Chapter 5 - Confession

"I knew." My mother whispered breaking the stealthy silence that had settled in the room after Catherine's dramatic exit.

"I knew that Matt was alive. I knew he joined the Circle and fell in love with Catherine." Shock settled opon us from my mother's sudden confession.

"He sent me divorce papers." She blurted. We were all succumbed in silence as her words took affect .

"You knew." I whispered to myself even though I knew everyone heard me- they are spies/spies in training after all!

"I'm sorry Cammie." My mum sighed.

"He was a hero to you and I wanted to keep that.  "

"You were just trying to protect me- and it worked. But when were you going to tell me?" I asked.

"I was going to tell you after you found out how he really died because even if didn't know." She paused then continued,

"I wanted to tell you after he quote un-quote 'died' but I saw how heartbroken you were and I couldn't bring myself to tell you that your own father was a traitor."

I could tell she was on the  edge of tears so I walked over to where she was sitting and wrapped her into a bear hug.

"You don't have to be sorry mum, if I were you I  would have done the same thing." I whispered into her glossy black hair. After we pulled away I said,

"Thank you."

"Why?" Mum asked confused.

"For everything." I answered.

She smiled understanding  what I meant, so I got up and walked back to my seat between Zach and Liz. Just as I sat down Bex spoke up and said, "The girls and I will be up in our room if you need us." While standing up. We all had to stand up because Bex really didn't give us a choice and we walked upstairs to our room.

We all sat on our beds in silence for a minute then I remembered the papers were still in my pocket.

"The papers!" I accidentally said out loud as I bolted up right. The girls looked at me like I'd gone crazy, a look I knew all too well by now.

"The papers guys, the ones Cammie got from her safe!" Liz exclaimed as she put two and two together like the genius she is.

I pulled the papers out of my pocket, unfolded them and layer them onto my bed. I looked at the papers I realised it was Matt's handwriting.

"Liz you read it." I said to her. And she understood being the kind person she is knowing that this is painful for me.

"Dear Cammie..."
