Chapter 3 - The Beginning

"You just have to make best use of every worst situation you find your self in"

~ πŸ™„ ~

Ijeoma was very tired after a long and stressful day at work, she works as an accountant in a large firm. Her husband, Ola, has travelled on a business trip to meet his clients who were interested in some of the properties he was selling. Her husband was into landed properties.

Their house was always boring whenever her husband went on business trips like that and there was always no one to keep her company except Ruka, the housemaid and her best friend, Laraba.

Immediately she reached home, she honked the car and the gateman opened the gate for her while she quickly drove in.

Ruka rushed outside and quickly helped her Madam, Ijeoma, with her bag.

Immediately Ijeoma entered, she asked Ruka what is at home for dinner.

"Madam, I prepared Eba with okra soup(An African dish)" Ruka replied.

"Ok,in 30 minutes time, set the food on the table and have you eaten yet?" Ijeoma asked.

" Yes Madam, I have eaten" Ruka replied.

"Ok, you can return to your quarters and good night to you" Ijeoma said as she made way into her bedroom.

Immediately she reached her bedroom, she took off her clothes and she clutched her belly as started feeling small pain in her lower abdomen. Her monthly visitor was around.

The monthly visitor came late after 1 week from the original period. Ijeoma was very happy hoping that she was pregnant but what a wishful thinking, she wasn't pregnant.

She was already tired of the situation, she had been married to Ola for 5 years and time was already going. Her husband was supportive but her husband's people especially Mama would not allow her to have a breathing space whenever she comes to visit her son in the city.

She had been to several places, Gynaecologists, Pastors, Alfas and she had prayed and done all what they told her to do but all to no avail.

Her best friend, Laraba is a secondary school teacher in a private school and she is married to the love of her life, Smith who is an Engineer and she is blessed with 3 wonderful children. Laraba was also supportive of Ijeoma because they took each other like blood sisters.

They had been friends since secondary school and they both went to the same University and since then, they had been inseparable.

She also met her husband,Ola, when she was in University, they married two years after their graduation despite all odds because Mama,Ola's mother, didn't want them to marry because she came from Igbo tribe and Mama believed she was an osu (Trans - possessed child) .

Ola and Ijeoma didn't allow that to deter them, they got married to each other despite Mama wahala (Trans - trouble).

Ijeoma parents were supportive of the marriage, they had no problem with the couples as long as they both love each other and were happy with each other.

The wedding took place in Ijeoma's church and they were both married in Holy matrimony.

They went for their honeymoon in Dubai, they spent two weeks there before returning to Nigeria.

Ola and Ijeoma agreed not have children during the first 2 years of their marriage so that they can both focus on their careers but during the third year, they can start giving birth.

Alas!,this was the third year, they had both been trying but nothing productive had come out of it.

She was very tired because whenever Mama comes to the City, she always taunt her,she remembered one of Mama visit and what she said to her.

Flashback of Mama's Visit

Ijeoma was at home on Saturday afternoon when Mama came.

"Mama, Good afternoon ma,how is everyone in the village doing?" She greeted kneeling down like a Yoruba woman

"Everyone is fine oo and where is my son?" Mama asked rolling her eyes as she looked round the house.

"He is still in the office,he comes home late these days because he's quite busy at work" Ijeoma replied not minding Mama's wierd reaction.

"Okay, Why is the house so quiet like this?" Mama asked.

"Mama, the house is always quiet like this, it's only our housemaid that is living with us" Ijeoma replied oblivious to Mama's sneer.

"I said it now, you are a very foolish girl, oponu ni e (Trans - you are a fool), the house is quiet because there are no children playing around and shouting Grandma, when my son brought your two idiotic legs to the village saying he wanted to marry you, I knew you were going to be unproductive, akosibero ( Trans - ill luck bringer), agan (Trans - barren), empty drum, I am very sure you have aborted all the possible children in your womb" Mama retorted yelling and shouting while Ijeoma was just looking at Mama like a dummy because she didn't really understand Mama's language which was Yoruba.

"Mama, I am very sorry ,if I have offended you in anyway, kindly forgive me ma but we are really trying our best but God's time is the best" Ijeoma replied trying to calm Mama down.

"I knew it and I said it, your mother didn't train you well ,if not,you wouldn't be replying me" Mama said.

"Mama, please don't call my mother into this discussion" Ijeoma replied calmly.

"What will you do to me, you will beat me abi? Oya (Trans - C'mon ),come and fight me" Mama replied .

Ijeoma quickly left the place in order for her to cool her head and waited for her husband to come back before appearing to Mama again.

During the rest of Mama's stay, she made sure she avoided Mama.

Flashback over

Ijeoma entered the bathroom, did her business and went to eat her dinner.

She called her husband after eating the dinner and they spoke for a hour informing each other their day activities since it was their daily routine.

Immediately, she slept off with the thought of "Tomorrow will be better".
