Chapter 7 - Cooperation

Everett Ailan's/Malefici's P.O.V

"I don't believe you." I said flatly. There was no way my twin brother could be this guy.

His face fell. "Really? You don't recognize your own brother?"

He stepped into the light, and all the harsh qualities of the vampire faded away into warmer colors. "See? It's me, Everest."

"How in the world did you get those powers? When did this happen?" I said as I reverted myself as well.

He scratched his head. "About a week ago, I think. You remember when I got so sick that I had to go to the hospital?"

I nodded. "Is that when Sullivan first talked to you?"

His eyes widened. "You know him?"

"Luzor told me about him."

He laughed. "Anyway, what happened here? Aren't we supposed to get rid of these guys?"

"Not this one. I'm stuck as her battle partner, so I'm technically responsible for her now."

"Really? Hey Everett, do you think it's right that we should be killing the Heroes?"

"What? Of course we should! I'm tired of all those goody-two-shoes!"

His smile disappeared. "How did you get stuck with this?"

"Apparently I touched her head earlier without feeling any hatred. Take my advice, don't touch them, it'll ruin your life."

He nodded as he walked over to where the wizard slept. "What's her name?"

"Um, uh, I think she said it was Justine." I tried to recall her name. I haven't thought about calling her by her name this whole time.

"Justine, that does sound heroic to me. Everett?"

"What is it?"

"I don't want to be evil anymore, it just doesn't feel right."

"What? You must be crazy! Are you getting sick or something?"

He furrowed his eyebrows. "I'm not crazy Everett! I am still planning on being the Vampire user, I just want some sort of connection to the Heroes."

If he were anyone else, I would have backhanded them for saying that. But this was my brother, and even if it seemed wrong, I had to at least try to honor his wishes.

"Do you have a battle partner yet Everest?"

He shook his head. "Why?"

"Justine wasn't the only one knocked unconscious back at the school, there should be another Hero there in the back. You should see if you can get along with that one."

"You want me to go? Are you ok with this? Are you sure this will be alright?"

I waved my hand. "Everest, this girl couldn't harm a fly, really. She actually tried. I think she'll like you."

I watched as Everest turned back into the vampire. "And just so you know, don't call me Everest when either of us are transformed. It's Galifici!" He said as he sped out of the forest and back into the city through the shaded areas.

I traced the same pattern on my arm, just in case this girl was going to wake up soon.

"I wonder if you know who I am in real life, Justine."

Lucy Rudolf's/Justine's P.O.V

I remember fading in and out of consciousness for a while. Who knows how long it has been.

Arch was with me just a few minutes ago, but now I could no longer feel her presence. That's right! Malefici made us fire our own magic at each other! That monster!

I jolted upright, but I was held down by a strong arm. "Calm yourself, I'm not going to hurt you."

I recognized this voice, it was Malefici.

If only I didn't feel extremely weak right now, I would have pulverized him. "What are you doing here?" I said bitterly as I put my head back. "You could have killed me if you wanted to, you know."

He frowned. "I know that. It was a pain to try to find and kill you, but it would be a bigger pain to actually do it."

"What do you mean?"

"Apparently we established some sort of connection, and it would be breaking the rules to fight you."

I turned my head away. "Aren't you going to jump at the chance to break the rules? It's your fault I ended up in the hospital two weeks ago, why should I trust you?"

"Me? What did I do? I don't even know who you are!"

"You're the one who dumped water all over the electrical outlets in my room! I was put into a coma because of you!"

Malefici shook his head. "That was not me, Justine."

I held my tongue. The last thing I wanted was for Malefici to know my identity. If I told him that he destroyed my house, that would be a dead giveaway.

"Ok, then who was it?"

"Geez, how am I supposed to know!" He raised his voice. "I may be all powerful, but I can't see everything that goes on."

I forced myself up a second time, but Malefici tried to put me down again. I swatted his hand away and stood up.

"So what now? We can't kill each other."

Malefici crossed his arms and started to walk back to the city. "You see that building over there?"

He pointed his finger at the second tallest building in the city. "There are actual monsters living in that thing, Luzor told me that they would try to kill both of us. We need to get rid of them."

"We? Why would I team up with you!? You almost killed me back there!"

He was about to argue with me again, but I was startled by the black smoke that evaporated from me.

It manifest into a humanoid shape and seemed to stand next to Malefici.

"Is this the one?" A deep voice echoed through the forest.

Malefici sighed. "Sadly, yes."

The figure appeared to shake it's head and walk a couple steps forward.

"Whatever Malefici says from here on out will always be the truth, and he is the one that quote unquote "healed" you. Polori already knows about all of this, and you two will be responsible for each other."

I involuntarily clenched my teeth. "Fine, but what about those monsters up there? Can we deal with them ourselves?"

"Of course not! What you two need to do right now is find others. You will get yourself killed if you go up there now."

"Find the others? The only others ones I know of are Vitas and Arch, I didn't think there was anyone else."

"There are many others of your kind, like the Angel, the Knight, the Fairy, Mermaid, Mage, Cupid, and even a unicorn!" he choked the last word out.

Malefici cringed. "That's disgusting."

"And that's why you became one of us." Luzor commented.

"Hey, I've been meaning to ask. Why are all the girls Heroes and the guys Villains? You would think it would be a little mixed up."

"Do you realize how hard it would be to find a guy that believes in fairies and unicorns? In case you haven't realized it yet, it's impossible. We do it this way because its easier."

I frowned. "Ok, fine. So who should we find?"

Malefici started to walk away again. The black smoke just trailed behind him.

"Anyone. Find anyone in the city that we be of good use."

The smoke seeped into Malefici's skin and disappeared.

"Just because were partners doesn't mean that I don't hate you." Malefici turned his head away and jumped onto a nearby building. A scythe started to manifest in his hand, this one being an exact copy of the one he had back at the school.

Maybe it was from the pure, heroic blood that I now had with me, or maybe I was still out of it from what happened at the school, but I didn't say anything in return.
