Chapter 24 - Chapter Twenty Four

Wavy streams of light swirled around Kai's body as he focused. The mana within his body pulsed, resonating with the stray mana that was present around him. After several more minutes of meditating, he suddenly opened his eyes, exposing the deep gold colors swirling within. Slowly, the gold faded, reverting to their usual blue color.

After six months of constant training, Kai had progressed smoothly through the Earth class and was now sitting firmly at the Late Stage of the Earth class. After several tweaks to the information the Divine Mage System provided about his status, he had finally managed to get it in a format which he could understand. Unlike Kasuyi, he wasn't a born genius.

He stood up from his perch on the tree branch, stretching his back as he did so. He vastly preferred to train his Magic Core when he was surrounded by nature. Perhaps it was his innate affinity for elemental magic that shaped the way his body perceived the lingering mana in the atmosphere.

Kai leaped down from the tall tree he was in. Wind swirled beneath his feet as he lowered himself onto the ground. Although he was still pretty weak, and his control over magic was mediocre at best, he had managed to grasp the control of one element - wind.

"Kai." Reinhard greeted from the base of the tree. He had gotten there a while back when Kai was still in the middle of his practice session.

"Hey bud." Kai waved, flashing his friend a grin. During the past months, in order to cope with his intense training, Reinhard had opted to develop his body, choosing strength over agility. Right now, he towered over Kai, almost two heads taller than the smaller boy.

"You done?" Reinhard asked as he turned to walk away from the tree, not expecting an answer from Kai. Kai follows him behind closely, his hands crossed behind his head as they set a leisurely pace through the garden of the training camp.

They took their time walking through the camp, taking in the various scenes, from the peaceful gardens, to the boisterous mess hall, down to the stables, and even the training field. No matter which part of the camp they went to, people were always present.

"Let's head to the dorms. We should be able to find some peace and quiet to talk there." Kai suggested.

"Mm..." Both boys adjusted their course and set off to the residential area of the camp. Different from the varying sights of the camp that were inspired by different cultures, the residential area was rather generic, plain in every way. When they reached Kai's room, both were relieved to find it devoid of any other occupants. They would rather keep their discussions between themselves.

"So, what is it you wanted to talk about?" Kai asked, flopping down on his bed. If it was anyone else, he would remain stiff and cordial, but the atmosphere between him and Reinhard was soothing so he felt no need to maintain a stiff attitude when it was just them.

"It's nothing too serious. I just wanted to ask you about which path you were planning on taking." Reinhard shrugged his shoulders. "You know, about what Commander Eren spoke to us of. What path will you choose at the end of the week?" Reinhard's deep brown eyes fixed on Kai.

Sensing the importance of the situation, Kai sat up from the bed, his face adopting a more solemn look. He sighed, "To be honest, I was never planning on joining the Army. You know me, I'm more of a free bird; the Army is too uptight. I would rather be a mercenary after we leave the camp, even with all their rules, they don't come close to the strict attitude of the Army." Kai shrugged, absently scratching at his chin.

"What about you?" He threw the question back at Reinhard.

"Me? I think I'll stick with the Army." Reinhard looked down at his calloused hands. "Ever since when I found out I couldn't be a Mage, I decided I would train hard enough. If for no other reason, then so that you won't leave me too far behind. I don't think I want to eat your dust." He rubbed his neck, grinning sheepishly at Kai.

"Dork." Kai laughed.

"What did you call me?" Reinhard pounced on Kai, pinning his head under his arm and ruffling his head of brown hair.

The two boys laughed merrily, taking advantage of what little time they had left to spend with each other before parting ways.

.....

Within an inconspicuous looking shop.

"I see you've kept the place well, Bethany." A robed figure spoke as he stepped out from a hidden stairwell in the basement of the shop.

"Indeed. How else do you expect me to make a living?" The old woman named Bethany chirped happily in return, releasing a joyful cackle. "Phase one has been completed. The Inheritor is in possession of Lord Kasuyi's grimoire." Bethany pushed a lock of silver hair behind her ear. This Bethany was the old shopkeeper that Kai had met several months ago when he first acquired his grimoire.

"Wonderful! We can carry out the next phase then." The robed figure stepped aside, making way for more people to step out of the stairwell. After they were all above ground, the stairwell moved, collapsing in on itself as it vanished without trace.

Bethany turned around, leading the group of robed people into the building.

"Come, come. You all need to settled down before the Inheritor is ready."
