Chapter 66 - Their fights continue (2)

"You can't contact him?!"

Jeanne had been planning how to deal with the three show-offs on the battlefield, but the news she got from Bony was shocking enough for her mental processes to crash for a moment.

She could feel her profound connection to her master, but she couldn't communicate with him. Rather than being out of range, it felt there was something blocking their attempts.

"What, should we do?!"

Despite being an undead lord, Bony was unable to conceal its panic at this horrible news, especially because it knew how dangerous Dead Seilez Forest was. It had never felt like this since awakening a consciousness in this form, and so it was even more confused as to what to do.

"Tch, get yourself together!"

Normally Jeanne would be in the same condition, but as the one her master had left in charge, she couldn't afford to be weak.

"Now is the time when we should believe in master the most. Do you think failing to protect his property because you were worried is a proper excuse? You're an undead so take that unbeating heart and put it on the line to carry out master's order."

"That's, true. My apologies for that disgraceful display."

"It's fine. We have more important matters right now."

Jeanne's unexpected speech quickly returned Bony back to normal so it was able to focus on the battlefield once more.

Neither of them felt pleased about the appearance of the three who were dominating on the ground, but it was within expectations. Since the mastermind behind this force was fighting with quality over quantity, it was obvious that there would be foes that could match them.

Although all of the attacking demons were elites, the difference between them and those who had touched on the limit was like the heaven and earth.

"How shall we handle those three? Should we attempt to face them with the two of us, or fight one enemy each and let the army delay the other one?"

"Hmm, no, won't you get weaker as our number goes down?"

"True, but I should still be able to take care of one of them."

"How long until 'that' wakes up?"

"Approximately five minutes."

"...I leave the one using Poltergeist to you."

"Understood."

Once she gave the order, the undead lord went to face the Poltergeist user on the left with a squad of skeleton knights. Unlike what you would expect from a race specialized in commanding, the undead lord was better at fighting close range mainly due to its previous race being Skeleton Knight.

However, even without attacking directly, as long as it was with its undead army Jeanne didn't need to worry about it.

As the Poltergeist user was pressured by the undead lord, Jeanne wondered if the other two would try to aid him, but they remained focused on the enemies in front of them.

'It would have been easier if they wasted their efforts. Oh well, we still have to do as much damage as possible before the barriers go down.'

Jeanne then leaped from a balcony, but rather than a violent fall she glided towards the battle. When she gently landed, she could sense hostile gazes targeting her, but she paid them no mind and slammed her staff on the ground with both hands wrapped around it.

Unlike the undead lord, who was both an undead and a half-spirit, she had life so she couldn't pass through the barrier, but she didn't need to.

"Curse Ritual, activate."

From where her staff touched the sandy ground, ominous red light ran straight until it connected with the magic circle that the enemy force was trapped on.

Most of them were too busy to notice it, but as a murky black gas sunk into their bodies they were forced to fear it.

Normally a curse ritual would require proper sacrifices for it to function, but the blood that was spilled served that role. The three who had approached the limit managed to block the curse by covering their bodies with their own mana, but they weren't the main targets.

A few seconds after the gas was no longer visible, the curse took effect.

"Ahhh!!!"

The moonlight shone on the pitiful demons who mistook their allies for enemies and stuck their weapons in their backs. They had properly prepared amulets or charms to resist curses, but such things weren't powerful enough to beat the curse that was made with sacrifices of their blood and sweat.

The ones who attacked their leaders were quickly dispatched, but that was fine too. Without removing the curse it was only a matter of time before only those three were left.

'Damn it. What a tasteless tactic.'

Of the three, the one shooting lasers felt discomfort at having to kill her comrades, but she transformed that feeling into killing intent. For her, what was just a mission became a change for vengeance.

As she eagerly fired her lasers, Jeanne noticed that a path had opened that freed her line of sight of obstacles. At this point, she didn't have to make a move, but felt the urge to.

She rose her right hand and kept only her thumb and index finger extended, with the other fingers closed. She then summoned a white blaze to float in front of her index finger and continued pouring her mana into it.

Jeanne felt no trouble using this spell, but thinking of the one who showed it to her made her heart flutter.

"White Blaze Cannon."

In a highly condensed form, a beam of white light was unleashed from her finger. It made no sound, only her trained instinct for danger allowed the laser woman to detect the spell right after it was cast and barely escape its direct path.

However, her shoulder that shouldn't have even been grazed was severely burned by the heat that came from the beam. Furthermore, her natural healing abilities were also very slow in response to the wound due to the hint of curse magic that was added. The woman stared back at Jeanne in horror, only to see her charging another spell to finish her off.

She wasn't able to leave the area of the magic circle so at this rate her death was inevitable, but that wasn't the problem for trained killers like them. The problem was that they would fail to complete their mission.

"Sword!"

At the same time as the woman shouted, a rush of sand blocked Jeanne's view of the inside of the barrier. Her Magic Eyes were still working fine but before she could adjust to them and attack, she was frightened by a black sword that the swordsman took out.

The moment she saw it, she constructed a barrier for herself and the castle behind her and urgently warned Bony through telepathy.

"It's a glutton blade! Brace yourself!"

Close to the end of her warning, the man swung the black sword. It was a normal swing though an exquisite one, but that wasn't even the tip of the iceberg.

The sword didn't touch the barrier or the magic circle, yet both shattered after the swing, and the ground exploded with dust covering the battle as a result. This was the power of the sword he had, a glutton blade.

No one knew how many of them were created or who forged them, but despite their various shapes and colours they all shared the same terrifying ability. They could eat the magic of anything that affected the user and transfer that energy to the wielder. With this blade, all curses and negative status effects were useless and few mages could even scratch him.

It wasn't all good points but it was definitely fitting for a weapon also dubbed, mage killer and magic eater.

'I didn't expect for them to take out something like that. I suppose I should be proud that they're taking master this seriously.'

Even after getting rid of the barrier the curse didn't vanish, but they were no longer restricted in the same space and therefore it would be much harder to stop them from entering the castle.

'I need to hurry.'

Before they could switch gears, Jeanne tried to locate the laser woman so that she could kill her, but the swordsman had made her his target and was charging towards her with the glutton blade.

Thanks to the property of the weapon, physical enhancement spells or techniques using mana didn't work on him, but he didn't need that to reach a speed that Jeanne found hard to react to.

Even when he was right in front of her, she couldn't get a clear view of his face but his eyes shone red with killing intent as he swung his sword. The barrier she had created in case the glutton sword's effect range was larger than expected, shattered without resistance as the sharp edge approached.

Jeanne showed no anxiety as she used her staff to block the sword, but at this time when she was occupied, a red figure flashed past her.

"No!"

She didn't get a good look but Jeanne was sure that it was the laser woman. She wanted to intercept her but neither her nor Bony had that sort of leeway. It would be bad enough if she damaged the castle, but if she hurt Kaili or Lily...

'I have to think of something!'
