Chapter 1 - A Faulty Sparkie

No! No, no, no! It was happening again! A searing pain cut down the exact middle of my body. It felt like some monster was inside of that invisible crack and was pushing me apart slowly but forcefully. I rolled on the cold, dusty, cement floor of my cell and grabbed my abdomen. My howls of pain bounced down the walls of my empty floor, not even a fellow patient to talk to. A red light blinked above the door at the end of the hall and five guys in uniform strode in. Another rip of pain tore through my body and my vision went black for a while. When I gained the gift of sight once more, I was in the hospital wing. The Wavie nurse stood inside The Glass Box with me. I could never be treated outside of The Box when I was having these attacks, I'm told that strange things happen. The Wavie is moving her hands above me in a calming motion, trying to ease the pain because they can't fix the mistake they made.

Everyone has a hair color; pink, blue, yellow, brown, red, orange, or purple. Those hair colors mean something, your hair color tells the world what your powers are. The nurse above my writhing body has sky blue hair cut into a bob, signifying that she is a Wavie, or has Water abilities. My powers are not natural. My image-obsessed Sparkie parents let the Government test a new power on me. I was going to be the first of my kind, a Heavie. They concocted a formula for my baby self that would give me hair that was such a dark purple it looked black, and I would also be able to control Gravity. Unfortunately, they didn't have everything figured out like they said they did. I didn't end up as the first Heavie. I became a Faulty Sparkie and was shipped off to Illwood Asylum by the time I was three years old, which is when our powers are fully developed. I can control Gravity, but I can also control small bits of Electricity, just static. The Government had to use Magnetism to make Gravity but they hadn't figured it out entirely either. They messed up and gave me only one pole of a Magnet, two South poles, and everyone knows what happens when you try to connect two South poles, they repel each other, which is exactly what my body is trying to do right now. Trying to get rid of the other half.

I still feel the splitting pain in the middle of my body but it has lessened now, lessened enough for me to think of something I should have thought of before. Why not use Gravity to push myself back together? I clumsily raise my hands and push them to my aching ribs. I must have broken a few again. I push with all the Gravity I can pull from my exhausted body at the moment. The two poles resist and push back against me, now my arms and my center are in agony. The Wavie notices what I'm doing and rushes over to remove my arms from my sides.

"Raylee no! That will only make it worse! You need to wait for your body to settle down on its own. Lay still and let me ease the pain." I scream when her hands touch my wrists, she sighs and talks into the microphone she has attached to the lapels of her light grey lab coat.

"Rockies, restrain patient 540. Wrists on top of shoulders." The brown gem on my necklace glows as do two brown dots on the inside of my wrists. Against my will, my wrists move to my shoulders and thin metal poles grow out of the gems in my skin. the gem on my neck and connect to keep my hands from moving away from my shoulders. Thankfully it doesn't hurt but I scream anyways. After what feels like another hour of screaming, when it was only ten minutes, I passed out from the pain.

I wake up after a peaceful sleep, my stomach and chest feel sore as does between my legs, but my eye itches too. I try to move my hand to reach my eye but it's stuck in place, just like my other hand. I start to thrash around and get myself free. Heels click on linoleum floors.

"Rockies, release patient 540." My hands fly out and smack the medical bed I'm lying on with a sharp smack, I groan.

"Well, that's what you get for freaking out Raylee. Sit up, I want to check and make sure my bindings work." I realize that I'm lying naked, save for a few bindings going down the middle of my body. I'm still in The Glass Box in the hospital wing. I groan again.

"I had another attack didn't I Doctor Bit?" She nodded and checked my magicked bindings.

The magic that Doctor Bit uses to ease the pain helps by making you forget about your pain. I only know about my attacks because I remember the first one that happened when I was three. That attack was the one that caused me to be taken away from my parents. I've seen the tapes of my writhing body and metal objects that I somehow Magnetized flying around the room. That's why the Rockies stay far away from me, since they can control metal, I can control them.

I sigh. I don't know how my body goes back to normal with two South poles in me and I don't want to know at what expense to my body. I'm just thankful that I can stand again, even if I have to go back to my lonely hall of cells. Bit throws light grey sweats and a shirt at me to wear, I look down at my bare feet and pout.

"I just had an attack Bit, pity me and get me some socks? Pretty please?" Socks were precious to me, do you know how cold the cement floors get on a level that no one goes on? Freaking freezing! Bit caves in and asks for grey socks over the mic on her coat.

"Fuzzy socks?" Bit glares at me,

"Don't push it."

Doctor Bit is the only one who will even talk to a failed experiment such as me. I think the others just look at me and don't see an isolated twelve-year-old girl, they see a reminder of their failure. I spend so much time in The Glass Box with Bit that I consider her my only friend and she will sometimes give me spoils such as socks.

"When the Rockies get here with your socks it will be time for you to go, don't mess with the bindings. I will see you tomorrow to take them off. and don't eat too much from my cupboard." Bit gives me a stern look, "And most importantly, don't touch anything. Got it?"

I nod my head solemnly, only mocking her a little, and she lets me out of The Box so I can stretch my legs.
