Chapter 3 - Chapter Three: Dad

It was such a bummer I would be in the same group as a super hot mean guy, a black girl who never smiled, Ludie the quiet boy and Nate, a weird guy like me but more outspoken. I walked to the parking lot and looked for my brother's car. I found Andre who waved at me from his car but then I saw she was with him: Jenna, Andre's obsessive girlfriend who was totally in love with him. I rolled my eyes on seeing her. Jenna was so fake, I could tell. She was an Indian beautiful girl with long hair but I really did not like her. Jenna was overly dramatic especially with Andre. Seeing her meant I would sit at the back and watch her praise Andre's driving and give him eye messages. I walked up to them.

'Jenna, hi.' I said smiling widely.

'Wow you look absolutely lovely Anna.' Jenna said looking at Andre as she spoke to me. What did girls see in my brother? Yes, he was six feet one with fascinating blue eyes and broad brown body but he— I have nothing. My brother is hot; very hot.

Jenna went to the front seat straight away without even asking if I wanted to sit with my brother.

'Anna I'm not gonna ask you how school was so hi.' Andre said laughing. Yes, don't ask about school when I have something to actually say about school.

'Are you having a hard time in school Anna?' Jenna asked running her fingers through my brother's hair.

'No.' I said trying to be blunt.

'You can tell Jenna. She's my second after all.' Andre said and like always she was going to kiss Andre but would not stop. Not while his driving, she won't.

'Jenna, Andre's driving. You're gonna distract him.' I said cautiously.

'Her face is enough distraction.' Andre said making Jenna blush. I wanted to puke, obviously this was going to be the worst car "love conversation" ever.

**********

Thank goodness we dropped Jenna before we got home. I would have it if she came home with. The house smelt nice and full of new things. This only meant one thing.

'Sup flash mind.'

'Dad!' I shouted jumping on to my father giving him a hug.

'My flash mind. How have you been killing chemistry in your new school?' Dad asked.

'Chemistry's been behaving.' I said laughing. I felt at peace with dad. He had his hands on my shoulders and examined my face. I wanted to weep and tell him all wasn't well with my new school.

Andre sighed in disappointment on seeing dad. Even though dad knew he never got along with Andre, he still always acted like his father.

'How are you doing son.' Dad asked Andre who was already heading up the stairs.

'How do you think an illegitimate child is doing.' Andre replied quite proud of his statement. Dad's adam's apple went up then down. He looked away from Andre and back to mom. 'I missed you so much Theresa.' He said to my mother. Mom gave him a smile as he pressed his lips unto hers. There were tears in my mother's eyes. Tears she wished were not there. I always wondered who my father loved best, my mother; his mistress, or his wife; his wife. My parents always told me how they fell in love but Dad's parents did not want him to get married to a black woman, but it was too late since mom had already gotten pregnant with Andre and dad could not get married to her. Her parents sent her out on the street. Mom decided it was better to be his mistress and feed her child than loose him to the poverty of the street. I think that is why Andre hates father so much; because it all looked like it was his (Andre's) fault.

***********

I woke up happily because my father was around. I loved watching him be my dad. Dad was on the table already and he and Mom were talking and laughing like a couple, at least dad was.

'Good morning Dad.' I said.

'Morning flash mind.'

'Come on dad, that name is super lame.'

'If I remember, you aree the nerd here.' Dad said. I sat down to have breakfast. Andre came downstairs. He rolled his eyes on seeing dad.

'Man you're still here?' Andre muttered.

'It's the weekend. No attitude or I won't stay.' Dad said looking at me.

'A warning or a wish about to be granted?' Andre said with obvious sarcasm.

'I'm all yours this weekend.'

'No! I just remembered my group is having a meeting at Caldwell's house.'

'Who's Caldwell?' Mom asked alarmed by a boy's name on my lips. Everyone had their eyes on me.

'I did not tell you guys. I'm in a mystery club so I'm going over to Caldwell's for our meeting as a group.'

'Is he cute?' Mom asked. None of them had paid so much attention in this manner. It was strange.

'Yes.' I said without thinking.

'How cute? Andre cute?' Mom asked with a giggle.

'What do you mean by Andre cute?' The conversation was getting awkward and the looks in their faces made me embarrassed. I stopped eating and went upstairs. I felt my cheeks rising as I heard my family laugh, even Andre. What ever they were thinking, I strangely liked it.
