Chapter 1 - Prologue

"Gather round Sapphira. I have a story to tell you. It is about our Origin. The Origin of Vampires," Father told me as the embers of the fire began to glow. I yawned and stretched as I walked over to Father.

"Father, the sun is beginning to rise. Shouldn't I be headed to bed?" I asked as I sat down by Father's feet. He smiled slightly.

"As a young Vampire yourself, you need to know the story of our Origin," Father told me. He patted me on the head. I looked at him as he stoked the glowing embers.

"It was a long time ago, before us Vampires came into existence. Two humans had been wandering for a while now and they were growing thirsty. And the female was plump with child. The male, who was her mate, spied a lake ahead. Relieved the two made their way to the lake ahead of them.

"When they reached it, they drank from it gratefully. Neither one of them knowing that the waters were cursed. It would grant them eternal youth as well as never falling ill or dying. But it would do this at a cost. The individuals that drank from these waters would forever be doomed to drink the blood of humans.

"Not knowing this, the man drank more than the woman and the curse began to take effect. The bones and muscles in his body began to change as the curse surged through his body. His senses became extremely heightened as his nails and canines elongated and sharpened. The woman noticed this and went over to see if he was alright when he went still. It was her fatal mistake.

"The curse had given his The Thirst. He turned on his mate, sinking his fangs into her throat and draining her dry. It was the blood spilled that sealed the curse and brought us Vampires into existence," Father said as I yawned.

"Now that you know the story of our Origin, keep in mind to never take more than needed. And do not kill. We need humans around so we can feed," he added as I looked at him.

"And no matter what, never let a human know what you are unless you intend to turn them or kill them," he finished in a firm voice.

"Don't worry Father, I won't let any human know," I said with a smile.

"Good," Father said. "Now off to bed with you. You need sleep," Father told me. I got up and hugged him and then went to my room. I drew the curtains closed and hopped in my bed, drawing the covers over my head. I closed my eyes and fell asleep.
