Chapter 26 - Chambre

Lefevre was transferred to the Manzano de Concepción prison, although we obtained authorization to interrogate the suspect, we were asked that a gendarme always be with us while we moved through the facilities.

When we get to the jail we see the huge concrete walls, so high that we have to raise our heads to look at the wire bars, between the walls is a gate with thick bars and outside this is the gendarme who will accompany us.

— Good morning —the person in charge of escorting us greets us— I would appreciate it if you did not speak with any of the prisoners, we prepared a room for you so that you can speak with Lefevre.

— So it will be —Rogelio answers for both of us.

The gendarme looks towards one of the two watchtowers, waves his hand for the gate to open, we pass into what could be said to be a front yard with several one-story buildings, they all look identical.

— What are these places?

— They are residences for us —he points to the left— on that side we have the kitchen and the dining room where the food is served.

Rogelio looks closely at the size of the houses— How do you manage to maintain such a large place with so few personnel?

— Only a third of the forces are here, the rest are in the Northwest and Northeast residential areas.

— Wow, then it's not that complicated to keep control of the place.

The gendarme makes a sound of disagreement— If by control you mean that no one escapes, then it is, but even with so many people, it is impossible to prevent ... things from happening.

I notice frustration in the gendarme— What kinds of things are you referring to?

He frowns in annoyance. "They don't need to know.

When we arrive at the entrance of the jail we are asked to go to a room to be searched, we are assigned different rooms, I notice that the gendarme who is going to check me is nervous.

— Something happens?

— No ... it's just ... I need you to take your clothes off.

That she gets nervous about inspecting me is something that amuses me, although I do not blame her, it must be uncomfortable to inspect someone so influential, I start to take off my clothes without saying a word, being naked I am asked to bend my knees and hug them with both arms, she puts on disposable gloves to check my body, being inspected is somewhat embarrassing, especially when she asked me to get up to check between my legs, my cheeks turned red.

After finishing the inspection I put the clothes back on.

— Thank you for your cooperation —she says in a kind but still nervous tone— this is not the usual procedure ... but since you will be in a room with one of the prisoners, we have to take additional measures.

He smiled to show him that everything is fine— You are doing your job, it is our duty to be an example for the nation and that starts from private acts like this.

— Can I ask you something indiscreet?

— Go ahead —I answer as I put on my pants.

— Do you really trust animanos or do you just follow your dad's instructions?

— I think it is time to move towards where the world is moving - I finish putting on my clothes - rejecting the Animans caused us to stagnate as a nation, if we want to progress we must accept change.

The gendarme was silent for a moment— I suppose things cannot be worse than during the previous government… horrible things happened in this place… I wish I could forget about them.

I approach her to place my hands on her arms— And the perpetrators of those acts are already arrested, we will not allow inhumane acts to happen again.

After finishing the inspection, I meet again with Rogelio who walks strangely— Is everything okay? You are walking strange.

— Walking weird? —He looks at the room where it was searched— It must be your idea, everything is fine, they just searched me —There is a little pause— Although they were very thorough. How was your inspection?

His face exclaims awkwardly— I guess better than yours —I notice that our gendarme guide returns— we better go where we came.

— Yes, you're right, the interrogation.

From the reception area we cross a door that leads to multiple corridors, we are surprised by the number of paths that can be taken, if we were on our own we would surely get lost.

— Where do the other corridors lead? —Rogelio is already beginning to walk normally.

— To the prisoners' blocks, each block has a common patio so that they can sunbathe and stretch their legs for a few hours, but we will go to the back, to some rooms that are no longer used now that the animanos rule.

The back room has a chair, because of how clean it looks it seems that it was recently fixed, but when I look closely at the corners I can notice blood stains, even in the face of such neatness I feel something gloomy inside, to the point that it makes me uncomfortable being inside, I have no doubt that this place was used as a torture room, when I look at Rogelio I realize that he also realized the kind of place we are in.

— Carolina —her voice sounds serious— swear to me that we will never return to those times.

I answer him in the same tone— Of course not, we joined forces to create a better Chile.

Footsteps are heard behind us— Please, I don't want to go in there! When we look, we notice that Lefevre struggles not to enter the room— I swear I won't speak, I have nothing to say, just leave me locked up!

When he notices that we are the ones who are going to question them, his worried attitude vanishes, he allows them to take him to sit in the chair, while two guards with pistols in hand watch from the entrance.

— And who are you? —Asks the confident Frenchman.

I walk over to Lefevre— Selina Iustitia, we're here to talk a bit.

The prisoner lets out a suppressed laugh— I have nothing to tell you, I just had to ignore what was happening.

Rogelio crosses his arms showing his disagreement with the answer— Even so, someone must have contacted you. Who was responsible for talking to you?

— It has been almost 10 years —he says nonchalantly— it is difficult to remember names, even faces.

Rogelio and I looked into each other thinking that we could negotiate, we both do not want to resort to violence, this is one of the moments in which we must show that we are a new government.
