"Kayden? Kayden, can you hear me?"
Kayden's eyes flickered for a moment before fully opening. There was a stabbing pain in his back. He looked over at a doctor who was saying something that Kayden couldn't quite make out. His ears kept ringing, the light was extra bright.
He sat forward but a searing pain jolted up his spine, preventing him from moving any further. The doctor insisted he stay put. "Hello? Mr. Furlong are you with me? My name is Doctor Emmett, you are at Kuja Regional Hospital. You were shot last night and fell unconscious, we need to run some tests to see how severe the damage was. How many fingers am I holding up sir?" Kayden focused on the doctor's fingers, he saw maybe 3 or 6 he couldn't tell and so he took a wild guess, "5." The doctor didn't say anything he just lifted up the bottom half of his blanket exposing his feet. "Can you wiggle your toes for me please...left...right...very good. The doctor scribbled in his pad and continued "We got a call from one of your neighbors saying that there was a man dying in the street. Luckily for you, I think we have managed to halt most of the damage...however, there was damage to the Lumbar region of your spinal cord. And so we believe that there is a chance you will never be able to walk again. But please don't be alarmed, nothing is final. There's still a chance we can turn this around for you. You just need to rest up. One more thing, the police have been notified and will be in to question you within the next couple of hours. You need to be honest with them-" "Fuck that. Don't get the cops involved alright...It was just some mugger in the street he took most of my money and left me for dead. Even if I knew who it was I wouldn't be able to tell you. That's with god almighty as my witness." The doctor didn't give Kayden any legroom. "The police have already been notified, I suggest you rest up and relax." "You don't understand, I've gotta get home. My dog...my dog's home alone no one's been feeding him. I have no one in this city to turn to I need to get back home or hell die."
"We can arrange for a service to take care of that for you Mr. Furlong." Kayden began to wheeze as his heart rate began to climb. He grabbed the doctor by the collar and yanked him close, "You let me the fuck outta here or you'll be in for a world of pain Doc!" the doctor ripped Kaydens handoff of himself and straightened up his shirt, "If I let you go right now, you'd be dead by tomorrow. Or At the very least be paralyzed forever. Calm down and wait for the questioning and the operation." Kayden sunk into the doctor's bed, as his heart began to pulse even more so frequently. The doctor made his leave and he was stuck bedridden in a silent ward. He looked over out the window and noticed a wheelchair. 'Perhaps...' he thought to himself as he looked back over his shoulder checking that he was indeed alone.
