Chapter 1 - I. Strange Encounter

𝗖𝗔𝗠 002 — STORE FRONT

The aisles of the spacious convenience store appeared on the monochromatic camera hidden on the corner, the bright red light making one of the shoppers caught on the sights of the device stare right back at it with uneasiness. While the woman was quite anxious, the young man beside her was completely nonchalant. Strangely, he seemed to not even pull out his hands from his pockets as he walked— his whistling tearing through the audio.

Considering that this was a low-budget camera, it barely caught their hushed conversation. Although it was audible enough to catch the boy's scolding to the other.

"[Y/N]. Stop staring and start distracting the old crone on the counter. I'll start here, quick." The boy swiftly informed, crouching on the dim parts of the aisles; more likely, where the cameras couldn't exactly reach.

"I'm on it, Kyle." She gritted right back, a glare escaping from her eyes.

The woman, now acknowledging her name as [Y/N] nodded, making her way through the counter where a tall middle-aged man stood. He smiled at her with interest, his elbows leaving the marbled tiles of the counter.

"What brings a young lady like you here in such a time?" The man's chapped lips twitched into an even wider smile, taking a quick look on the computer set in front of him; possibly the footage for the cameras.

[Y/N] bit her lip, thinking of a plan that would convince the store owner to take his gaze away from the monitor. She looked back at her accomplice who seems to be stuffing different products and condiments that could fit into the bags they brought as quietly as possible. The boy notices her gaze, shaking his head, he gestured for her to continue to stall. She realizes the message almost immediately, turning back to the now-suspicious store owner and returning his smile.

"Me and my boyfriend's car broke. I was thinking that maybe you could look into it? If it doesn't take much of your time." She spoke through gritted teeth, the lies that kept coming out of her mouth almost making her feel even more restless. As she waited for the man's response, she started to tap her foot to conceal the rustling Kyle made.

The store owner narrowed his eyes, the smile on his face gradually fading, "I'm not much of a mechanic myself. But I guess I could try, with such a pretty face how could I even decline."

CAM 005 — GAS STATION

The woman could only fake a stiff smile, the constantly uncomfortable wording of the old man towards her making her disturbed. As they walked out of the camera's sight, they appeared to another one— this time, there were three of them. A man around his early twenties stepping inside the store without any care, stumbling on some of his steps even.

[Y/N] cursed through the wind, the store owner was indeed distracted after a few sweet words, and faked smiles. But that random man who walked in will surely smash this well-rounded plan into smithereens. She disregarded it, guiding the store owner to the car as she could only hope that her accomplice won't get caught.

And as expected, Kyle walked out of the store with a chaffed look stuck on his face. The large backpack entangled onto his back grew larger, his footsteps making a sound of chips crushing along with bottled drinks hissing. He looked at [Y/N] for a good while, pointing to the store with a stern look.

While the store owner was distracted, he whispered, "Get all the money on the counter, and watch out for that man on aisle three."

As soon as the store owner looked up from the car's engine, the boy feigned a worried frown, quickly opening the car and throwing the bag inside of the car. He approached the store owner, looking back at his accomplice.

"Honey! I'll deal with this. I forgot something inside, go get it for me will you?" The owner puzzlingly peered at the two, his mouth opening to speak— only to be cut off by the woman walking off the scene. Their conversation drowned out as [Y/N] slowly approached the store, the automatic doors sliding open as the cold breeze passed by with a chill through the spine.

Warily, [Y/N] looked around the perimeters as she tried to spot the said man who walked in. Surprisingly, he was nowhere to be seen, not on any of the aisles nor outside. She took the opportunity and rushed to the counter, opening the cash register with quick and shaky hands.

The sound of the paper fortune shuffling on the woman's hands and through her pockets was the only thing that could be heard across the whole store. The night surely deep, the sound of the air conditioning whistling and her heavy breathing blending all together.

"What're you doing?" A stern but tired voice cut in, making [Y/N] back away and lookup within a blink. The man who walked in earlier stood there with a clueless yet carefree stare, casually making his way towards the counter with a lit cigarette in his hand. While on his freehand, two boxes of cigarettes're held along with a lighter.
