"Just leave your contact details and we'll call you back"
There was a miniscule of a pause before I quickly put on my fakest smile for the lady in front of me. She was smiling back at me but hers came out as a sympathetic smile and I knew very well why.
A sudden crash from the back kitchen startled the both of us followed by giggles of children. The lady in front of me sighed deeply and her face was then replaced with an emotion that indicates nothing but fatigue.
"I'm sorry but I have to go check on my kids. Please come back soon to try our pastries", with one last tired smile, she literally sprinted to the back kitchen through the door.
I just stood there looking ahead of me where the lady stood before she ran out. The only thing that was on my mind was about her saying she would call me back. I knew without a doubt that I wouldn't hear from her after this despite the tiny glimpse of hope those words gave me. I slowly turned around to head out from the bakery I was currently in. I could faintly hear the voice of the lady who was having a hard time controlling her kids.
As soon as I stepped out of the place, I had to shield my eyes from the blazing sun. The sudden change of scenery made me see all black for a second. My mind then drifted away to what had happened for the past couple of ours. I went from coffee shops to bakeries just to hear the same thing from the owners. I have heard over six sentences that implicated the same meaning which was making me go mad.
"We'll be sure to get back to you"
"We will be reaching out to you when we need an extra hand"
"Be sure to expect a call from us and before you head out why not have a cookie from the counter. It's on the house!'"
You can guess what the rest of it implied. At least I got to fill my tummy with one cookie from Terry's Bakery. Unfortunately one cookie wasn't enough because I heard my stomach growl as soon as I came out from the coffee shop I was in. I looked around and found a pizza parlor within my sight. Without a second to waste, I started walking there and as soon as I entered the parlor, my stomach went havoc at the smell of pizza. I hurriedly ordered my favorite and took a seat at the far corner of the parlor.
"Call me back. Yeah right. I sure will be waiting," I muttered and scoffed at the thought and proceeded to take a huge bite of my pizza slice. I mentally rolled my eyes for even wasting my time around this part of the town. I have never seen even one "employees for hire" sign around here but I thought it wouldn't hurt to try. Well, I definitely thought wrong because my feet were killing me at the moment. I guess they didn't need any help considering there weren't even many people around here. They wouldn't want to pay an employee whose job is to just sit around more than tending customers.
I looked around me to find only two other people in this pizza parlor. It's currently the summer so people were probably surfing in Hawaii or taking pictures in front of the Eiffel Tower. During the last days of my senior year in high school which was a few weeks ago, I have heard various vacation plans from the people around me. It was all really well planned and I was envious of those type of luxuries in their lives.
My summer vacation is going to be used up for a job. If, by luck, I ever get one. My situation at home isn't really the best at the moment so I had to get on my feet to help. Hence there's me finding a job today. My dad was against it as he said and I quote "You have to use your summer vacation with your friends not cleaning tables". I have friends, good friends but I don't feel like mingling around at the moment. I would rather be saying "Hello, what would you like to eat today" for half of the day than constantly being in awe of others' lives.
After satisfying my angry stomach, I left the parlor and decided to just head back home before it gets really dark. Putting my hood up, I started walking back home even though my legs were asking for rest. My dad would have had prepared dinner right now and is probably waiting for me. I would have to hide the fact that I just ate enough pizza to make me burp as loud as a giant would. I'm sure there's more room in my stomach for dinner which I presume would be pasta.
It wasn't even a minute later when I heard a bell chime. I turned around to look where it came from. At the far corner of the of the shop lots, there was a pink store which looked like a coffee shop. I saw a man, in all back, heading in to the store. His whole figure was a contrast to the bright pink store he was going in.
What got me curious was how I could have missed that store. It's in the dark corner of the shop lot but it stood out like a sore thumb because of its really bright pink paint.
I stood there for a moment, contemplating if I should give that café a shot. With a heavy sigh, I turned around and headed straight to that store despite my aching legs.
The shop was indeed a coffee shop and there were a few people in there having their drinks. I strained my neck to look up and saw "Rosalie's Café" written on the sign board. 'Why not give it one last shot for today', I thought. With that, I headed straight to the entrance door.
The doorbell chimed as soon as I pushed it and the scent of coffee wafted in the air. There were chocolate muffins and bread on the counter that looked amazing . My mood instantly went from zero to hundred when I saw mini cheesecakes inside a class cover.
"Hello darling! Welcome! Come on here and see what do you feel like having".
My romantic staring between those mini cheesecakes and myself was soon interrupted by a warm welcoming voice. I looked away from those cheesecakes to see an elderly woman behind the counter. She had a friendly smile on her face that was directed to me. Her smile wasn't the only thing that attracted me but it was her outfit too. It was all pink. From bottom to the top.
I don't mind the color pink at at. In fact, pink was one of my favorite colors but I personally would feel self-conscious for wearing an overall outfit of the color pink simply because it's an attractive color.
I greeted her back with a small hello and went to the counter. Now I'm just a meter away in front of her but my eyes keep drifting away to her outfit, which I shall remind you again, is bright- overall pink. When I looked back at her, she was just smiling waiting for me to talk.
"Do you happen to want an employee at the moment?", I started off.
"Are you asking if we're hiring? I'm sorry to say this but we're not darling", the elderly lady who is Rosalie referring to her name tag, gave me a sad smile in return. 'At least she didn't gave me the infamous "I will call you"' , I thought to myself.
"Oh, okay thanks anyways ma'am". For the first time today I gave her a genuine smile. I was appreciative that she told me that they weren't actually hiring.
With a goodbye, I turned around and started heading to the door. But before I reached it, I bumped into a man by my shoulder. I looked up and saw two men. One of them was a middle aged man while the other one was a boy who looked about to be in my age. The boy was holding the middle aged man who had a sorrowful look in his face by his elbow.
I quickly looked at the middle aged man who I bumped into and muttered a "Sorry sir". As soon as I said that, I heard gasps from behind me. Before I could turn around, the boy suddenly spoke up.
"Who are you talking to?", he asked rather harshly. I looked at him and instantly felt intimidated by his glaring eyes. I was clueless on why he was glaring but shrugged it off thinking that he was born with a glare.
" I was just apologizing to this sir over here for bumping into him".
The boy's glare intensified as soon as I said that. "You mean this man I'm holding?".
"Umm yes. Anyways sorry again." Before I could even take one more step forward, I heard Rosalie shouted a quick "wait".
I turned around to look at her. She was still standing behind the counter as before. Her kind smile from a while ago was replaced with a shocked face. Her eyes were wide and mouth agape. She was looking straight at me. Suddenly, her shock emotion quickly turned into a scrutinizing one. I started to squirm under her stare. I turned my head towards the rude boy, whose glare towards me was still apparent but there was a little curiosity in them as well.
I looked back at the rude boy and studied his face. I couldn't recall seeing him around here considering it's a small town. He had jet black hair and hazel eyes. His prominent cheek bones and 'finger-cutting worthy' jawline made him stand out from all the other boys I have seen. He had a lean body that was covered in an all-black outfit. There was no denying that this boy was attractive. Attractive but rude.
The sound of Rosalie clearing her throat made me look back at her. Now, she had her friendly smile back on her face. The next words came out of the mouth proved that I was indeed lucky upon entering this café.
"You're hired darling".
"What?"
"What!?"
While I uttered the first 'what' out of pure curiosity, the second 'what' was uttered in pure range.
