Chereads / Arthur / Chapter 2 - The Beginning

Chapter 2 - The Beginning

Ten Years Later.

Sitting before a large lake in an unknown space, a bronze-skinned, white-haired old man in a white robe continuously stroked his long beard as though he was waiting for something. Behind him, a silvery tiger paced back and forth impatiently, also seemingly waiting for something.

A few minutes later, as though rewarding their patience, ripples began to appear on the surface of the lake.

"About time, I thought I would be here until these old bones of mine turned to dust," murmured the Old Man as he stood up and stretched his waist.

With a low growl, the silvery tiger approached the lake's shore staring into its waters.

As both man and beast watched on, the ripples on the lake's surface began to rapidly grow in size and intensity until they started to form meter tall waves.

Interestingly, as the waves neared the area where the Old Man and tiger stood, they immediately died down.

"Bout time…"

WHOOSH!

Abruptly the surface of the lake broke in a giant splash as a golden-haired youth with a streak of white in it leaped out as though he was running from something. He was handsome, to say the least, and his bare upper body did little to hide his incredible physique.

Dangling around his neck was a beautiful ring bound to a necklace that easily drew one's attention. To the left of his chest where a strange mark akin to that of a fang was tattooed. He looked good.

Regardless, the youth's current appearance was the least of his worries.

A few moments later, a massive red serpent leaped out of the lake's center, opening its large mouth as it prepared to swallow the youth whole.

On the shore of the lake, an excited look flashed in the Old Man's silver eyes as he began to rub his hands together. "Excellent job, Arthur. I thought I would go insane from my craving!"

Flashing a toothy grin, the Old Man snapped his fingers as a white halo ring suddenly appeared around the neck of the snake.

SHING!

In a blink of an eye, the halo shrunk, and the snake's head separated from its body.

Due to the sudden loss of its head, the serpent's body lost all momentum and began to fall.

However, during the brief moment of its decapitation and descent, gushes of blood spurted from the serpent's arteries painting the surroundings in a vermillion red.

Landing next to the old man, Arthur, now covered in blood, threw the old man a disapproving gaze.

Shrugging off Arthur's gaze, the old man took a step forward, and with a 'come here' motion, the corpse of the red snake floated towards him, all the while murmuring under his breath. "Dunno what he's so mad about? Does he know how long it took me to perfect this fishing technique.."

Arthur, already used to the Old Man's antics, thought nothing of his words as he stretched his arms outward. Almost instantly, a viscous black liquid began to wrap his bare upper body. Taking a few seconds, the liquid began to harden until a full-sleeved leather armor sat in its place.

Suddenly seeming to remember something, Arthur began to turn around in circles." Oh, crap! Where is Caliburnus?"

"Language, Arthur!"

"Sorry."

As though responding to Arthur's call, a slight movement appeared in the severed snake's body.

However, due to the slight movement, the serpent's decapitated body squirted another round of blood as a small cuboid made of smaller cubes floated out of an artery.

The cuboid, after stabilizing itself, released a little burst of energy, cleaning itself of the blood. After a few quick movements of its smaller cubes, a small dark sphere appeared at the cuboid center along with a soft blue diamond-shaped light.*

[*Rare Interruption, but it's honestly best if you imagine Caliburnus' cube form as a Ghost Shell from Destiny.]

"Cal, I-!" Started Arthur.

"You-! You left me!" Came a slightly monotonous but childish voice as the cuboid spoke.

"What? No, I didn't. I thought you were right behind the whole time."

With a roll of its eye, Cal turned away from Arthur.

"Aw, come on, Cal, don't be like that. If anything, it's gramps fault."

"Don't drag me into this. I'm innocent, and take responsibility," Retorted the old man as he slowly condensed all of the serpent's blood into a small orb.

Walking to face Caliburnus, Arthur cupped him in his hands and flashed a warm smile," I am sorry, Cal, I promise I will never abandon you again."

Hearing Arthur's words, Cal's blue diamond grew a bit brighter," promise?"

"Promise!"

Hearing Excalibur and Arthur's talk, the silvery tiger that had been staring fixedly at the red bead the old man was forming came over and patted Arthur's foot.

Laughing at the tiger's antics, Arthur also promised. "I promise to never abandon you either, Aegon."

Seemingly finished extracting the serpent's blood, the old man spoke. "All right now that everyone is friends again; let's have lunch."

As the Old Man's words ended, the vast body of the serpent immediately split into large sections.

Following his words with a snap of his fingers, the smell of roasted meat immediately to permeate the area.

Snapping again, a small ball of energy shot towards Caliburnus while the blood orb shot towards Aegon's open mouth.

Receiving the orb with satisfaction, Aegon closed his eyes as he began to savor the blood orb.

Looking at Aegon's contented look, the old man nodded his head. 'He should be evolving soon.'

Wasting no time, Arthur stretched out a hand, grabbed a large section of the roasted serpent, and began to take mouthfuls.

Watching Arthur virtually breathe in the food, the Old Man smiled as a hint of sadness danced in his eyes. With a sigh, he spoke," Say, Art, why do you want to become a Sovereign?"

Hearing the Old Man's question, Arthur paused.

Thinking for a bit, Arthur replied. "Everything I've learned about the world speaks only of depravity, war, death, famine, and destruction. Whenever or wherever there seems to be a semblance of peace, it is always cruelly crushed. But it shouldn't have to be this way. I simply want to bring together a world that's hell-bent on tearing itself apart, and I….."

"…. And I want to create a world where what happened to my parents won't happen to someone else."

Smiling at Arthur's words, the old man replied. "The path to peace is one filled with chaos. Won't your story repeat itself with someone else?"

"I am aware, but sacrifices must be made to gain something. Won't it be worth it if the sacrifices created a world where such sacrifices won't ever be made again?"

Taking a big bite out of food, the Old Man chuckled. "Well, I suppose. After all, we all have something we fight for, to the point that we are willing to die for it; and we will do whatever it takes to attain it….It will be hard, ya know."

Inhaling a section of his meat, Arthur smiled. "I know. But nothing worth having comes easy."

"Wise words." Chuckled the Old Man. "It seems you are ready."

"Am I ready?"

The old man smiled as a white halo appeared around his silver pupils," lets finishing eating first, and we will find out."
