Chapter 6 - World is saved... Right?

  • Lips pressed together and bodies entangled, Yifei and Jinhae were tired yet so satisfied.

Just like that, they were interrupted by the creaking of an opening door.

"That was certainly fast," the pillow said.

"Well, I would say they were just in time. The resulting blast and hundred meter high waves would have had them dead within a few minutes if they were a bit more late," said the woman nonchalantly.

Yifei jumped away from him, and clutched with full-on panic for a blanket, absolutely clear minded now. She almost asked who and what those visitors were when the events of the past few hours came back to her slightly addled mind.

When she looked at the window, seeing it without a scratch, and more surprised at seeing the sun, still in the process of setting down- she let out a gasp.

"We- We did it?!" she screamed.

When she saw Death's affirmation and the humanlike nod from the pillow, her face glowed as she beamed into a victorious smile.

She had done it! She had saved the world! But she hadn't done it alone.

Turning her head towards the other savior of the world, she was suddenly attacked by an underwhelming sight.

Jinhae was silent, and not a trace of happiness was on his face. It didn't look like he even heard a word the others had said. In fact, he was too lost in thought, his eyes trained with intense focus on his sheets.

    Yifei inched forward. "Jinhae?"

Upon hearing her voice, he flinched, and then finally looked up, taking in the six pair of eyes staring back at him (one a bit more unusual since it was on a pillow).

He shook his head slightly, and then announced, "Great. That's great. Now, I got to go."

And like that, he got up from the bed, fumbling for a bit while looking for his clothes, but when he only came upon his jeans, he shrugged them on, and proceeded to all but run towards the apartment doors, topless and wearing mismatched slippers.

"What?" Yifei said in shock the moment the door closed.

Death tutted on the side. "He doesn't seem overwhelmed with joy about giving his saving grace to your world."

Love added, "Perhaps he wanted the world to end?"

But Yifei wanted none of that. Getting up in a hurry and bundling up the blanket around her like Little Mermaid did upon coming up to shore, she quickly ran after him, bare feet slapping loudly on the marble floors.

"Jinhae!" she shouted after him as she bolted out of the doors and ran across the long corridors. Some neighbors had their doors open, and wide mouthed strangers peeled after her, eyes hungry for gossip.

    'Why's she in a blanket?'

'Did she just scream 'Jinhae'? I knew that boy was indecent!'

'More like, didn't you see the boy's pale face? He was probably raped!'

Inside her own mind, such conversations assaulted her. Their overly curious attention was enough for her to know what they were thinking about. But she didn't care.

"Jinhae!" she screamed after him, even rushing into an occupied elevator, promptly scaring the heck out of an old couple.

She pressed down onto the bottom floor repeatedly enough that the old man reprimanded her gently, "Pressing down more won't make it go faster, young lady."

And she stopped, but her lack of action brought on a wave of frustrated tears.

When the 'ding' from the elevator finally came, and it opened its doors, she walked out of it in a hurry, spinning around to look for his familiar back.

    But he was gone.

And she had just a sliver of pride left not to trudge on barefoot and half naked into the busy streets of Manhattan.

Coming back up into the elevator, where a pizza delivery guy allowed her to come in first alone despite him probably being on a time limit, she collapsed onto the elevator ground, crying into her bare arms.

"He hates me now," she groaned with the painful realization.

After all, if it hadn't been for the end of the world, Yifei knew she would never have had a chance with him.
