Ryder
"How do you think this year is gonna be?" I heard Cody say beside me and I rolled my eyes, slightly irritated by the disturb of the silence I had going on.
"Boring as usual. Not unless the girls grew hotter, after all this time," said Ethan and I frowned.
"Shut up," I said irritated and clenching my jaw shut almost as tightly as my eyes were, and instantly I could feel their gazes on me.
"Who pissed in your cereal this morning?" One of them asked as I pushed off the wall starting towards the entrance.
"Let's just get this over and done with."
"You know we are going to be here till the end of the year, right?" I heard Ethan ask followed by a loud smack, I'm sure Cody gladly gave him a good whack at the back of the head. Sometimes I wondered how we even became friends. He wasn't that bad of course but more than normal he just didn't know when to shut up. He was blunt but it made him a good friend.
"What? It's true."
"He's in a bad mood."
"Isn't he always?"
I swear these didn't know how to whisper even they were handed a manual. Not that it bothered me since I knew it was meant for my hearing, but still.
*******
"You may leave now. Not you Ryder," he called and I rolled my eyes, plopping back down on the seat as Cody and Ethan left the room.
"What now?"
"Don't give me that attitude or it counts as a strike. Three strikes and you're out Ryder. You know your situation and you know why you're still here. And besides more than anything I'm doing you a favor," he said and I rolled my eyes standing up.
"I think we are done here," I said walking out a little surprised that he even let me.
"You good?" Cody asked as I found them waiting for me at the front desk.
"Yeah, let's just hurry and get to class," I said and he stopped suddenly turning back the way I came making me roll my eyes.
"Principal Scott, what the hell..." He started and I was quick to cover his mouth as I pulled him out of the office area ignoring the nasty glare from some staff in the room.
"Shut up idiot," I snapped giving him one of my own and he grinned sheepishly.
"Oh stop you love me," he said shrugging me off playfully and I looked at him strangely.
"You've been spending way too much time with Ethan."
"I'm right here you know," Ethan said feigning being offended and I rolled my eyes again. I swear these two would make me lose my hair way too early, at least before my time.
"Whatever. Let's just get out of here before it gets crowded."
"Too late," Ethan said just as the bell rang and I groaned. Great just great.
Then started the murmurs, the chatter, whether excited or not, I didn't care. It didn't use to bother me before. Now I much preferred to be far away from humankind and it had nothing to do with self-esteem. I was a cocky bastard and I knew it. I just wished this day would end soon.
"I swear if eyes were bullets, many people would be lying dead in this hallway," Cody teased.
"Haha, very funny," I said sarcastically and he laughed as we got to our lockers.
"You can't still be worried about what happened."
"Unconcerned is more like it. I don't remember people not being busy when we were here," I said and he rolled his eyes at me.
"Don't be so dark."
"Yeah. You know maybe you should get laid some time."
"I swear Ethan one day I'll shut you up permanently."
"But not soon, right?"
"Cody?"
"Ethan, just give him a break it's the first day back."
"Okay, but just saying a girlfriend isn't that bad. Just don't get one like the last."
"Says the world's biggest player."
"Oh well, I tried," he said with a shrug and I stared at him weirdly. This guy was too chill for life but then again he was the sanest person I knew from Cody, despite all the crazy ideas he managed to come up with. "What? I already know I'm dreamy. Falling in love with me already?"
He asked pushing away his long hair which was mostly non-existent.
"More like wondering how I haven't beaten you to a pulp yet," I said and he laughed.
"Well, I love you too." See crazy but he was a good friend I'll give him that.
"All I want is peaceful quiet senior year and hopefully uneventful."
"You? You can dream for sure," Cody said patting my shoulder.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"You are trouble. And trouble follows you everywhere," Ethan said and I was confused.
"Care to elaborate that."
"Tell you what. I'm giving you a week. No detentions, no skipping class, no late slips or anything of the sort," Cody said closing his locker and turning to me. "Which I mostly doubt you'll make. The thing is even when you're not trying, you'll always end up in trouble."
"Nah, I give him before the end of the school day. There is no way he can last that long."
"Your confidence in me is flattering," I muttered under my breath and he chuckled.
"Just stating the truth."
"Yeah, right. You two are idiots."
"Aww, are you chicken, Blaiky?" Ethan said and I rolled my eyes as he started making chicken sounds trying to ignore that he'd called me by my childhood nickname.
"Don't call me that," I scoffed. "And for the record I can stay out of trouble for one day."
"Sure," Cody said clapping my back as they started away from me.
And yet, I've never felt more insulted. But then again, I'd have to realize that these so-called friends knew me better than I liked.
