Chapter 17 - Chapter 17

Sokka looked at the burning fields and flashed a rare smile. When it was getting hard to breathe, he went back into his tent. Suki draped her arms over his neck and turned him around so he was facing her. She kissed him and whispered "I love you" into his ear before kissing it.

"I love you too." He ignored the pang of regret he felt when he remembered the only reason she loved him was because she didn't know what he had done. If she remembered everything, she would hate him.

Suki shook him from his thoughts when a soldier ran into the tent.

"What the hell are you doing here!?!! This is my private tent. GET OUT!" Sokka yelled at her.

The soldier was gasping for breath but she pointed outside at a figure. It was jumping into the flames.

"Who is that?" Sokka asked the soldier in a quiet voice. Nothing could go wrong today. He had to kill Katara and Zuko. And if he could, the new avatar.

The soldier gulped. "The fire lord."

Sokka growled in frustration and ran out of the tent leaving Suki and the soldier by themselves. When he reached the fields, he sighed in relief. It was still burning. They were dead and sk was the fire lord. Two birds with one stone. He smiled to himself.

"NOOOO!" Someone screamed from the other side of the field.

Sokka immediately looked over, but he could only see a small figure in the distance but it seemed like it was looking at him. He squinted his eyes and that's when he saw a flash of green and then the figure was rushing by towards him. The small figure got larger and larger and he realized it was an earth bender. The figure stopped in front of him.

It was Toph.

(Zuko's POV)

When he saw the flames he immediately shielded himself and Katara and dropped to the ground. He created a shield around them but he knew it wouldn't last. He wasn't strong enough. The only way they could survive this was if Korra and Iroh helped, but they were nowhere in sight.

They crawled as fast as they could but it wasn't fast enough. Zuko was powerful, but not powerful enough to survive the burning fields. Katara tried to help but to put out the fire they needed to be away from it not in the middle of it. She also couldn't focus because of the smoldering heat of the shield.

The fire shield flickered out and Katara got burned before Zuko could put it back up. He knew it was a bad burn but she didn't say anything. Then suddenly it was like half of the pressure was off of him. There was another fire bender there and the shield around them grew making way for more oxygen.

He was so glad that Iroh and the others had found them. Then suddenly someone slipped behind him. He started to turn around to thank his uncle but was soon distracted by the blue fire in front of him. He turned around slowly to see his sister completely focused on bending the fire around them.

She didn't spare him a glance. Katara hadn't noticed yet because she was tending to her wounds. Zuko contemplated killing her right then but if he did that, all three of them would die. Better let her help them and then kill her.

(Toph's POV)

When she finally found her friends after weeks of searching, she was relieved. But that's as before Sokka and his army of mindless minions came in to kill them all. The field in front of her burst into flames, but unluckily for her she didn't know the flames were there until it was close enough for her to feel the heat. She jumped out of the way as soon as she could, but she couldn't see anything and she couldn't go back to save her friends.

She hoped they would get out ok but when five minutes passed and there was still no sign of them, she let out a scream. She bent herself over to the other side of the valley and stopped in front of Sokka.

His heart was beating so fast and she knew he was nervous and afraid. Good. He remembered how powerful she was. Unfortunately for him, she only got more powerful over the years.

"Toph." The first thing she noticed was that his voice was deeper and sharper and lost its childlike charm. She didn't like it.

"You monster."

"You know, I've heard that way too much over the past few days. It's really starting to get annoying."

"HOW COULD YOU DO THAT TO THEM!!??" She yelled in his face but he didn't even flinch. She walked past him and stood in front of his soldiers who were too scared to say or do anything. With her back to him she said "they were our friends. They were our friends and you betrayed them."

"No. They were your friends. And let me refresh your memory. THEY BETRAYED ME FIRST!! Back in Ba Sing Se. All of you went your separate ways and I was left with nothing. I was the one who lost everything while Zuko and my sister were the ones who took everything. Don't you see Toph? They deserved to die. But I don't blame you. You can join me now, and we can avenge our only true friend who, I might add, Zuko killed."

"Zuko didn't kill him, azula did. And if you think for a second that I would join you, then you're crazier than I thought."

Sokka snarled and waved a hand at his soldiers. At once they attacked Toph. She smiled. Finally. It had been too long since she was able to lose herself in a fight.

She cracked her neck and her knuckles and looked around. Her eyes caught on a metal machine. Smiling, she took a stance and ripped off some of the metal and shaped it into a blade. The soldiers stopped and looked at her in dread and confusion.

"Impossible." Sokka looked at her. "Ho-"

"I've learned a few new moves since I've last seen you Sokka."

"Well, what are you waiting for? Attack!" Sokka yelled at his troops. They obediently ran towards her. She was impressed at their persistence and started fighting.

As she cut through the army, her metal blade transformed into whatever weapons she wanted, one time even attaching itself to her arm to shield her from a soldier running headfirst into her. When she got bored of fighting everyone, she planted her self into the earth before stamping the earth with one foot to make an earthquake. Most of the troops fell into the fire with screams but she didn't have time to feel bad about it.

Sokka ran towards her with a blade. She sidestepped him easily but he twisted around in the air and pressed his blade to her throat.

"I've learned some new moves too." Sokka smirked at her, even though she couldn't see him and started leading her to the portable prison.

"Toph?" A small voice rang through the silence.

Suki looked at her and Sokka on horror and put her hand over her mouth when she saw the burning fields. She looked at Sokka with fear in her eyes. Sokka instinctively widened his eyes and tried to explain that it wasn't his fault. He accidentally loosed his grip on Toph and she strutted running. Sokka ran after her but suki stood in front of her while she was getting away. Sokka stopped in front of her.

"Get out out of my way. Please." Sokka said impatiently.

"No. I don't know how I didn't see it before but you're hurting people more than your helping them. I'm going to stop you. If you want to get to her, you'll have to kill me."

Sokka's eyes turned cold and he took the blade from his side. Suki's eyes widened in fear but when he put it away again, she knew he wouldn't kill her, so she relaxed.

She shouldn't have done that. Sokka realized that he couldn't hypnotize her to forget this again and his eyes misted just a little bit before he pushed her over the side into the burning fields.

He turned away from her but she grasped onto the cliff with one hand and tried to pull herself up. Sokka didn't even look at her when he stabbed her hand. Her screams echoed as she fell to her fiery death.

"Let's go." The troops somberly followed him, some looking at the valley, silently mourning the people they had lost that day.
