"We don't have French toast here, but don't worry, I make the best French toast!" Said Jo in excitement.
"We just need to go and buy the ingredients!" Lu Ye Ze looked at the girl in surprise. She was genuinely smiling. The smile that he had longed for, was given to him in such modest circumstances. This atmosphere made him feel fuzzy and warm on the inside, it was a pleasant feeling. Soon reality hit him, It was just an illusion though, a small particle of a whole, that it will never belong to him.
Jo went back to the bedroom, she washed up and got ready to go out.
The streets of Paris were very busy this time of year, people were hustling and bustling, trying to get ready for the festive season. In the air the smell of smoke from burnt wood, was coming out from the tall chimneys. Christmas carols could be heard at every street corner and the smell of freshly baked pastries from the bakeries was very inviting.
A couple was walking side by side on the busy sidewalk. People kept separating them in their rush, and the girl seemed to struggle to catch up with the man's fast pace. Suddenly a little soft warmth invaded the man's wide and cold palm. He looked down at his hand and saw an array of small fingers poking out from his grip.
Jo was tired in trying to keep up with him, so she grabbed his hand. This way people will not separate them anymore and she was able to match his pace. She didn't thought much about it. In Europe it was quite common to hold someone's hand, but for Lu Ye Ze, it was a milestone that seemed very hard to achieve.
Due to the cold wind his face was rosy, so his blushing cheeks couldn't be seen. He looked at her and smiled, trying to contain all this happiness that flooded him instantly.
She looked up at him and their eyes met. His smile felt like an electric shock. Jo's stomach started filling with butterflies and she could feel her ears getting hot. For some reason holding his hand felt different, so she quickly let go and said.
"Let's try this shop!"
Lu Ye Ze was shocked, a cracking sound could be heard inside his chest. He could still feel the shape and warmth of her hand, that was now gone, in his palm. He furrowed his brows, indeed it was just an illusion, so he regained his composure and followed the girl inside.
Jo found all her ingredients and went to the counter. Lu Ye Ze paid and the couple went back to the apartment.
In the kitchen, Jo took the bag from Lu Ye Ze and started getting the ingredients out. She put on an apron she found hanged on the door and then washed her hands. Lu Ye Ze helped her take out the utensils she need.
"How can I help you?" He asked.
"By sitting there and wait for me to finish!" Jo pointed to a chair in the distant living room.
Lu Ye Ze looked at the girl and smiled. Then he pulled a stool from under the kitchen counter and sat down.
Jo was rendered speechless. She had just gotten herself an audience.
