Nathan looked at Lisa blankly. "…did you not hear the part about a fundamental difference that is irreconcilable?"
"There are very few differences in this world that are truly irreconcilable. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions but that doesn't mean we can't get along with them," she said sagely.
His headache was growing worse. "Lisa, we want completely different things out of life and have very different life experiences. Even if she did like me back, it wouldn't work."
Amber frowned at him. "I thought you said she was like you and used you-know-what as an excuse."
Lisa looked back and forth between the two of them in confusion. "What's you-know-what?"
"A secret I swore to take to my grave," she replied with such theatrics that her mother laughed and dropped the issue. She was rather talented at deflecting, which was a useful skill to have.
"That serious, huh? Amber, can I talk to Nate alone for a minute?"
