Chereads / Catching Sakura / Chapter 14 - Chapter 14

Chapter 14 - Chapter 14

Candace White was now her sworn enemy. She had to be the biggest traitor in the world, second only to Judas. There was nothing that would convince Sakura otherwise. The woman was practically skipping towards their destination, not minding the brooding female that lagged behind her.

"If you glare at me any more than that Sak, your eyes are going to come out of their sockets." Her heated glare focused on the bouncy locks of hair of Candace's head and she rolled it into the air as the blonde threw a wide grin her way. "Chin up. You look so pretty tonight!"

She didn't feel pretty. Tired, irritated, hungry and a list of other things was what she felt but pretty was not on the list. Sakura could clearly see the signs of smoke in the air, the orange light from the fire bright in the darkness of the night. They had decided to walk the 20 minutes' walk from their cabin to the wide and open space that the bonfire would be holding. Candace had suggested it would cool Sakura down. It wasn't until she stepped outside that she realized that the air was not the least bit chilled, but very humid. It only annoyed her more that she was being coerced into going for this when she could be cuddled up in an air-conditioned room with her new toys.

The fallen leaves crunched under her feet as they walked through the trees. The Robinson land went on for acres and the only animals she occasionally saw were deer and squirrels. It was quiet and was a sanctuary for the wildlife that owned the land before man moved in. She could hear the loud laughter and bubbling enjoyment of men. Looking up, she saw the clearing ahead and Candace squealed in delight as she grabbed a hold of her arm. She was literally pulled and watched the orange light become more visible. The big fire danced into the sky, following the wind in a sensual form. Many people were scattered around, all workers from the orchard. She even caught sight of some that she hardly saw. They must have really been excited to come out tonight the way they did.

"Candy!" she heard a loud voice shout

Sakura's eyes turned to the side as they both stopped walking. A muscular man that she knew as Boris came forward holding two bottles of beer. His shirt was untucked from his jeans and the baseball cap he sported was worn backwards.

"Bo!" Candace said, obviously excited. Sakura pulled her arm away gently as they met halfway

"I knew it was you. How you doing tonight beautiful?" he asked, "Mind a beer?"

"You flatter me too much Boris." Candace said, her voice drenched in so much seduction that Sakura had to resist the urge to barf "And don't mind if I do. An excuse to get drunk is always welcome."

She gradually drifted away from them, not wanting to be caught in the middle of their flirting. Candace had always been the life of the party and the very one most people preferred. It was mostly because Sakura never allowed herself to be open with most of the workers and she wouldn't be surprised if they had nicknamed her 'Ice-Queen'. Not like she minded. She really enjoyed not being approachable. Being approachable meant attracting things she didn't want.

Cautiously looking around, she walked towards the table of refreshments. There was a barbecue as planned, with more meat than she had seen in a long time. The smell of the smoky pork rang through her senses and coaxed her to come have a taste, but she was more concerned with not being seen. Especially since the whole reason the bonfire was happening tonight was also the person, she was trying her best to avoid.

She tried her very best to forget how it felt like when he held her. It was a perfect fit, but then again, she had already felt that way about someone before and that had ended up blowing up in her face. Sakura had no idea why Cyrus was acting the way he was and she didn't want to try and understand. All she wanted was for him to disappear. It would take away the anxiety he had started to make her feel from that morning. It would hopefully also take away the flutters in her stomach.

Not standing out. That was the basis of her plan. That was going to be a problem considering what Candace had done to her. The only thing she could never go up against was a determined Candace White and because Sakura was so stubborn, the blonde would resort to emotional blackmail; going as far as crying. Sakura really hated it when women cried. She had seen it enough when growing up as her mother cried to get whatever she wanted from her father and her brothers. With her, all her mother had to do was rage to get what she wanted, but the older Sakura had gotten, the more she had resorted to crying for her daughter as well. As much as she knew it was only pretence, it didn't stop her from giving in. She was that weak.

It was for that sole reason that Candace had been able to squeeze her into the tightest jeans she owned and a top fluttered over the top of her belly button. Her hair was unbound, the scattered curls going down her shoulders. The only thing Candace had let her stay with was her glasses. After she had gotten dressed, her friend had proceeded to rain praises on her about how wonderful she looked. Uncomfortable was the word in her opinion. She felt uncomfortable and she wondered if she would be able to sit down with how tight they were.

"Is that who I think it is?" on, not today. She didn't want to have to deal with this today "You look stunning Sakura."

April. Sakura had almost forgotten about the woman. Her eyes met April's through her frames and she forced a quick smile to her face. "Good evening April."

"I'd recognize that messy bedhead anywhere." She came forward, taking a cup from the stack on the table, right by Sakura's arm "It's been long we've had a conversation, hadn't it? How have you been?"

"Yes, it has. I've been good." Maybe if she didn't ask questions back, April would be forced to go away.

"I've been good myself yknow. Keeping busy with the boys and my business." Sakura didn't miss the subtle flash of the diamond ring that sat on her slender finger "You still holing up with your computers?"

"As I'm being paid to, yes."

The only thing that annoyed Sakura about April was how sickly sweet the woman was. So sweet it was fake. Sakura saw right through it when they met. There was nothing kind about April Robinson but she knew Wallace was head over heels and it wasn't her business to even disturb herself with family issues of her employers. All she wanted was to avoid the woman as much as possible so they wouldn't end up having trouble. So far, the past few months, she had been doing a good job and it helped that April was usually busy with her restaurant.

Her laughter rang through the air and Sakura saw from the corner of her eyes as a few heads turned their way. She was always the centre of attention and made sure it stayed that way. Not like she would have any problem with it, considering how naturally pretty she was. Even now, the fire illuminated her figure and possibly tickled the imaginations of those around them. She wore a short wrap dress that hugged her body, the bottom part flowing with the wind and exposing more of her milky thighs.

"You've always been so comical!" the exaggeration in April's voice made her want to roll her eyes "That reminds me, Wallie was telling me something really funny tonight, about you and Cyrus, oh you may know him as Mr Axton. Is it true you guys are a thing?"

A thing? She would have burst out laughing if not for the seriousness she saw in April's eyes. It wasn't any of her business what was happening. It was preferable to not reveal anything to her than to reveal a little to her. She didn't know when to stop digging for information. If Sakura gave her a centimetre, April would take it a mile long.

Before she could respond, however, another voice chimed in from behind her, freezing her in place. "That's for us to know April and for you not to find out."
