KELECHI'S POV
Have you ever wanted to just fast forward your life? Like just grab the remote control and forward it so you won't have to go through the inevitable? Escape from whatever consequences of your actions might be. Well, I have felt that way a million times.
My situation right then didn't look so good at all. Everything seemed to have gotten wrong. Mama was probably going to end me once I'm home, my dad was surely going to blame me for dragging Ben in one of my "reckless decisions". Sure, he was right. Most of my decision were not all that…. What word should I use for it? Boring! Yes, boring. Most of my decisions were not all that boring. They were sensible and interesting. Something my entire family would disagree.
" Y'know, everyone back home thinks we slept at Mercy's place." Ben said calmly as he kept his arms around me. With his chin resting on my head, I could feel him talk.
"Since when did you too get so close?" I was still pricked by the little drama they acted.
"She is my friend too, remember?"
" No, she wasn't. She was my friend only! " I pulled away a little from his arm. Just a little to see his face. "Plus, you guys hardly ever spoke to each other."
" That's not how I remember it." Ben gave me a look. "Yes, we hardly ever talked to each other in person. But, we did speak a lot on WhatsApp."
"She has your number?" At this point, the shock was clearly evident on my face. Until that moment, I had not known, Mercy was way close Ben than I had thought. She always seemed too shy to talk to him in person. But, she was suddenly bold on WhatsApp? Bold enough to have his number and chat him up? Wow!
Was she acting all shy in my presence to fool me? If she was, then she did a good job of it. I would not have suspected it if Ben didn't just tell me now.
"Yeah, I thought you knew. We're you not the one that gave her my number, wanting us to be friends too?"
"Now, that's a new one. I didn't give it to her!" My stomach chose precisely that moment to grumble. See? Even my stomach doesn't agree with Mercy being all chummy with Ben.
"Wow, that was loud." He had that cheeky smile like he knew what I was thinking. "Let's go get breakfast."
I only nodded. I was still surprised about Mercy did. Ben might not really realize it; but Mercy had been acting like she didn't talk to him. She acted all shy and innocent in my presence but was something else with Ben. I wonder how many more times she had fooled me. Not just me, but everyone. Because to many people, she was a sweet gentle girl while I was the wild one. Especially in school, among our coursemate, she was the easy going assistant course rep. What if she was only pretending?
For the first time I wondered, if our friendship was real, if she hadn't been my friend just to be closer to Ben.
