Chapter 4 - Chapter 4

My peaceful sleep doesn't last long. I can feel my room shaking and I wake to loud booming sounds. Each boom causes crumbs of concrete, brick, and stone to sprinkle onto my bed. I quickly scramble out of bed and swing my door open, everyone is gathering in the mess hall with confused or scared looks on their faces. "What's going on?" I hear a girl ask the old man I've become friends with. Her head is shaved and she looks about my age, her eyes are huge and her lips are full, with specks of dark freckles spilling onto her nose, I guess I'm not the only kid here. "I'm not sure, I think capital goons may have found us." My eyes widen at his words "the devoted?" I ask, he simply nods, taking a hit from a cigarette. "It's not a good idea to gather like this." I say "we're just being herded." The girl nods, agreeing with me. "We need to go back to our rooms, or evacuate." the building shakes again, causing some to gasp aloud. "Who's in charge around here?!" The girl asks angrily, we both look up at the old man and he sighs "no one. That woman who gave the speech earlier is the closest thing to a leader we have." I growl under my breath and begin power walking through the hallways where the rooms are, looking for her. "Do you think she jumped ship?" The girl asks me, I shrug as I swing open each bedroom door. My eyes ticking around every inch of the rooms. "How long have you been in the hole?" She asks me, I shake my head "not long." wishing she would stop talking to me so I can concentrate. I'm thinking now that maybe a wall fell and trapped her somehow, the building is shaking pretty badly and the structure of this place doesn't look too solid. "Do you know her name? The woman?" I ask the girl, she nods "Rebecca." I start calling her name out as we walk down the hallway of rooms. "I'm here!" her voice sounds faint but close, like something is crushing her—I was right. I race down the hall and swing a door open and sure enough I find a large room, Rebecca's dresser is on the ground, her foot trapped under it. The girl and I run to her aid. "You get the other side." I say, she nods and does as I say. We lift and it doesn't budge, I was not prepared for how heavy her dresser is. It's tall, like a wardrobe, the drawers are sticking out, her clothes spilling out of them. "Go get Pat." She groans out. "Who's Pat?" I ask. But before she can answer the girl is already bolting out of the room. I do my best to remove the drawers from the dresser to make it lighter. "That feels better." Rebecca groans out, I nod as the girl comes back with the old man—my friend, who I now know as Pat. He gets on the girl's side to help her because he knows I'm stronger. With a count of three we lift the dresser just enough for Rebecca to slide her foot out from underneath it. I slink her arm over my shoulders and we leave the room, to the mess hall. "What's your name?" Rebecca asks me, she's breathing heavily and I do my best to steady her as we walk. "Marlene." I say. I have always hated my name, it didn't suit me and even my brother agreed with me on that. I didn't look like a Marlene, didn't act like a Marlene. "Thank you, Marlene." She says with a grateful smile as I release her a bit. "Everyone! The capital has sent their Devoted! We have to evacuate immediately!" If we don't leave soon, they'll either kill us or capture us. The capital wants everyone to be Devoted, to live for them, to serve them.
