Five years have gone by since we lost our parents. William has learned to accept and adept to his chair. I will say this for him, since he always loved and played video games it's almost like nothing changed for him. I do try to help him as much as I can without making him feel bad about himself. He lifts weights so he has good upper body strength, he also designed an app so we can tell who is vampire, human, or werewolves. That app has made us rich. We have a house that is built to our specifications, you can't call It self aware, but it is damn close. William programmed It himself. It's not completely hack proof, come on nothing is. But with the way he set It up he would know if someone tries to hack in. It is mostly automated, I guess you could call it a smart house. It allowed us to buy a fully tricked out van that covers his wheelchair issues. We have a fully stocked trailer that is always connected to that van and ready to go at a moment's notice. And it has saved our lives a few times when the war has gotten to close to home, just like it does tonight.
It is 5:34 p.m., we start getting ready for dinner, William puts out the plates and I take the steak off the stove. We get everything in place to eat when we hear the yelling from two streets behind us. We can tell it's coming our way, so William hits a button and the house gets ready to lock down. We hurry out to the van and pull out of the driveway just as the nest of vampires jump the fence.
We have a full tank of gas so I don't plan on stopping for a while. About four hours later I pull us off the main road onto a side road in a forest area.
" Do you think this is a good idea? According to the map we have two wolf packs in the area."
"I know but I am getting tired, and I would rather be near the lesser of the two evils. Besides the vampires are only about two miles back there. I want someone close who can take them out for me. Let's just hope we find a good pack and not a rogue pack."
We drive down the road for another ten or fifteen minutes when a gate pops up in front of us. I stop the van and wait for someone to come out. Five men surround the van, I roll down my window and look at the man in front of me.
"You are trespassing on private property, why are you here?"
" Hello, my name is Kayla and this is my brother William. We were forced out of our home by a nest of vampires. As of right now they are about a mile and a half behind us. We are asking for asylum from them. We really don't want to die tonight."
The man looks at us for a minutes then he mind links with someone who gives him the okay to let us inside. As we pull in several men run out around us. Then a man came out to us and told us to park near the fourth house, so we did. After I got out the man walked up to me, I felt a strange pulling sensation in my chest. I didn't say anything, just walked around to Williams door. The The man walks over as well, "Why is he not getting out of the vehicle?"
"Because he needs my help to get out, now will you move."
Once the man moves I hit the button by the handle, the front door and the side door both opens. I remove his chair and position it in front of him. The seat maneuvers to where he can get into the chair. Then we both look at the man.
"Well where do you want us? What do you want to know? And YES, before you ask my brother is paralyzed. It's not a joke or a game or something we do to make people feel sorry for us. He has been in this chair for five years, so what's your next question?"
"WOW, okay wait a minutes to be honest I wasn't going to ask about it. What I was going to ask about is the vampires. What can you tell me about the attack?"
"Okay sorry, but a lot of your people are not that smart. this is your war and us humans are stuck in the middle of it. Also some of your people are not that smart because I have had to answer that question more times than you know."
"Has anyone ever told you how snotty you are? I have to say I like it. Now answer the other questions please."
"Fine, as we were getting ready for dinner we heard them attacking two streets behind us. We got out and ran as fast as we could but some of them saw us, that was four hours ago. Now we are here. That's really all I can tell you."
"Where were you coming from? You said four hours, how many miles did you go?"
"We came from Grants Pass, Oregon. I don't know the exact mileage."
"That's fine, the town and state works just as well. So I am assuming you would like to get some rest, this house is all on one level so you won't have any issues with your chair William. No get some rest and we will talk more tomorrow. Your van will be safe right here."
"Okay, thank you. umm what is your name please?"
" Sorry my name is Steve, I will see you tomorrow."
"Thank you Steve, good night."
After Steve started walking away we went into the house. We looked around a bit then we went to bed.
