"Because I care about you!"
And his words echoed in the vast nothingness around her, reverberating against her very soul, and she couldn't help but stare back at him as if those five words were unfathomable.
"You, what?"
Gulping his spit, he looked sideways and closed his eyes for a moment. "Because I care about you, doctor."
Her lips parted, hearing him repeat those words. Words that strangely comforted her. And not knowing why, she took a step closer, wanting to feel the warmth of his proximity. But all of a sudden, he took a step back. A small step, a couple of inches, but Caroline could feel a distance of miles in between when he started to speak.
"Because even without powers, you work hard every single day to heal people. Without fail. You are a healer too, and this world needs healers like you. So no matter what, I am going to protect you, everyone like you."
Her brows furrowed for a second as her hopes came crashing down.
