Chereads / The Syren Queen / Chapter 2 - Two

Chapter 2 - Two

We were dancing but we never spoke. We held each other but the warmth from our skin no longer felt as comforting as it had. My intuition was almost always right, and I have lived long enough to know when someone wasn't being truthful.

But it still hurt. With a final spin, he kissed my hand as he bid me goodnight, but I watched him as his demeanor changed, and as he made his way to someone all too familiar. I bit my tongue knowing that I couldn't do something I'll regret as I looked away from him talking up a lady in waiting. Maybe he figured I had escaped to the wine table, maybe be believed I was chatting with family and that I didn't notice how his eyes lit up at the sight of a prettier more fishlike, female. I just stared unable to move as I watched the female pull her hair over her shoulder as she grabbed his arm. I felt a hand on my shoulder then and it took everything in me to look away from the man that I loved flirting with another woman. Delmare stared down at me, his golden eyes searching mine, his skin an ashen gray while his hair and tail matched the color of my hair.

"Are you okay Seda?" He inquired, his voice gruff and full of worry. At only 430, he was barely eight years older than I but still felt it was his duty to care for me as if I was still the little guppy he met all those years ago. We all had our mother's eyes, a soft golden light but I was given her blue skin and hair. Sometimes I saw myself in her and I wished I could be good like my mother.

I shook my head, "No, I think Kai is cheating on me."

I felt my heartbreak as I said it, years of being together wasted. I thought he was the one, I believed he was my soulmate.

"That asshole." Delmare cursed, feeling his fury radiating off of him like the tide, "I'll teach him a lesson!"

"Denny, no!" I pleaded, using my childhood nickname for him for good measure, "I don't have proof."

"Sedna, you know the law on infidelity."

I clenched my jaw, "I know but Denny, we aren't married it doesn't apply here, not until I have proof! I don't want to cause a scene!" I pleaded but he was already storming over to Kai before I could stop him.

And just as he was going to confront him, Semarah with her blonde hair and bright green eyes arrived, placing her hand in front of the enraged merman. Swimming past my brother and sister-in-law, I left the ballroom, feeling exhausted from tonight's festivities. But as I passed a room, what I saw made me snap. My baby sister was half-naked with my now soon to be ex on top of her. I snapped, throwing open the door with a loud bang making the couple jump with surprise.

"Seda, what are you doing here?" He asked his eyes filled with surprise as he never made a move to remove himself from my sister.

I was livid now, infuriated that he would have the gall after being together for ten years to sleep with other women while he was with me. He would not get away with this. I felt the anger well up inside of me, so much anger and heartbreak that I could barely control it as I spoke.

"What the hell do you think you're doing Kai?"

He was off of Avisa in a second, but she never moved, still laid there half-naked an if she just wanted to see how I would react.

"I'm sorry I didn't mean it I-" He paused, his mind frantic as he looked from me to my sister and then back again, "Please, believe me, Seda I messed up. She means nothing to me. We didn't even have sex! Well I mean, there was that one time-"

And then he moved towards me as if he thought that if he touched me it would calm me down enough to not overreact. But it didn't help, in fact, it made it worse. "Kai of the kingdom of Arcadia, do you know the laws of which that have been written against infidelity?" I asked, my eyes not leaving his as my powerful voice rang towards him making him flinch. By now, I was glowing so overcome with my emotions and magic that I didn't realize what was happening until it was too late. "The punishment for the offense against a royal is death."

And in an instant the dark tendrils of my power consumed me, as they went through his body, flooding the water around him in a thick amount of his silver blood, killing him instantly. Avisa screamed, swimming towards Kai's lifeless body as I turned away from my traitorous sister and left her without another word.

Swimming away from the room, I made my way into my own room and slammed the door behind me. My hands shaking as I tried to control my magic before it could consume me again. The last time I used them was a hundred years ago and I wished I'd never had to use them again. "Sedna, what the hell did you just do!"

Burying my face in my hands, I couldn't control my emotions as I sobbed, my tears being taken away by the current as I laid on the bed, my face in my pillow as I tried to process all that has happened since coming to my brother's kingdom. I just murdered the merman I have been with for the past ten years. I murdered him without a trial. I felt my heartbeat quicken as I heard a knock on my door, sitting up in bed, I hoped it wasn't an angry mob coming to take me away. But it was worse, it was all three of my older brothers. And they were all pissed.
