"I am not such a thing, my lord. I do not have a land nor a title to call myself that." Said Varys as he bowed his head a little as always.
"There is no need to be humble here. The king would not choose any boy from Essos to serve as his master of whispers, right?" Said Edward with a knowing smile. As if Varys humbleness would fool him. The man was as good as Rob in building his little birds. He was able to plant at least some birds in every house except the Baratheon.
Edward had organized the streets and did not allow anyone to roam as he pleased, especially the children. He had implemented the police force to apply these rules on everyone. Without permission, no one would be allowed to travel or enter any place. Edward gathered all the small children in an orphanage as he wanted to grew them up to be soldiers for his armies.
"I am grateful for your praise, Lord Baratheon." Said Varys with his eyes in his sleeves while speaking as humble as he could.
"Why did you come here, Lord Varys? I do not think I have any business with you." Said Edward trying to prop the spider. As long as he could control this man, everything would be fine. Maybe helping him save the Targaryen's children would gain him some favor.
"You must know why I am here, my lord. We both are smart people here that can benefit from little cooperation." Said Varys as he was looking at Edward. He was sure that with Edward's capabilities, he would know why he would come here. The simple proof for that was Edward met him alone without anyone from his family participating.
"You came here regarding the rumors in the Capitol, right? Let's try to end this matter as fast as we can since I have a lot to deal with here. I had nothing to do with these rumors. You can go and ask the old fox, Tywin, who wanted to stop this marriage. Here is an open secret. Tywin still hopes to marry his daughter to the prince, so who would be the one who would benefit from such a rumor." Said Edward as he wanted to throw all the blame on the old fox. Although Edward helped a little from behind the scene regarding the rumors about Rhaegar, he was sure that his men did not leave a trace behind.
"I know that you do not have anything to do with it, my lord. I came here so that we can help each other. I know what happened in the tourney between the prince and Lord Stark's daughter. So we can help each other here to make this marriage take place as soon as possible so that we can separate those two." Said Varys as he was looking at Edward. It seemed that his little birds did not manage to connect the traces to Edward. He did not know that Edward helped in spreading these rumors. But that had to be the case as Edward ordered his men to kill anyone that witnessed what happened, especially the little children.
Edward took his sweet time to think. He did not care about his brother's feelings at all, but he had to separate Rhaegar from Lyanna for the time being. It seemed that he would have to help raise Rhaegar's reputation this time so that this marriage could take place.
"What is it for me? I would have to help you regarding this rumor when all I have to do is to only leave a reminder for Lord Stark. I do not like to waste resources here." Said Edward with a knowing look. He knew why Varys was trying to get his help. It had to be that Varys sensed danger from what Rhaegar was doing. And if Rhaegar managed to take Lyanna away from Robert, A war might happen.
Varys was looking at Edward's eyes after hearing his words. He had heard many good things about Edward from his little birds lately. The common people in Stormsland literally loved this young lord as he was the one who made their lif this comfortable. They were all thankful to him. No one could find any who said something bad about him. They became the envy of the other Smallfolks from the other kingdoms. There was always a constant movement from the others to Stormsland in the past two years. Those who moved never returned as they could find good work and comfortable life there, so why would they do that?
Actually, Varys did not expect all that to come from such a young lord. He even wished that this man had the right of succession of the Iron throne. He was sure that the realm would be in good hands.
"I heard that you accept to be the hand of Prince Rhaegar when he took the throne, did not you, my lord?" Said Varys as he seemed to have thought of a good idea. If Edward worked for prince Rhaegar when he became the king, then Varys should help prince Rhaegar to be one as fast as possible.
But would Edward fall for such a trick? If Rhaegar had such help, Edward was not sure that he could come out in the next war with the results he hoped for, and he might suffer losses instead. So Edward had to misguide Varys about this one. He had to let Varys think that he was ready to support anyone but Rhaegar so that he would not put his hand in Rhaegar's.
"That was before what he did. What do you think a man should do when he saw someone looking at his brother's wife like that? Any honorable man would have killed him on the spot, but I have to act like that because he was the prince." Asked Edward with some sarcasm in his voice. He would not help Rhaegar nor have anything to do with the man, but he had to find a suitable reason for his own known reputation. And Since Edward always appeared as if he cared about honor, that would be easy to believe.
After hearing Edward's words, Varys's expression changed a little. If what he thought was true, did not that mean that Edward would never help Rhaegar? He had to think of something else to make Edward work as the king's hand.
"What about the king's hand?" Said Varys trying to lure Edward to such an attractive offer. He could use his position near the King's ears and persuade him to appoint Edward as his hand since he knew that the relationship between Aerys and Tywin would not give any fruits anymore.
