Chapter 1 - Beginning

'I was always alone. Pretty cliche line, but it is true. My parents died when I was only two years old. I can't remember anything about them; all I have are old pictures. My younger sister, Amy, and I were taken in by my uncle. He doesn't work, which leaves everything to me.'

'My younger sister is always lying in a hospital bed, on the brink of death. My uncle doesn't help with paying the bills; he leaves everything with me to deal. It wasn't until a couple of months ago when my uncle finally kicked me out of the house. He severed all connection with my sister and me.'

'I am only sixteen, but I already have two jobs. I work at a grocery store during the day, and at night, I work at a restaurant. I usually find a bench in a park to sleep. I know I could rent a place to stay, but I wouldn't have enough money to pay for Amy's hospital bills.'

'Amy still thinks I live with our uncle. I couldn't bring myself to tell her I slept on a bench nowadays.'

'She is the only thing I have left. I would do anything to protect her. Even if I had to put my life on the line, I would do anything to protect her...'

---

"Doctor, Amy seems to be getting worse by the day. What can we do to help her?"

"Kura, there isn't much we can do. We can only keep the disease at bay. Sooner or later, the infection will spread to the rest of her body. After that, we won't be able to help her at all. By our estimations, she only has a couple more months to lives. I suggest that you spend some time with her."

The doctor slowly stood up. As he was walking out of the room, he turned back and said, "Kura, don't tell Amy about how long she has to live. She might not be able to take the shock."

Once the door closed, Kura punched the wall. There was a faint dent in the wall where his punch had landed. Kura had always been a little stronger than the average person.

'I won't accept this. I will find a way to help Amy.'

Tears were streaming down Kura's cheek.

'Nothing else matters in this world. If I lose Amy, I have no reason to continue.'

Kura strengthened his resolve and made his way out of the room. Amy was asleep, so he didn't plan on interrupting her.

'I need a new job. These jobs do not pay enough. I need more money to put into research.'

As Kura was walking along the sidewalk, his phone started buzzing. It wasn't just his though, everyone's phone began buzzing. Kura pulled his phone out of his pocket to see a national emergency.

In the message sent out, everyone was to immediately make their way to a safe place and lock the doors. It wasn't just America, Countries all over the world were sending out the same message.

As Kura finished reading the message, a blue portal thing appeared in front of him. A green leg stepped out of the portal. What came out looked like a goblin. The goblin had a large sword in its hand. The goblin ran to the nearest person and stabbed them right in the chest. That was when all the panic began.

People screamed and began to run away, but more and more goblins were appearing from the portal. There were too many. Everywhere you looked, blood soaked the ground.

Kura quickly pulled out a knife from his pocket.

'I am not dying here.'

Kura gritted his teeth and held his ground.

Everyone noticed Kura staying behind to fight. They all silently thanked him. Even if it was unintentional, Kura had spared them some time to run away.

One of the goblins finally noticed Kura and pulled its weapon from one of the dead bodies lying on the ground. The goblin charged at Kura, holding the sword up above its head.

As the goblin was about to hit its target, Kura quickly moved out of the way. The strike bounced off the ground and caused the goblin to stumble. Kura took this opportunity to stab the goblin from behind.

The knife cleanly cut through the goblin's skull. Blood dripped from the wound onto Kura's hand. Kura looked like the monster in this situation.

The rankings went down to one-hundred, but it seemed that only three people were on the leaderboard at the moment.

[Killed a goblin. +6 experience.]

[Function unlocked: Stats.]

Everyone got the first four messages, but Kura and anyone else who killed a monster got the last system messages.

Kura was surprised to see the messages; even more surprised that he got the first kill. Even though messages were appearing in his head, it didn't bother Kura. First, monsters started attacking, and now messages were appearing in his head. Kura wasn't too shocked.

The other goblins quickly noticed their dead companion on the ground. They looked at the perpetrator and were surprised to see a weak human. Three of the goblins broke off from the large group that was still slaughtering people and ran towards Kura.

Kura met the first goblin head-on, swiftly dodging the blade descending towards him. Kura stabbed the knife into the goblin's chest; blood drizzled from the goblin's chest. The goblin fell to the ground as Kura pulled the knife out of the dead goblin's chest.

Kura got into an attacking position, prepared for the next goblin.

'What is this feeling. Each time I kill one of these goblins, I can feel myself becoming more proficient with the knife.'

Kura took a step back as a sword came speeding towards him. The goblin's sword grazed Kura's face; blood trickled down Kura's face. A pained expression appeared on Kura's face.

After the attack, the goblin couldn't bring the sword back up to protect itself, which resulted in the goblin getting a knife to the head.

As Kura stabbed the goblin in the head, another sword descended on him. Kura quickly pulled the dead goblin above his head.

'These goblins are lighter than I had thought.'

Kura was surprised by the weight of the goblins, but that didn't stop him from protecting himself from the incoming sword.

The sword cut the dead goblin that Kura was using as a shield right in half, but Kura had already backed off. Kura charged at the goblin and stabbed it in the head.

The last goblin noticed that it was in a disadvantageous position and called for the rest of its companions. The goblin turned and began running away, but Kura wouldn't let the goblin live. A knife stabbed right through the goblin's heart before it could take more than three steps.

The other goblins turned around to find four dead goblins at Kura's feet. Rage flared in their eyes.

"I won't let any of you damn little green shits get past me. If you want to die, come and fight me."

Kura had an evil sneer on his face. Kura would die before he let any of the goblins get past him. Behind Kura was the hospital in which Amy lies. Kura would protect Amy at any cost.

The goblins couldn't understand what Kura was saying, but they could tell that Kura was making fun of them. The goblins all created a path, and out came a giant goblin with blood all over it.

'This must be the boss. It looks strong; one strike from that thing, and I am dead.'

The giant goblin continued leisurely walking towards Kura. It didn't think that a puny human could kill it.

As the giant goblin was about to reach its target, Kura charged at it. The goblin just sneered and swung its giant sword down at Kura.

Blood splattered all over the ground.

"ARGGGGHHHHH!"

The giant goblin screamed in pain as its arm fell to the ground.

Kura was about to be hit by the giant goblin's sword, but just as Kura was going to be sliced open, he swiftly dodged while brandishing the knife at the giant goblin's arm. It was a clean cut.

The giant goblin looked at Kura in fear, but it was already too late. While the giant goblin had been trying to recover from losing its arm, Kura had already started charging at the giant goblin. The knife in Kura's hand ripped through the giant goblin's heart like it was butter.

"You goblins are weak. Yall are easy prey."

When the rest of the goblins saw their commander fall to the ground, fear permeated their eyes.

The goblins slowly began backing up, but Kura wasn't going to let them escape.

---

Twenty minutes later, everything quieted down. Kura ripped out the knife from the last goblin's heart. Blood dripped from Kura's body. All you could see around Kura was a bloody battlefield.

"I am finally done. That sure took some effort."

'I got two messages early that I had leveled up. I wonder what that means. Earlier on, it said I unclocked the stats function. Do I just think the word, 'stats'?'

As Kura thought about opening the 'stat' menu, a holographic image appeared in front of Kura's eyes.

[Kura -

'Whoa, it's just like a video game. Knife Master explains why that whenever I kill a goblin, I get more proficient with the knife. It truly is an overpowered passive skill.'

As Kura was about to go inside the gate, he saw something shiny from the corner of his eyes. Kura turned to look at the shiny object and found it beneath the dead, giant goblin.

'Hmm, it dropped a weapon?'

Kura walked over the dead, giant goblin and picked up the shiny object.

It was a shiny knife with blue lines carved in it. Whenever Kura held the knife, he could feel a pulse coming from the weapon.

'Whoa, this knife feels way better than my one right now. Whenever I hold it, I can feel power rush into me. It's like it has a mind of its own.'

Kura could feel that this weapon was powerful and was an excellent drop.

'Although I can't check the stats of the weapon like in normal games, this weapon should be a peak weapon for a beginner.'

What Kura did not know was that this weapon only had a 0.00001% drop rate. It was a one-of-a-kind weapon.

'Now, it is time to enter the portal.'

Kura stuck his foot through the portal to see if it was safe to pass through, but his foot only struck the floor.

Kura pulled out his knife and walked into the portal.

'Let's see what you have to offer me.'

---

As Kura was walking inside the portal, Kaida just finished killing all the slimes in the area.

"How can spiders be so hard to kill."

Kaida leaned against the wall panting. Giant spiders lay everywhere around her. Every single one of the spiders was chopped open, blood slowly dripping out of their bodies.

"Ah, I had better go and see what the portal has in it."

Kaida slowly stood up and began walking towards the portal.

---

"Damn it! How the hell can they have more kills than me!"

Daisuke was screaming in rage.

"They can't be better than me; they are just fucking trash who got lucky."

Daisuke was only halfway through with killing all of his slimes.

---

As Kura stepped from the portal, he could feel a powerful killing intent directed at him.

Kura looked in the direction of where the killing intent was and saw a giant goblin. Although this goblin was the same size as the giant goblin Kura had already killed, Kura could feel that this goblin was on a whole different level.

"Damn, this boss is going to be a tough one to kill."

Kura quickly pulled out his new knife and charged towards the boss goblin, but before Kura could even reach the goblin, a blade descended towards him.

'Holy shit, this thing is fast as hell.'

Kura immediately put two stat points into agility and strength. Kura planned on saving the rest for other times when he needed them.

Kura was able to dodge the giant sword just in the nick of time. If Kura hadn't added the two extra stat points into agility, he would already be dead. The giant goblin was a little bit surprised, but it quickly recovered. It swung its giant sword at Kura again. Kura sidestepped to the left before the giant sword could hit him.

'I need to end this fast before I end up messing up.'

As another attack was descending towards Kura, Kura pulled his knife above his head and charged at the giant goblin. The giant sword collided with the small knife, but to the giant goblin's surprise, the giant sword was the one pushed back.

'Damn! This knife is too powerful!'

Dodging the giant sword has caused Kura to lose some momentum, but the resulting impact had caused the giant goblin to lose its balance. Kura brandished the knife multiple times at the goblin's chest; the giant goblin's heart was sliced open into two pieces.

Kura stood above the dead goblin, looking at the system messages.

[System Announcement; Kura was the first to clear a dungeon.]

[System Announcement; Function Dungeon Cleared Leaderboard has been unlocked.]

'I was the first again? How is the government not the first to clear a dungeon? They have weapons that could easily obliterate these monsters.'

Kura didn't put too much thought into it. Kura stood up and looked over the loot he had gained from the giant goblin. Aside from some silver coins, which Kura did not know the use for, there was a purple-colored ring. Although the purple-colored ring couldn't compare to the blue sword, its rarity wasn't any less inferior than the blue knife. The purple-colored ring was also a one-of-a-kind accessory that only had a drop rate of 0.0001%. Kura's luck was unfathomable; even gods would tremble in rage at Kura's luckiness.

'I wonder if these drops are good. Probably not, I am never that lucky.'

If a god heard Kura's thoughts, they would surely pass out in rage.

When Kura put the ring on, he felt his whole body go under a qualitative transformation. Power rushed through Kura's body, even more power than the sword had given.

There are many types of equipment, including accessories. Equipment can either be crafted or looted from monsters. Accessories, like the purple-colored ring, are equipment that can rank near the top of the equipment. Accessories can boosts stats to a whole new level, depending on their grade, of course. Accessories boosting hidden attributes like luck, endurance, and charisma are almost impossible to find.

Kura could feel his body getting lighter with every passing second. His strength was also increasing. The purple-colored ring is an agility-type ring. It will increase agility many times over; depending on the grade, it could increase even more. Although, most accessories didn't just boost one stat. The purple-colored ring increased strength and vitality as well.

Strength is how much force there is behind an attack. Agility is how fast you can move and how fast your reaction time is. Vitality strengthens your body to protect itself. The higher the vitality stat, the more arduous it is to penetrate your skin. Intelligence is how much mana you have and how fast your mana recovers.

'I feel so much more energized. With this much energy, I could tackle a few more dungeons, if there are any more left.

What Kura did not know was that the world was in a complete panic. Guns and other advanced technology did not affect monsters. Gun could only push the monsters back a little. 10% of the population was already brutally massacred by monsters. Governments were mass-producing any weapon that could cause harm to monsters. Most people had already taken to using knives.

---

"Whomever Kura is, I need to meet him. He has already killed so many monsters and even defeated his boss monster."

Kaida was amazed by Kura's speed. Even Kaida was only halfway through with killing her boss monster.

---

Daisuke's face froze as he read the system announcement. He had only just entered the portal to fight the boss monster.

"He probably has a full party of people letting him kill all the monsters."

Daisuke had a crazy expression on his face. Daisuke couldn't accept being outmatched by anyone. What made Daisuke truly angry was that it wasn't just one person who is ahead of him.

Daisuke pulled out his phone and began dialing someone.

"Mochizuki, I need you to find someone and kill them. He is the first placer on the Monster Kill Leaderboard. I will give you three million dollars. Do it within the next week."

"Daisuke, I want five million. If he is strong enough to be in the first place, I will have a hard time killing him."

Daisuke rolled his eyes. Mochizuki didn't even consider the idea that he would fail the operation. Mochizuki just wanted to get some more cash out of Daisuke.

"Fine, but you had better get it done."

Daisuke concluded the call with a sneer on his face.

"Your fame will be over shortly."

---

As Kura finished collecting all the loot, everything around him started crumbling. After everything had disappeared, Kura found himself back on the street full of dead bodies.

Kura looked around to find any survivors, but there weren't any people within this district.

Kura found a clothing shop along the way and 'borrowed' some clothes.

'It's not considered stealing. I saved quite a few lives today. I think I deserve these clothes.'

Kura left the shop with brand new clothes. Kura looked completely different from before. When Kura had walked into the shop, there was not a single strand of fabric visible because of all the monster blood.

'The smell will have to stay until I can get a shower at the hospital.'

Kura quickly made his way to the hospital. He was a little worried about Amy.

As Kura rounded the corner to the hospital, he spotted a few men holding sharp, metal bats. The men seemed to be guarding the hospital entrance. Kura quickly ran towards the hospital entrance. The men noticed Kura and got into an attacking position.

"Hey, how have you still not found shelter!"

"I was at my house when everything started; I need to see my sister."

When the men guarding the hospital heard that he had a relative in the hospital, they stepped aside.

As Kura was about to enter the hospital, one of the men grabbed his shoulder.

"Why the hell do you have the stench of blood on you."

"I wouldn't have made it all the way here without running into a few goblins."

The man seemed a little suspicious, but he unwillingly let Kura into the hospital.

Kura quickly ran up the hospital stairs to the top floor. Kura opened the door to Amy's room and found her staring intently at the tv screen.

As the door opened, Amy looked over.

"BROTHER! I was so worried about you! Why didn't you answer my phone calls?"

Amy tried to get up from the bed to check on Kura but didn't have the strength. Amy scowled.

"Don't push yourself. I made my way over as soon as possible."

Kura didn't tell Amy about the goblin raid; it would only worry her.

"Ughhh, you stink. Use the bathroom to take a shower. Also, did you see those system announcements earlier! The first person to get a kill was someone named Kura. I wonder, big bro, what were you doing while I was lying in bed."

Amy looked over at Kura to see what his reaction was, but he only smiled. Amy knew Kura was hiding something.

Kura thanked Amy and went to the bathroom to take a shower. As Kura was getting undressed, he noticed that his muscles had gotten larger. There was also a tattoo on the shoulder of his arm. The tattoo was of black flames.

"What the hell, when did I get a tattoo? It does look pretty cool, although. Everything is different about me. This system is amazing."

---

As Kura finished taking a shower, he said his goodbyes to Amy. He told her that he was going to look for survivors with a group of people. Kura was planning on going alone, although.

Kura only had to walk two-hundred meters when he found yet another dungeon. This one, although, had wolves roaming the entrance. The wolves didn't seem to wander off too far from the portal.

When the wolves noticed Kura, they immediately charged at him. Kura pulled out the blue knife and met the wolves head-on.

'This is going to be a long night.'

Kura sighed as he drove his knife through the forehead of one of the wolves.
