Chapter 15 - HER TWIN

Maybe this person would be a bit easier to guess. She is Cassiopeia's sister, her younger sister, to be precise. Her name is Kaliope.

Cassiopeia called Kaliope her twin because they have similar appearances but different personalities; Kaliope is nine years younger than Cassiopeia. She remembers clearly the first time that she saw Kaliope.

Time for an anecdote: Kaliope, first glance, younger sister, the same experience but a different feeling.

As we know, Cassiopeia is the oldest grandchildren, so she is accustomed, since she was a child, to see babies but, that moment was different. When she was a child, Cassiopeia didn't understand too much about childbirth, so she didn't know that her mom couldn't pick her up from school that day with her younger sister because she needed to rest.

When she finished her classes, her uncle went to pick her up. After a few minutes, when they arrived home, her uncle told Cassiopeia that there was a surprise in her bedroom. Cassiopeia thought that the surprise could be a toy or something like that but, when she entered her bedroom, she saw her mom and a baby dressed all in yellow, the baby was her younger sister. For Cassiopeia, everything was sudden; like many times, she felt amazed when she saw Kaliope but, Cassiopeia also felt overwhelming love that she hadn't felt before.

Currently, Cassiopeia feels that overwhelming love not only when she remembers that moment but also when she looks at her little sister because that feeling's going to be overwhelming forever and ever.

When you see Cassiopeia and Kaliope is easy to notice that they are sisters, but when you know them better, you also notice their different personalities: Cassiopeia is quiet, intelligent, introverted, sarcastic, humble, and a bit insecure. On the other hand, Kaliope is talkative, extroverted, clever, and a little spoiled. That is because they experiment with a bit different parenting ways in some aspects.

"My mom and my dad had to work hard, and sometimes I didn't see them regularly but, I didn't see my dad more than my mom.

My dad had some alcohol problems; he got a bit aggressive when he drank too much that scared me a lot. Also, there were money problems; that wasn't an extreme situation, but it was a bad one, so I was more aware of the importance of money and its moderate spending than the other children of my age. I tried not to ask for many things, only the necessary ones and those with a lower price; also, I tried to be more independent and calm as not to disturb and worry my parents. I liked to sit and listen to the adults talk. In my house, there was no other child, so I played alone or watched television.

When I was a child, I had many health problems like anemia so, my visits to the hospital were recurrent, and my mom's knowledge about some medications was increasing." Those are some aspects of Cassiopeia's childhood. Her childhood wasn't so bad, but it was a bit difficult, that plus her environment made her mature a little faster.

"I was born into a middle-class family; however, I had many toys, and we went out to eat many times a month. My dad is the one who spoils me the most; my dad and my mom have their businesses. I am one of the youngest family members, so I don't have many responsibilities, and I can play for many hours with my cousins. When there are family meetings, I like to go to my cousins' rooms to play with their toys. I love to play hide and seek and with my dolls. I feel bored when I sit without doing something; I prefer to talk about something interesting like a cartoon or movie that I have seen." Now, those are some aspects of Kaliope's life. The most evident difference between Cassiopeia and Kaliope's life is the economic situation that they lived in and their parents' presence.

"Sometimes I felt sad and jealous because I wanted a similar childhood with fewer problems or maybe less awareness of the difficulties around me, but at the same time, I am grateful to realize it so as not to add more to the problems.

In the beginning, all was a bit difficult because taking care of a younger sister is different than a cousin because you spend more time taking care of a younger sister. In my case, there were a few more protection wishes with Kaliope than with my cousins."

Time for another anecdote: Cassiopeia, Kaliope, parents, alcohol, "I'm going to protect you."

This situation happened when Cassiopeia was nine years old, two or three months after Kaliope's birth.

One night, Henry, Cassiopeia, and Kaliope's dad came home drunk, so drunk. He started to argue with Joanna, Cassiopeia, and Kaliope's mom about different things that Cassiopeia didn't remember; Henry looked angry. Cassiopeia and Kaliope were in their parents' bedroom with no possibility to leave because they were on the bed. Suddenly, Henry pounced on Joanna to choke her against the bed; Cassiopeia was scared and crying but, her mom, instead of comforting Cassiopeia, told Cassiopeia to shut up. After a few minutes, Joanna managed to throw Henry to the side of the bed, but on that side of the bed was Kaliope, who had her dad's weight on her for a moment; when Cassiopeia saw that, she carried Kaliope and ran to her uncle's bedroom as fast as she could. She entered her uncle's room and explained to him what happened, and asked him for help; after that, her uncle went to Cassiopeia's parents' room while Cassiopeia was still carrying Kaliope, she was thinking a million things and then she realized: "Kaliope will have to live a childhood like mine but, I don't want that for her, I don't want her to live what I lived, I have to protect her so that she has a better childhood." Cassiopeia was young but, she understood that her childhood wasn't good; maybe some aspects were good but, others weren't.

Although there were some problems that she could not minimize or fix, she was able to avoid them; for example, when her father came back drunk, she locked herself in her room with Kaliope. At first, Kaliope didn't understand it, but she went with the flow; sometime later, Kaliope started to complain, but later, when she understood what her sister was doing, she kept going with the flow. Despite all this, many people have told Cassiopeia that she treats her younger sister as if Cassiopeia were her sister's stepmother because Cassiopeia can be a bit cold and strict at times, but if that were true, then why would Cassiopeia protect her?; if she didn't love Kaliope, Cassiopeia wouldn't do anything for Kaliope.

What do you think? Is Cassiopeia a good or bad person? Did she fail as a sister? Do you have a similar or different thought to her thought?
