting through his soul.

He sensed it immediately. This was a wolf in the midst of puppies.

Too bad he wasn't a puppy either.

"What?" he said, wearing his old face. A cold, unfeeling visage that struck fear into his subordinates and even more so his enemies.

They maintained eye contact for a short while, before she sighed. "Whatever. I don't care for your childish games, so be gone." She said before looking away, ignoring his presense.

"I was just interested in what you were doing. You've been coming here for 3 months." he said loudly, causing a frown to form on her face.

"Do you really want to die that badly?" She said as she pointed to a guard who had placed a hand on his blade, looking fiercely at Kayne, ready to shorten the next census by one child.

...Shit he didn't think this through.

Normally the death threats were made if relations had gotten sour.

He expected her to act like a Mafioso. He should've realised.

She was a 5 year old with more power than a president!

Negotiations couldn't possibly be the same!

He cleared his throat. "You seem to need an informant. Right now, you stand out far too much. Your 'rags' have parts made of silk, which no commoner can afford. And your demeanor is too alarming. The risk to yourself is too high."

She looked towards his direction, glaring at his skinny frame. "The northern children should have no knowledge of silk. It doesn't rotate here. How?" She asked.

"It's just something my network picked up. Which I'm sure you'll want access to." He said, a devilish smile appearing on his face. "Of course it doesn't come without difficulty."

She glared at him once more, and while he still felt that she saw him as a bug, he was at least a beetle instead of an ant. "This was getting risky.... Fine. I won't tell you what for, but I'll tell you what to do. And I'll be using that network of yours, By next month preferably. Goodbye then...and consider this a token of good faith." she said as she tossed him a silver coin and stood up, taking her leave. "

He examined the coin, then jumped with glee...before immediately stopping and putting his hand on his head.

How the hell was he supposed to create a trustworthy network of spies in a month?
