Mordred's eyes snapped open . The first thing he noticed was the sharp pain on his lower back ,and he shifted around until the stone that was causing it rolled away . He lay there, looking up at the bottom of the bridge he called his home when he noticed the chill .
He sat up ,and goosebumps raised across his skin . He shivered as he rubbed his hands fervently together turning to look at his friends . Irregulars all of them . The bottom of the bridge was littered with sleeping bags and packets of food . There was a giant barrel at the center of the makeshift camp that should be blazing , providing heat in this damp environment . But it was dead .
Fuming ,he turned to Alexis , the only Pyro in their group. He opened his mouth to call out to her and his breath came out as fog . Frowning at the natural chill , he was about to call out to her when he paused and looked at their group .
Six people in total . All tired and exhausted . They needed their rest ,especially with what they had planned today . Concentrating slightly ,he felt the familiar tingle that run done his spine when he used his powers .
Drawing the surrounding air into his lungs , he willed it to cool , to freeze until it felt like his lungs were being frozen over , then exhaling , he directed everything at the Pyrokinetic . Her powers over fire gave a certain immunity to the chill ,meaning while everyone was silently suffering ,she was relatively okay .
For a few moments there was no change ,then as her skin gained a hint of blue , her eyes snapped open .She was about to use her powers to warm herself when she noticed Mordreds actions .She stilled as he stopped and gave her a reproachful look.
She looked around at their camp before her gaze came to rest at the barrel and she gave him a sheepish smile .She opened her mouth , probably to apologize but Mordred stopped her with a finger to his mouth .He looked around at the camp trying to communicate his intent , and she seemed to understand . Standing as quietly as possible she drowsily shuffled over to the barrel , her fingers already glowing like dying embers .
A few hours later , Mordred watched as everyone took their breakfast -a pack of chips and a cup full of an energy drink . As he watched them , he wondered how their lives would have turned up if they hadn't been so fucked up by their families . Madison , a young telepath , maybe 16 , just slightly older than him ,and the leader of the group , looked up as though sensing his thoughts and smiled comfortingly .
Mordred returned the smile but clamped down on his thoughts , reinforcing them and forcing her out . He learned the hard way not to let anyone into his mind . He sighed as he pulled on his gloves . He wore clothes that covered every part of his body for reasons that even his group was unaware of.
Even if all of them could have better alternate lives , he was an exception because of ,if anything ,who his father was . It was completely and utterly impossible He shook his head and returned his attention to the task at hand .
Their group of six were all irregulars who had runaway from society , friends or family , with no interest of joining any organization or group . In order to survive , they had to rob food manufacturing industries or storage facilities at least once every three weeks or so for supplies.
Right now , their food source was depleted and so another heist was needed.
Their target was an insta-food manufacturing plant five blocks away on Frolick street .In Recolt city there is a network of tunnels that major businesses use as escape routes for employees in case of emergencies or storage facilities .
The insta-food plant they were raiding stored their back up generator in one of the tunnels underneath it ,at least according to Madison .
The plan was for Mordred to call down a slightly serious thunderstorm in the streets around the plant to cut off their electricity . Meanwhile, Antonio , an asian kid with a sonar wave ability would lead Alexis and Chris - a boy who claimed to be able to manipulate the elements but so far hadn't shown the strength nor the capability - through the tunnels and cut off the personnel who were to turn on the generator .
Using the exit the employees used ,they'd sneak into the building and open the front door for the rest of them . Madison would manipulate the workers into ignoring them while they grabbed enough food to last them another couple of weeks then escape through the tunnels .
Well , that was the plan , and it worked perfectly at the beginning . The thunderstorm drained quite a bit of Mordreds strength but he recovered enough to keep going. They got into the building, gathered enough food and a few necessities , and were back in the tunnels within an hour .
But as they traversed through the semi darkness, Mordred involuntarily trembled . He felt like a thousand pairs of eyes were watching him . He stopped abruptly . If there was one thing he truly trusted in this world , it was himself .
He held up a hand to stop everyone . "What are you doing ?" Madison asked while everyone shot him questioning looks . Ignoring them , he looked around , at the damp ,dark walls . He strained his ears, trying to pick up any sounds of movement . ." If you're worried about us being followed , i can assure you , i dont sense any minds approaching ."
Mordred could sense the frustration in her voice . The frustration of not being able to read him like she could the others , not to mention that she was claustrophobic . But he still ignored her . The feeling of being watched was as heavy as before . The walls too dark .
Turning to Alexis , light up the tunnel . NOW! " he barked , temporarily slipping back into his old persona . The one that had helped him survive when he was with THEM. When he was an asset .The girl stumbled back , clearly confused and shocked at the steel and scary authority in his voice .
He didn't notice but his eyes were glowing the way they usual did when he was gathering his strength for a massive climate shift. Mark , Alexis boyfriend started forward, but Madison stopped him .
Though she couldn't read his mind , he could see the fear nestled in the glow of his eyes .
She nodded to Alexis who hesitantly rose her right hand . Her fingers caught on fire , illuminating a radius of three feet around her . " More ," Mordred demanded . He could hear sounds now ,faint chittering and scrambling as though something was trying to get away from the light . And it wasn't just one .
From the looks the others gave themselves , they'd heard it too. Alexis rose her hands , her eyes tightening slightly as the tongues of fire erupted. They grew , spreading up her arms up to her shoulders and increasing with intensity . Soon the entire corridor was illuminated ,and what Mordred saw caused his heart to sink . Creatures, if you could even call them that -deformed things made of darkness like silhouettes hung from the tunnel ceiling watching their group with eyeless faces .
