Chapter 7 - Dreams

Janet sent me outside to get the paper in the morning, and I even went without complaining, probably because I was so busy thinking about the strange dreams I had last night. Maybe it was the dose of crazy I'd gotten from the Aryan club after school yesterday. I'd seen someone else in my dreams, someone fast and fierce. Someone in a battle who cut people down with a shining sword, and swept thro in gh the motions of fighting with an easy grace that spoke of long practice. I told myself I wasn't allowed to watch Mike play his video games before bed anymore. He liked to play those stupid fighting, roll playing games and it had obviously gotten inside my head.

I pulled my robe tightly closed before I opened the door, but the blast of cold air I was expecting never came. I walked out into the cement step and surveyed the free front yard. Yup, still snow everywhere. Maybe I was just getting used to it. Hunkering down, J grabbed the plastic encased paper. My hands were bare, and my fingers curled around the ice encrusted surface. Nothing. No shock of cold. I bbn linked down at my hand. Why couldn't I feel the cold? Did that mean I was having a stroke or something? Were my nerves dead?

"Demitry!" Janet yelled. "Close the damn door! We're not hearing the outside!"

I stepped back inside, clutching the paper to my chest. The door clicked shut behind me and In walked into the kitchen and slammed the paper down into the counter.

Janet turned to look at me from the stove where she was making scrambled eggs for Ashley, who was already drooling and throwing bits of ham around in her high chair.

"You're tracking snow in, Demitry." Janet glared at me. "Go dry your feet. Are you nyts going out there without shoes?"

I looked down. There were wet little slugs of ice trail iij ng from the front door to the kitchen. I hadn't stepped in the snow though. Maybe the doormat had snow on it? Try when why weren't my feet cold right now?

"Don't just stand there gawking like an idiot," Janet said. "Hey get a towel."

I turned and grabbed the dish towel from the counter and threw it down on the floor, ignoring her shrieks of indignation.

"I didn't mean that towel! That's for the dishes!"

"You told me to get a damn towel," I growled back at her. "I fucking got one!"

Janet turned and hollered down the hall. "Mike! Come take her to school!"

"School doesn't start for another half hour." I grumbled, turning to walk into the living room. "Nice try getting rid of me though."

Mike was in the living room, sitting on the couch watching the morning news. He looked up at me guilitily, a piece of toast in one hand.

"Hey, kiddo. She giving you a hard time in there?"

I flipped down beside him, wishing that for once he would grow a pair and tell Janet off. "Yeah. What's new?"

"All ready for your second day of school?"

"Ready as I'll ever be."

Mike handed me his other piece of toast and I chopped down on it gratefully. There was no way I was going back into the kitchen to try and get breakfast.

"Did you make any friends yet?" He asked anxiously.

Boy, his conscience was obviously killing him.

"Yeah, actually." I gulped down on the toast, the peanut butter sticking on the way down. "I did. There are some really nice girls there." Maybe.

"Well that's good." He looked relieved. "I guess we should probably get you there. Go get dressed and I'll watm the car up." He stood up and shuffled into the hallway. I could hear him starting the car outside. I sighed and went upstairs to get dressed. I put on a wine red crop tank top, black skinny Jean's, a black leather jacket and black combat boots. I curled my hair tossed on some eyeliner and mascara and went out to the car.

Maddie cornered me as soon as I walked ed d into the hallway. "Weird dreams?"

I looked at her, startled. "What did you say?"

"I had weird dreams last night, did you?"

She must have known then, from the look I was giving her.

"You had them too! Did you dream about a war?"

"I..." What could I say? Lie about it?

She whirled on the rest of her little group as they struggled down the hallway to join us.

"Girls, did any of you have any weird dreams?"

Becky shrugged and Stacey shook her head, but Anna and Lilly both looked astonished. "About fighting?" Lilly cried.

"What the hell," I leaned against the closest locker, feeling out of breath. "What the hell is going on?"

Charlie darted out of the classroom at the end of the hallway, and grabbed my arm, "Come on, class is starting. Sit by me."

I allowed her to lead me away, feeling sort of dazed. I could feel Maddie's eyes on my back as I went.
