"I mean, honestly, who does she think she is?" Meghan whined. "Tasha, you
and me are the most popular kids in that hell-hole – like I couldn't completely
ruin her if she laid a finger on my guy."
Absent-minded – I nodded, as she droned on, eyes running along my text
conversation with Holly from the night before.
"Sunshine!" She snapped. And I knew she'd been trying to read it. "What is
that? Weren't you even listening to me?"
I pushed my phone deep into my back pocket, turning to face her.
"Of course."
...
Hurrying to keep up, I followed Meghan and into the girl's bathroom at the
end of first period – fearful for whatever drama they'd create next.
"Bitch!" Tasha scowled as she pushed open the door, her straight, black hair
catching on her leather jacket. "We know you're in here."
A tall, skinny girl with a long, mahogany plait, was stood in the corner, beaming
uncontrollably at her mobile.
I recognised her instantly.
Holly Parker.
She dropped her phone to her side and I saw
I bit my lip.
Knowing I was already so sorry.
"Parker!" Meghan yelled as her and Tasha stormed to lock her in the corner –
an animal in a battery farm.
Holly smiled sweetly, faking a sweet, childish tone; "Good morning, my finest
piers, what can I do for you?"
"Don't play dumb with me." Meg hissed beneath her breath. "I saw you with
Tom today – flirting. He's my boyfriend not yours... So stay the hell away from
him."
"That's crazy!" Holly blurted laughing uncontrollably. "I'm gay! Everybody
knows that."
Meg tilted her head – dangerously – eyes slanted... And I knew what was
coming next.
"Then leave him alone, you slutty bit-"
"Shut up!" I screamed, angrily. The loudest I'd ever been. "Shut the hell up!"
I pushed past Meg, reaching for Holly's hand, pulling her into my arms.
Both girls stared at me – unblinking.
Stunned to silence."Sunshine." Meg began, a fierce spite burning in her eyes.
"No." I swallowed, bitterly. "She's my girlfriend - I won't let you harm her."
"Girlfriend?" Meg spat, mockingly. "What kind of disgusting life have you been
leading, Sun?"
Holly squeezed my hand softly – a plea not to answer. And I watched in silence,
as she took the lead: Flushing the taps of icy water as she spoke; "Disgusting?
There are many things that are disgusting... Mud, snakes, blood, garbage... But
never love."
Meg folded her arms indignantly.
"But based on everything I know about the two of you." Holly continued,
beaming. "The most disgusting thing to you is a girl with completely ruined hair
and makeup." And hurriedly, she forced the empty bottle of soap into the cold
water and into their faces – soaking them from head to toe as they screeched
in shock."
"Charlotte Sunshine!" Meghan screamed. "Such bad manners!
And with that, she stormed from the otherwise empty bathroom; Tasha
chasing at her heel.
I turned, thankfully to Holly, giggling. "That was amazing."
She blushed. "Because you're amazing!"
