Kal Se stood at attention even though it took everything in him to not mock his superior officer. He wasn't a big kid standing at five foot seven inches with an average build, the only thing remarkable about him was his steel grey eyes, accenuated by his raven black hair.
"You scored the highest in the class on all of your written exams, however your physical scores are extremely lacking." Captain Thomas said disgustedly.
" That puts your final grade at district 13 as 80% which is the bare minimum to enter the rifts." Captain Thomas didnt want to admit that. "I may not be able to stop you, but i suggest you dont enter the rift tomorrow. It takes more then brains to brave the path to ascenion. It takes strength, which you barely have. Even more important to success is funding which none of."
The Rift was a dimensional tear that led to a dimension humans call Ascension. Technology was useless there but those who progressed through gained abilites humanity only dreamed of in the past.
"I'll take your advice into consideration." Kal replied, even though he was disgusted. He knew as an orphan with no financial backing everyone was against him. Usually only the rich got to enter Ascension, the only reason he was considered was because he used the money he got when his parents died to enroll in this school and buy his first pass.
Captain Thomas realized that nothing he said was going to stop Kal from going tomorrow. He grunted "Don't say I didn't warn you kid. Your dismissed."
After Kal left the office Captain Thomas picked up his phone and called his boss.
"He just left, I don't think hes going to listen.
The voice on the other line replied "I guess we've done all we can then."
The next day Kal approached the building that housed the rift excitedly with his pass in hand. He walked up to the guard at the door and flashed it to be let in the building.
He was let threw the door into a small reception area. There was a woman behind a dark wood desk who smiled up at him as he entered. "Hello, and welcome to the Bridge building in this territory, how can i assist you today?"
Kal approached the desk and brought his pass out, "I've got a one month pass that starts on today and would like to enter ascension for the first time." he smiled in excitment.
She smiled and grabbed a key out of her desk. "Follow me we got some forms to fill out and we will get you on your way." They entered a pristine hallway, the floors seemed to be made out of white marble.
She brought him to a room 203 and entered, "Here are the forms you need to fill out." she said as she pulled some papers out of a desk at the back of the room. " This room will be yours for the month, you can extend it by buying a new pass." She pointed to a rectangular device on the far wall of the room.
"That is your rift device, when activated it will allow you to enter Ascension. In ascention each human settlement has one that will bring you back here. You can only return to you own room."
"You will notice the warning sheet in the back of your paperwork. The first time you enter ascention is extremely painful. Your body has not been primed for the abilities it will recieve. You will also generate your soul item at that time."
Kal couldnt wait to see what his soul item was, they are items that are unique to the user and the only item that will progress with its user threw out the entirety of the Ascension path. It will also determine what class you ended up as.
He finished up his paperwork as fast as he could and handed them to the lady. She looked them over and handed him his key and left the room.
Kal walked over to the Rift Gate and pushed the big green button that activated the rift. A purple light started to gather until it encompassed the interior of the door way.
Kal hesitated for a brief moment while staring at the door way, he took a deep breathe and thought to himself, " Come on Kal, your future awaits."
He took his first step threw the doorway.
