Chapter 55 - Back to the Future Pt. 2

What was the result of preventing the 9/11 terrorist attacks? With the publication of the terrorists' plans, the interrogation of the terrorists captured from the planes (they didn't have suicide vests or cyanide capsules; plus, at this point in time torture was still be used for "enhanced interrogation"), and the provided intelligence files that the government would lie about WMDs in Iraq and launch a war at the wrong enemy as a result of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the warhawks were fortunately forced to change their plans.

And as for the legend of Superman? Posing for pictures and sharing my name with the rescued passengers from the plane, captured footage of my saves of the planes, and my commanding presence when interacting with the officers had many consequences both good and bad.

"Superman" became a household name. The feats accomplished eclipsed anything previously documented by the JSA in this universe. Saving four separate hijacked planes around the same time that were aimed to do maximum damage? A feat previously considered impossible by a single person. It changed the thought of what was possible for humanity. It started a superpower arms race.

When the governments weren't hunting for Superman to try to dissect him, they were experimenting with creating super soldiers, trying to replicate the powers of Superman, but finding it impossible with the physics-defying abilities and all. It did lead to increased budgets for defense and many new black ops initiatives to defend against the potential threat of Superman.

I revealed myself along the same previous timeline. There were questions of why I intervened on 9/11 and waited for years to come out of the shadows. I responded that the 9/11 attacks were on a scale that were too great to ignore, and also the government would use the tragedy to declare war on a country that had nothing to do with the attacks. I had to intervene to prevent such an atrocity. I implied that while I was out of the public's eye, I was training my powers, conducting research, learning about my home world, and many other things in order to become the hero this world deserves.

Statues of Superman were built at the World Trade Center and other areas, much to the chagrin of the skeptical government. They didn't build a statue at the Pentagon because that was the only place they could control, so they prevented acknowledgement of my save of the Pentagon. But everyone who was in the building, who knew anyone in the building who survived, and many throughout the government trusted that I was here to do the right thing. So these acts did ease my transition into a superhero.

I still allowed them to "test" me by using all their ordinances to attack me when I filmed the Superman movie. Oh yeah, I included a copy of my movie on the flash drive to help speed up production. Unfortunately, you can just use a digital copy and distribute it that way. You'd need film as the current projectors hadn't all been converted to digital projectors. Plus, there would be many questions why the actors in the film appeared a different age and there was no record of a movie being filmed in the filming locations. However, the copy of the film allowed me to quickly write up the script, storyboard all the action scenes, observe for potential flaws, and cut so much time from making the movie.

I placed Kelex entirely in charge of CGI. the visual effects were much better this time around given that we had much more time for post-production (and the visual effects generated by an AI with futuristic tech). With the James Cameron 3D-style Avatar filming still taking place, the movie was a huge success. It broke its previous record of $4 billion and made $4.3 billion. I'm guessing the improved effects brought more repeat film-goers.

For some reason, my past self insisted on having Ben Parker (my adoptive father in the movie) give me the "with great power comes great responsibility" speech in the movie. He also amped up the cheese factor by throwing in tons of Superman quotes.

SUPERMAN QUOTES HE SNUCK IN THE MOVIE:

"No matter where you go in life, there's always going to be the one person that wants to bring you down, so stay strong and face your problems instead of running away."

"Sometimes you have to take a leap of faith first, the trust part comes later."

"Dreams save us. Dreams lift us up and transform us. And on my soul, I swear until my dream of a world where dignity, honor, and justice becomes the reality we all share, I'll never stop fighting. Ever!"

"There is a superhero in all of us. We just need the courage to put on the cape."

And after Superman started the Justice League in the film, he said: "I once thought I could protect the world by myself. But I was wrong. Working together, we saved the planet. And I believe that if we stay together, as a team, we would be a force that could truly work for the ideals of peace and justice."
