The beginning doesn't always seem like the beginning. If you think about it, there was always an event that happened to cause another. Even being born was a result of two people sharing intimate moments. A trip over a stray skateboard because a child had to go to the bathroom and just forgot. A cat escapes the imprisonment of a home because the door was not quite shut leading to a shoeless sprint throughout the street to recapture the furball. Getting a nice viral infection because someone did not cover a cough or a sneeze. This beginning was really the middle of my life but it changed everything. This beginning was because of a fast sweeping pressure system unforetold by any weatherman or fortune teller.
So there I was once again running through the airport like a crazy person, it never fails. Every trip I have ever taken, that involves an airplane, turns out disastrous. Next time, I'm driving no doubt about that. Gate A7 where are you? Ten, nine, eight, seven! That's me! Two airline employees were standing there looking impatient. Oh well, not my fault my connecting flight was late. If I would have driven I would be on my own time and no angry employees. Walking through the fake hallway to the plane, I look at my ticket to find out my seat, 1C. First row? Maybe my day was not so bad. As I step onto the plane, I look up to see a smiling flight attendant, then over to locate my seat. Oh was I ever so wrong...
I plopped down in my seat and shook my head. I closed my eyes and thought/prayed, Dear God please don't let this child scream or cry throughout this flight. When I slowly opened my eyes a small hand was in my face. I jerked back in my seat and looked at the boy the hand belonged to. He was a scrawny, brown-haired, blue-eyed boy. It looked like he was about four or five. "Hi, I'm Johnny. What's youw name?" he asked. His voice wasn't annoying or squeaky. He didn't look sticky or dirty. I raised my hand to his and gave it a little shake. "Brock" I responded.
"How awe you today?" he asked.
I gave him a confused look, "Fine" I said, normally children do not talk to me and I do not talk to them.
"Do you like super heryos?"
"Do I like what?"
"Superheryos."
"Superheroes?"
"Yeah, like Supewman or Batman or Wolvewine or Captain Amewica…"
"I get it. Yeah, they are ok."
"They awe my favowite."
Apparently, I had an annoyed look on my face because his mother said, "Jonathon, please leave him alone," her eyes went from him to me, "Sorry." I half smiled back. The child was only quiet for moments before he started telling his mom a ridiculous story. He kept going on and on about how the moon was stuck in the sky and they needed to get it out. Johnny also told his mom in hushed toned maybe if I was feeling better later I could help them. This was going to be the longest trip of my life. About fifteen minutes in the air and I thought I might as well work since I was unable to sleep. I was working on a new ad my company had just been hired for. I ended up looking at old projects since I had no good ideas. The mother and son were obviously going on vacation. The boy asked about the beach and the zoo. The mom said, "How about Disneyland?" "I don't think I know where that is," Johnny replied tapping his pointer finger on his lips as if he were thinking very hard. His mom just laughed and said, "I'm sure we can find it." I wanted to suggest a place for them to go, but engaging this child was risky. He may never stop talking. My brother Brandon is a Marine, so I come to visit him a couple of times a year. Sometimes my other brothers, Bryon and Brody, would come and bring their children. When that happens it becomes a "family" trip. Since I don't have children the "family" thing is not fun. I couldn't help myself, "Legoland is pretty cool." Johnny perked up like that was a fantastic idea, "Yeah mom, Wegowand!" I could not help myself but laugh. Johnny apparently had a hard time with his R's and L's.
Then the atmosphere changed. Darkness approached abruptly and the plan began to sway. The streak of lightning and rumble of thunder. The airplane dropped.
