Chapter 2 - Prelude

"It's strange how they died, Father was poisoned and Mother was found with her throat slit from ear to ear." Violet said as she gazed at the peasants bearing gifts. "Violet this is not the time nor the place to speck on Mother and Father's untimely death, they deserve more respect then what you are offering." Eudora, the eldest of the three sisters, said softly only so that those who were directly next to her could hear her. The youngest, Alexandra, was the only one amongst her selfish and power hungry sisters who felt sorrow and empathy.

"Thank you for your kindness." She would say to the lower class as they came bearing whatever they could offer. "Ms. Alexandra the High Priest has called for your presence in the royal court." A servant said, bowing greeting the young princess. She smiled softly and followed after the older women.

As she entered the room full of trusted officials, she bowed and asked why was she summoned. "As you know, all of your sisters have been married off and are now queens to there husbands kingdoms. You, on the other hand, are not." The High Priest said as he pulled out a long document with her father's handwriting. "On this document, the king and queen have made a list of eligible husbands." He smiled cheekily as glanced over the list again.

"I'm appointing you a hand-maiden, and she will be with you till death. Please bring the maiden forward." He said rudely gesturing to a servant. The girl they brought forward left the princess in awe, these were such foreign emotions that stirred in the pits of her mind. The girl was rather beautiful to just be a hand maiden, a single strand of hair fell from her neat bun. Her gaped teeth gave her a very original look, compared to every other girl in the kingdom. Unbeknownst to the princess the maiden felt the same.

"This is Ada, my beloved daughter. She was raised to serve the crown and nothing less." He said proudly. "It would be an honor to serve you, princess Alexandra." The way her name fell out of Ada's mouth made her smile unconsciously,  falling deeply for a girl who was cursed to be nothing more than her maiden.

. . . . .

Weeks after the funeral of the king and queen, Alexandra and Ada have become inseparable. Alexandra dreading the fact that she had to choose a husband when her twin flame was in front of her. Ada knew her father would never allow these unholy feelings that continues to grow with each passing moment the girls spend together.

"You look beautiful princess." Ada would say slyly, never to draw attention to the building tension between the two unfortunate lovers. Alexandra was to be dressed for a grand ball where she would meet all of the suiters fit to wear the crown, well according to her father's list. "Thank you Ada. You look stunning yourself." Alexandra would say in response, causing her  youngers cheeks to turn a rosy pink color. Ada's flustered  reaction seemed to satisfy Alexandra, but before Alexandra could take things a step further a servant walked in with a freshly pressed  handmade gown. "Would you like my help putting the dress on princess?" The servant asked placing the dress on a near by chair, being carful not cause any wrinkles in the dress.  "Don't be silly that's why Ada's here." Alexandra exclaimed, dismissing the servant leaving the pair alone once more.

"Ada, what would you say if I confessed that I've developed feelings for you?" The princess asked eagerly awaiting the youngers answer. Ada's heart was filled with some many emotions but one thing she was sure of  was the feeling she developed for the elder.  "I would say that the feeling is mutual and if there were anything to transpire between us... I wouldn't deny you." Ada said as she tightened the straps to Alexandra's corset. The room was filled with a comfortable silence as the younger helped the elder dress. "It's unfortunate that we've meet under these circumstances... I would've gladly taken you as my lover and none of these useless men." Alexandra said sighing sadly at the realization that if she were to love Ada publicly the kingdom would take it as a act against God, and would commit unspeakable acts to the girls. "So let me." Ada said in a small voice. "Let you what?" Alexandra ask already knowing the answer. "Let me be your lover, but in secret." Ada whispered but loud enough for Alexandra to hear. She finished the last button to the dress, resting her hands on Alexandra's hips.

"I fancy you more than I could put in words Ada. I don't mind loving you unconditionally in secret, as long as we always remind each other of who our hearts belong to... each other." Alexandra says now facing Ada, cradling her face in one hand, pulling her closer with the other. Ada nodded her head in yes motion as if she were waiting for those words to escape from Alexandra's lips. For a moment, the existence of time faded into nothingness, as for they were lost in each others eyes. "I need you to promise me something Alexandra." Ada said breaking eye contact, nervously biting down on her bottom lip. "I'll promise you anything." Alexandra said neatly tucking Ada's loose hairs behind her ear. "If anything were to happen to either one or both of us, promise that in our next life we'll find each other... no matter what." Ada knew that she might've sounded childish to the elder but she was raised on fairytales, and in the back of her mind Ada hoped that maybe in her next life she would be able to love Alexandra without fear. Alexandra quietly raised her pinky signifying that she was willing to keep her promise.

The two girls quietly intertwined pinkies, "I promise that I will find you in my next life." Alexandra said just before stealing a small kiss from the younger. Ada was at a lost for words, only to be pulled back in for a deeper and more passionate kiss. Breaking form the kiss both girl yearned for more, but knew that they would have to limit these types of interactions. Alexandra had to go to greet guest soon, so she kissed Ada one last time. "Until I can kiss you again, my forbidden lover." She uttered, pressing her forehead against the youngers, trying to savor the bittersweet moment before swiftly exiting the room leaving Ada in dismay.

Music, cheers, and drunken voices filled the large ballroom. Alexandra watched Ada with diligence as she made her way across the ballroom to stand by her side. She saw how almost every mans eyes turned to those filled with lust, as the girl made her way to her lover. "She's stunning isn't she?" A drunken elder asked, his breath smelled of rotten pumpkin and beer. "My hand maiden is gorgeous." Alexandra said proudly in agreement, holding her hand out to the younger. "I would love to spend the night with her, if you allow me to princess." The elder said, taking both girls by surprise. He hungrily stared at Ada, making her feel every bit of discomfort. "She's not a cheap whore that you do your nauseating deeds with, never ask me such a thing again or our peace treaty is off." Alexandra said in the heat of the moment, neither Alexandra nor the elder were backing down.

"She's a little maiden, she's prized fruit compared to all of these rotten women. Your father would've gladly obliged." He managed to say through his slurred words. He reached his hand out to touch the maiden but failed, Alexandra had called for a guard to escort the drunk out of the castle.

. . . . .

As the festivities begin to simmer down and guest began to leave, Violet noticed a strange clinginess between the two girls but choose not to speak on it. Well that's until she feels as though has solid evidence against the pair.

Alexandra met with all of the young princes that her father had deemed perfect for the thrown, but Alexandra's heart was already settled on Ada. None of the men could win the princess's heart, let alone get a conversation out of her. She tried her best to play her role, but she insisted to the High Priest that she needed more time to choose a man that's suitable for this important position in her kingdom in one night. "I'll give you 2 months to narrow down your options. If you don't choose by then... I will make the decision for you." He said very blandly while pinching the bridge of his nose.

"Thank you, you won't regret it!" Alexandra said happily before making her way back to writing her letter to her forbidden lover.
