Sergeant Kace looked at my eager look before he shook his head not sure how to handle my new emotions, I was like a completely different person from who I was a month ago and he didn't quite know how to deal with me. "We need a better place than this Bruni, we will turn and fight soon but only when we get to a better position that at least gives us a chance at a favorable outcome," he said as he urged his horse ahead of mine to keep it running.
"Do we really need a better position, this place is as good as any isn't it?" I asked as a mad light twinkled in my eye.
Sergeant Kace just shook his head and motioned us to follow him to a rise not too far away, he didn't like to agree with an almost mad mage but I was right as well, where could they find a better place to make ready for the coming soldiers that offered enough natural barriers instead of stopping sooner and creating their own barriers to stop the incoming soldiers.
Seeing Kace change direction I smiled and followed close as we made our way to the rise. Once we got to the hillock a great amount of activity erupted as orders to the 12 soldiers and the 5 sparks began to belt out from Sergeant Kace and sergeant Volk.
No one dared order me around, I was almost more of a threat to the group then the persuing group but they had no way of outrunning the force sent after us, to many scouts were deployed on their part for us to be able to escape so a quick defensive formation was set up as Kace and Richard set up a 4-foot wall in a circle at the top of the hill with the odd spike of stone facing outwards to deter any cavalry charges against our position, Volk kept the soldiers digging a shallow trench around the outside wall to help ease the burden on the 2 Earth mages but not a lot could be done in 2 hours but every inch would matter in the coming conflict.
I sat on one of the low walls as a flurry of activity proceeded around me, Fes and Hes stood behind me a little ways, watching to make sure I didn't run off at Kace's command and Bell set up a tent and started to boil water to sterilize bandages to wrap around the injuries that were going to be caused by the small fight.
After everything that could be prepared for the coming battle, Kace handed out a small bottle of spirits he had in his bag to the soldiers before bringing out an ointment and gave it to Bell who would be running the First Aid station.
Volk gathered everyone and started to come up with a strategy that gave us the best chance of survival, it revolved around keeping them out of our makeshift walls, if we couldn't then they would overrun us with sheer numbers, if they included me in the makeshift magical core then we had overwhelming power on our hands but Volk couldn't count on a half-mad mage to make rational choices so he left me out of any planning which was wise because I didn't care for strategy or for a 'plan' all I wanted to do was kill them all and I didn't need a plan to do that so I ignored any attempts of asking for my input on the soldiers as excitement slowly grew inside me.
Shortly after everyone agreed to the 'plan' we seen an advanced scout inspect our makeshift defenses before taking off back towards the now slowly approaching attackers. they slowed their pace when they saw us preparing for them so that they could plan their own strategy.
I saw the scout return but couldn't care less I figured we had about a half-hour before they attacked because any longer then that and dusk would start to set in and a night attack against even a lightly defensive position was suicide, to many things could go wrong in the dark of night.
Kace approached me after he got the soldiers situated in the proper places and Volk helped set up a big cauldron for Bell to use in the center of camp. "Boy, are you alright to fight?" he asked simply.
I snorted at his question, he had the gull to still call me a boy after what I had done, after the gods only knew how many innocent people I had killed, burned alive, or mutilated while under a will casting. "I have never been more ready Sergeant," I responded angrily before continuing, "You have no idea what those bastards did to me, what they forced me to do, i am prepared to strangle the life from each and every one of them. So let me ask you Sergeant are you ready for what's to come?" I asked angrily as my eyes lit up in power and anger.
Kace looked at me with sad eyes, before he almost patted my shoulder but froze when i glared at the offending appendage. "Bruni, I need you to promise to follow orders in the upcoming engagement, it could mean the life and death of all of us if you don't follow orders, all I ask is that when we call for the fire that you don't hold back!" he asked as he put his hand back down to his side.
At the question, I laughed out loud and smiled widely at Kace before patting him on the shoulder, "how many do you want me to save for the rest of you?" I asked arrogantly.
Kace just laughed and responded honestly, "None, if you are capable of killing them all then I implore that you do so Bruni." he said as he turned and walked back to the soldiers who were now encouraged to hear the crazy mage boast.
