I felt like I was floating in a haze. I couldn't see anything , surround by thick black mist, but I could hear what sounded like two very concerned individuals conversing in hushed tones. There was something familiar about the voices, but they were distorted as if they were underwater. Intrigued, I focused my ears on the sound.
"You need to tell her, she deserves to know what's happening to her, what she is becoming." I heard the first female say.
"No" the second voice was also female, firm and stern in their refusal. "It isn't safe. There has to be something we can do to keep her abilities from manifesting."
"I told you from the beginning, I didn't agree with you decision to suppress her gifts, but I supported you and helped you to keep her hidden for as long as I could. You knew this was only a temporary solution. She is destined to be the most powerful of us all, mere cloaking rituals and power suppressants cannot halt the awakening forever."
"We can do something, anything." The second female was frantic now, as if clinging to any shred of hope she could grasp onto. "We have worked tirelessly these last few years to keep her safe. I can't give up. She's all I have left..." There was a sadness that hung on her last sentence.
"I know, but don't you think she could be better protected by preparing her? Teaching her how to harness her abilities so she can protect herself is certainly a better idea then continuing to hide her identity from her." The first woman tried to reason with the second, pleading with her to think logically about their predicament.
"Teaching her how to use her abilities will only alert those who would harm her to her whereabouts"
"If her abilities are manifesting like this, chances are they are already aware. You are doing more harm to her by hiding this from her. She needs to hear the truth, and she need to hear it from you, otherwise she will hate you for it."
"I SAID NO!" The second woman shouted. She took a sharp intake of breath, before exhaling slowly and returning to a calmer demeanor. "I don't care if she hates me...at least she will be alive..."she breathed. "Now will you help me make a stronger suppression serum, or not?"
There was a long pause before the first woman spoke again. "I am your friend. I love you and I understand your fear. But I cannot in good conscious support your continued effort to delay her transformation. Your fear is blinding you to the adverse affects the serum is having on her. The awakening isn't supposed to be so...so...violent. So painfu-"
"Let's not pretend the awakening is pleasant on any level. We both know it comes with its difficulties." The second woman spat, as if this thought alone was enough justification for her stance in the issue.
"Yes it does. Migraines, fatigue, all minor symptoms of the change. But THIS? This is not a common occurrence! Manifestations this severe have only ever occurred in cases of suppression or those who's minds weren't properly prepared for the awakening. That girl falls under both of those circumstances. And you and I know all to well how those cases end." There was another long pause before she continued. "You are free to do as you choose, it is your right as he guardian. But that girl has experienced more pain the last three years then any one person should, let alone a child. I will not help you subject her to more in a misguided attempt to protect her." I heard the echo of footsteps fading into the distance, and I was again left to float alone in the dark void.
