Chapter 31 - Mortals?

"I told you what we are. You and your people use magic. You learn to use certain types and train them. We look at and use magic in a completely different way. Both of us learned to shape magic and use it as a first source, before learning spells. Part of our training is in controlling magic and understand how to collect it. This planet only has a quarter of the magic that we have on our planet. Think of it as learning with a heavy sword that is the same size as your normal one but four times heavier. Once your able to use that sword well, switching back to the lighter sword will make you faster, and it will be easier to control," I explained to her.

Stell had gotten up and walked back to our fire. He was now eating the rest of the pristems.

"I See," Kade said and looked like she wanted to ask more, but she was cut off by the sound of a pair of hands clapping.

We both looked at the sound and noticed Diagon smiling.

"You are quite an interesting pair. I don't regret coming down here after seeing this little ordeal. The number of people that discover new magic on this planet is remote, to say the least, but they use it well. To watch you two, just create magic is quite literally magical," Diagon praised us as he walked toward us.

"Thank you, and I'm glad you have no regrets about joining us mortals down here," I said as we all walked to the fire and Stell.

Diagon laughs out loud at this comment.

"Mortals? Maybe the girl and the fairy, but you two? I'm not sure. I felt the first wave and rushed over. Stell's finger was a humming sword when I got here, and Kade was clutching the wall. Everything happened so fast. Then the book appears, and I heard and felt the wave. I know she has been exposed to the book many times while watching you, but even I felt staggered, with blurred vision. But you two don't even notice it, and I know you two have been exposed to the book only a couple more times than her. so, Mortals?" Diagon said with a wry smile.

"I guess that makes sense, but does that mean you two are the same as Diagon?" Kade asked as she picked things up.

"I don't think so. Blank appointed Diagon. I think is what Blank said to us in Nowhere," Stell said after we walked back to the campfire.

Stella offered the last pristems to Diagon, and he nodded, saying thanks as he took them from him.

"I think it's just my heavy sword theory again. We can still die or be killed. It's just a lot harder."

We talked some more about gods as we packed up, and soon we were at the bridge.

"So, I thought we could build a bridge over the bridge that is there," I started to explain, but was cut off by a squeal from Kade and a woosh of air.

I looked up to see Diagon and Kade flying through the air. How the hell was he doing that? They arced up in the air, and then down to land on the other side.

"Oh no, he doesn't," Stell said, backing away.

Diagon had put Kade down and then bent his knees. He flew into the air again and landed near the retreating Stell. Diagon walked towards Stell as he tried to back away.

"Don't even think about it. I am way too big to go flying like that," Stell said, holding out his hands, but then the smiling Diagon disappeared.

Stell's breath caught, and he froze, as I watched arms wrapping around him. Before he could react, both of them leapt into the air. I could hear Stell's roar as they flew. Once finally down, I could see Stell stumble forward, grabbing his stomach.

Soon Diagon was sailing back over to me, landing in front of me.

"I hope you're not as squeamish as your friend," Diagon said as he walked toward me.

"No, No, I just want to know how?" I asked with a smile.

"Oh? Well, it's just a matter of using magic like a concentrated blast of wind between your foot and the ground. After that, it's just a matter of timing to make sure you cushion your fall," Diagon explained as he stepped forward.

I put my hand up and stepped back, getting into a running stance and followed the steps. Using pure magic felt more familiar to me, and I turned to where we camped. Magic infused my feet' soles, and I moderated the magic as to only use a small amount. I stepped forward and released the magic.

I barely moved, maybe two feet forward, but that was enough. The feeling of pure magic without truly forcing it into shape was exhilarating, reminding me of back home. Soon, I could quickly move twenty to thirty feet in a single step as natural as walking normally.

As I stopped, I noticed Diagon staring slack-jawed. This look made me smile. I had barely even scratched my magic level. This ability must be how the battle mages fought against the U'talic.

Suddenly, an idea came to me. I used the magic to launch straight up five feet and then again while still in the air. I kicked and released magic, each one sending me in the direction of my choice.

Soon, I was to the other side, and I heard Diagon land behind me.

"What are you?" Diagon asked me.

"A fast learner is what Sister Glendra said," I laughed as I walked over to clap him on the shoulder.

I could see Stell still holding his stomach. Kade had found branch of a tree, and she was swinging in his face. While doing this, she was scolding him for acting like a little girl. Stell had his head lowered as Kade rebuked him, but then suddenly, his head perked up, and his nose went in the air.

I knew it was nothing I could smell because the sound of nails on glass came from the forest ahead of us and the bridge. The sounds of evil and strong magic filled the air, but it only came from one direction and one source. I turned to see a black silhouette coming from the forest.
