Dragon King's Harem Chapter 325. Lizard And Dragon IX
"I will be honest with you. I've never heard or known of any of that," Viperax denied, his response as predictable as the suns' rise. I could see through the facade; he likely didn't know but was keen on passing the responsibility elsewhere. The factory might very well be his, and he was adept at playing innocent.
"Including the factory?" I pressed on.
"Yes. I mostly let my loyal subjects handle problems like that. I'm a busy king," he retorted in a nonchalant tone. His eyes locked onto mine, a teasing smirk tugging at his lips. It was a jab at my decade-long hibernation.
My gaze remained fixed on him, unfazed by his attempt to provoke. "The accusations are serious, and the evidence is right in front of you," I reminded him, my tone stern. The holographic images continued to showcase the damning evidence. "Busy or not, as a king, you bear the responsibility for what happens in your kingdom. Ignorance is not an excuse," I stated firmly, my words echoing through the tent. I raised an eyebrow at Viperax's denial.
Viperax shrugged dismissively. "I'm sure there's a misunderstanding. I'll investigate it thoroughly and punish those responsible," he declared, attempting to shift the blame away.
I narrowed my eyes, scrutinizing his reaction. "Your actions will speak louder than words. We need a resolution to this issue that ensures the safety and trust between our tribes," I stated firmly.
Viperax leaned back, a smug smirk playing on his lips. "I delegate such matters to my loyal subjects. Like I said I'm a busy king, unlike some who can afford to spend a decade in slumber," he retorted, aiming a tease at my extended hibernation.
But that didn't trigger me at all. I stayed calm. "I spent ten years of my life sleeping, but I still know this. While you who wake up all the time don't even know this. I wonder if you are blind? You know a blind king is not allowed to keep his throne, right?" I sneered without hesitation.
It annoyed him, but I didn't budge. If he wanted to fight or maybe go to war, I didn't mind. Judging from his attitude, though, it seemed unlikely. Still, I knew how cunning he was. He turned back to his composition and let out a forced chuckle. "You surely got funnier after you woke up from your hibernation, Argod," he said.
I laughed with him too. It was a forced one, just like his. "Really?" I said with a frown. "This is funny since I'm not joking at all," I added with an annoying smile between my chuckles.
"I know. But I will need time to investigate this matter. I have to find out who is responsible for all this and investigate whether everything you said is true or false," he said casually. His hand reached for the drink, and he took a sip. The drink had been tested by one of his wives first to ensure it was free from poison. It appeared natural, as if it were a normal thing, but that simple precaution did not escape my scrutiny.
Viperax's nonchalant response grated on my nerves, but I maintained my composure. "How long can you handle this? Some of the witnesses are my people, and I want them to come back safe," I said in a more serious tone, emphasizing the last sentence. It sounded like a demand.
Viperax's nonchalant attitude persisted, and I could feel my patience wearing thin. "I don't know. This is an investigation. It won't be that easy. Likewise with your people's safety. You can't blame me if they died before I could save them," he reasoned, his tone carrying a dismissive undertone.
I leaned forward, narrowing my eyes. "The factory is under your nose," I reiterated.
He casually pointed at me. "That information, I also need to investigate it. It could be that what you are accused of is wrong. Or maybe my subordinates have already handled it," he said, attempting to deflect responsibility.
"Viperax, this is not the time for bureaucratic delays. Lives are at stake, and the longer you take to act, the greater the risk. If you're truly committed to resolving this, you'll expedite the process and ensure the safety of those witnesses," I urged, my voice firm.
He leaned back, a smirk playing on his lips. "Impatient as ever, Argod. You should learn to savor the intricacies of diplomacy," he remarked, taking another sip of his drink.
"Time is a luxury we can't afford in this matter. The longer it drags on, the deeper the divisions between our tribes grow. I suggest you prioritize swiftly and justly resolving the issues at hand over diplomatic formalities," I countered, my tone unwavering.
Viperax sighed dramatically. "You're quite the persistent one. I'll do what I can, but you can't rush these things. Patience is a virtue," he declared, raising an eyebrow.
'Excuses,' I thought bitterly, my frustration mounting. If only I could voice my inner thoughts. The evidence, after all, spoke louder than words.
"And what about the Wyvern's attack?" I questioned him, keeping my tone steady despite the building tension.
"It was a personal attack. It has nothing to do with me or my tribe. You can't throw the bandits' crimes on one tribe, right? Just catch the criminals, they're all yours. I don't care what you do with them," he replied, the nonchalance in his tone suggesting a blatant disregard for any responsibility.
"I'm talking about the law," I stated firmly.
Viperax leaned back in his chair, an unconcerned expression on his face. "The law is a flexible concept, Argod. What may be a crime in your tribe might not be viewed the same way in mine. We have our own rules and priorities," he asserted, a subtle smirk playing on his lips.
