Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: The Runner Life

???'s Perspective.

With the radio going silent, it only meant that an ambush was coming. Me and the kid need to get the hell out fast! Searching the dead guard's body, I find the keys for his cuff.

"Now, I know we just met in not the best set of circumstances, my bad. But I need you to find us a clean escape route!" I tell the kid while taking his cuffs off. He rubs his wrists before getting off the pavement.

"Finding a route will be hard on surface. The military will lock and sweep this district to the very cracks on the sidewalk" The kid says while pacing back and forth.

These super intelligent guys are something else. Being able to solve the toughest of problems in just minutes, hopefully the info on this kid is true.

"If we're planning for an escape route without issue from the military, the underground sewers will be our best bet. Easy to access and easy enough to get around places." The kid finished his pacing and looked down.

"Like this, these metal covers lead straight underground!" He steps off and tries to pull off the cover. "Heh, you're definitely quick. I'll give you that compared to the other intelligent types" I say before giving the kid a hand with the cover.

Popping the cover off, the light reveals a set of metal bars acting as ladders that leads down. Looking at each other briefly, the kid enters the hole and starts making his way down.

"Hey, Kid! You sure this will work?!" Before I could get his answer, the sound of heavy vehicle engines were close and coming fast. Having no choice, I jump onto the ladders and pull the cover over the hole before I could have been seen.

"Watch your step mister. It's quite dark down here." I hear the kid say from the bottom of the ladders. Jumping off from the last steps, I land next to the kid and take out a lighter. That was before the kid grabbed it from me.

"I wouldn't advise that, the military must know some travel underneath the city. I suspect something was planned for that, may it be from physical assault like heat sensory guns or...worse case scenario, combustible gas."

He returns the lighter to my open hand, leaving me somewhat taken back from the possible dangers he just theorized. "Combustible gas? Isn't that a stretch? That'll be like bombing the whole city!"

He turns to me or at least I can assume from the sound of his footsteps stopping. "While the theory is quite a farfetch thing, we shouldn't rule it out. The military has been getting more and more desperate, I can only assume the resistance is responsible for that."

"You're right about that. We've been pushing back those checkpoints for the past month."

"Part of the resistance? Then again, you wouldn't have been doing all of this for some poor kid like me. I'm sure you have motive that regards me." It's like this kid is reading my mind...he's quick to catch on.

"That's right. The resistance sent me to retrieve you from the checkpoint with the Intel we gathered."

He sighs before speaking "And I'm guessing this resistance wants me for the unique ability I have. Don't you guys have other intelligent types? How am I important?"

"From the Intel we have, you aren't just any normal intelligent type. You're a cut above the rest, I can tell from the small time we've been together. You're about three times faster than any known intelligent type we have back at base."

"Is that so? Guess that'll make me very valuable. Maybe even a Code Black user to be right." He chuckles at the joke he made.

"That's for the military to decide. At best, I'll say Code Orange." I give a slight chuckle back. In perfect timing, my eyes have adjusted to the darkness and see the disbelief on the kid's face.

"A Code Orange?! That's so boring! I say Code Red at best!" He flails around before I step around him to continue through the sewer.

"Say, kid, if the first part of your theory is right, what's the chances of heat sensory weapons being down here?" I ask him while turning my head around the corner from the wall.

"It was only a theory, along with the gas, we shouldn't worry but just in case..." He puts his hand out to me. Catching on, I hand him the lighter from my pocket.

He pops the lid open and lights it. He tosses the lighter further in, so far, not a single gunshot. "Now, this may conclude we're safe. If it pleases you more, no combustible gas!"

I roll my eyes before stepping out from the corner. I pick my lighter up before making it down further in the sewer...

"So, uh, what's your name kid?" Breaking the ice was harder than it looks. "Man, you suck at making small talk." I sigh in response to him. "Look, I'm just trying to at least make things more...or less awkward rather." I say before walking ahead further. "...The name's Jack, at least the name I was...given." His tone dropped at the end, didn't take a genius to know why.

"Jack...I don't usually say this but thanks. Saved us from the military backup." I slowed my pace to match his and gave him a pat on his back. While the heartfelt moment was off putting, it was at least respectable to acknowledge that. "It was nothing...it was either us or them I say" His normal cherry tone came back to him and I couldn't help but smile a little.

It was some time until we found another lid above us. Making our way out the sewers, we look around at the surroundings and lucky for us, I knew where we are. "Camp isn't far now, just need to head for that building there." Pointing towards a small apartment complex, he nods to me. "Can't wait to kick my feet up and drink a six pack..." I mutter as we made our way to the complex. "Ah, right. Before we go in, they'll probably frisk you down and whatever security does." I wave my hand around carelessly. "Just stay close to me and things will go smoothly, got it?" He gives me another nod before taking out a small pocket knife. "Guessing this will be a red flag?" I laugh slightly before taking the small knife. "Could barely be used to open bottles." I take the knife off his hands and tossed it away. "Won't be needing that anymore, you're one of us now. It doesn't mean much but welcome to the Runner life."
