DEVON
"No freaking way!" Karla gasped when I told her everything that had happened.
"I'm serious" I said, bringing my glass of lemonade to my lips. "Wow. I will like to meet him. He saved your life" she said, grinning.
"Yeah"
"It's hard to believe that you were nearly killed by a demon but I believe you. Heck, I now believe that supernatural things actually exist. That's awesome"
My mum stepped out into the porch where Karla and I were having a conversation.
"I see you girls are having a nice time" she said, smiling.
"Yeah" Karla said.
"That's good. Devon, I think you should get ready"
"For?" I asked.
"Your dad's business associate is visiting with his family, sweetie. They'll be coming over in an hour"
"Oh, right"
Karla smiled.
"I guess it's my cue to leave" she said. "No, honey. If you want to stay, you can-"
"Actually, I promised my mum I'll come home early"
"Alright, sweetie. Extend my greetings to your mum"
Karla nodded and embraced me before leaving. I went upstairs and took a shower. I got dressed in a blue dress that ended just above my knees. I made my hair into a ponytail and put on my necklace.
"Devon! They're here" my mum said, poking her head in. "Okay, mum" I replied.
I came downstairs and greeted my dad's business associate, politely.
We all sat down and my dad smiled at me.
"Is this your daughter?" Mr Davis, my dad's business associate asked.
"Of course" my dad replied with a proud look on his face. "She's gorgeous"
"Thank you" I replied and found myself staring at Mr Davis' son who was sitting not far from his father. He looked to be a few years older than me. He was good-looking, I'll give him that. He had brown hair and startling hazel eyes. It suited him though. The second son was just as goodlooking but he had brown hair and blue eyes. "What's your name, beautiful?" His dad said to me. "Devon" I replied.
"My, my, you have such a lovely daughter, William" Mrs Davis said to my dad.
"This is my son, Casper" she said, placing a hand on her first son's arm. He forced out a smile, his gaze still resting on me.
"I'm Ace. Nice to meet you" the blue eyed boy said with a smile on his face.
"Nice to meet you too" I replied, feeling unnerved by the stare his brother was giving me.
My parents began to chat with their parents and I sort of zoned out.
Theo.
He had taken over my mind.
He was in my dreams.
He was in my head.
I couldn't help it.
".... be nice to see our children getting married"
That sentence snapped me out of my thoughts.
"W-what?" I gasped.
Everyone's gaze was rested on me and my dad seemed displeased with my little display of surprise.
"Didn't you know?" Mrs Davis said, looking concerned
"Know what?"
"You'll be getting married to Casper after college" Mum said and I froze, my gaze meeting Casper's emotionless ones.
I wanted to scream but all I could do was stare.
"N-no....Mum, you just can't do that. Dad... what's-"
Unable to bear the silence, I stormed out of the dinning room and ran upstairs. I locked my room and sank to the ground.
I barely knew him.
Why me?
There was a deep ache in my heart when I thought of Theo. I felt like I was betraying him. I squeezed my eyes shut. I was heartbroken.
....
THEO
I let out a sigh, leaning on the window sill as I stared at empty space. Lucian's words kept ringing in my head over and over again. I couldn't help but feel puzzled.
The only person who knew my secret apart from Lucian was Matthias, my other friend who'd died a few years back. No one else knows what I am. Not even my adoptive mother who'd taken Luke and I as her sons, knew that I was royalty.
Flashback
The heavy fog and smoke hanging on the air made it difficult to see anything. Six years old Theo and his friends were struggling to their feet, unsteadily. There had just been a coup in the throne room of Theo's father, the king of the four lands of the fairies. The king and his queen lay on the cold floor, life slowly leaving their bodies.
"Father!" Theo cried and stumbled to his father's side, ignoring the bleeding wound on his shoulder.
"T-Theo.... you have to go..... Go to the human world. He can't find you there" the king gasped. "No, father. I can't leave you here to die"
"Lucian, my boy.... take Theo with you" King Eros said to his son's bestfriend.
"Your father is gone, my boy. He fought bravely to defend his loyalty"
Tears filled Lucian's eyes.
"Matthias, you must go with them too. The three of you will be safe in the human world"
The king stumbled to his feet and with the last of his energy, he opened a portal leading to the human world.
"Now, go"
Lucian pulled Theo to his feet. "You think you're smart enough? You think I'll spare your son too?" A cold voice belonging to Theo's uncle echoed in the throne room as he emerged from the fog with a silver sword in his grip. "Go, now!" The king cried and they all jumped into the portal. A silver dagger came hurtling towards them. Just before they disappeared from sight, the dagger struck Matthias on the back of the neck.
The portal closed and the three boys landed on wet grass, Matthias was dead.
With tears in their eyes, they watched his body fade into nothing. Meanwhile, Theo was still bleeding heavily from the wound on his shoulder. "Come on, Theo. We have to get help.... You're hurt pretty bad" Lucian said and Theo stumbled to his feet, dizzy from the huge amount of blood he'd lost.
They began to walk down the unfamiliar streets. The longer they walked, the weaker Theo became. His white tunic was rapidly turning red. It was late at night and a few people were moving along the streets.
Theo passed out, unable to move on any longer. Lucian knelt beside him, worried.
Just then, Rachel, a widow at age 30, stopped her car a few feet away from them.
"Help, please. He's hurt" Lucian said to the woman who took pity on him and his unconscious friend. She got out of the car and carried Theo in her arms while Lucian trailed behind her. She was going to help them and she did....
****End of flashback****
I heard Rachel, my adoptive mother, drive in. I still didn't move from where I was. I could hear Lucian talking to her in the sitting room. I zoned out once again, trying to figure out how my secret might've slipped. The more I thought of it, the more confused I became. I closed my eyes when Rachel placed a hand on my shoulder.
"Theo, what's wrong? You're very tense" my mum said to me, sounding very worried. I sighed, shaking my head. "It's nothing" I muttered, opening my eyes.
"Nothing? Come on, honey. I've known you for more than ten years. I know that you're lying to me" she said, her hand lingering on my shoulder. I slowly turned to face her, wondering if I could tell her. Rachel was one of the people I trusted with my life. She has been so wonderful to me despite the fact that I'm not human. She's always treated me like her own son. She brushed my hair out of my eyes. "You know you can tell me anything, Theo" she said. I closed my eyes briefly, taking a deep breath.
"I didn't tell you everything about myself" I said but she didn't look surprised.
"It's understandable, Theo. It's okay to keep your secrets to yourself if you have to" she said, gazing into my golden eyes steadily.
Usually, a human cannot make full eye contact with me; especially since my golden eyes seems to glow at all times. But Rachel is one of a kind. She's also one of the gifted humans who can see through glamors.
"Is this about your supernatural origin?" She asked. "Yes. I think we should sit down" I said and she sat down on my bed. I followed suit.
"Remember I told you I had to leave the underworld because my father had been attacked. I never told you why he was attacked"
Rachel nodded, holding my hand. "My father was the king of the faeries.... and that makes me his heir"
Rachel looked pleased.
"Well, you look and act like royalty. I just didn't think about it" she said and I gave her a smile.
"But, I have a feeling that it's not all-" she said.
"You're right. My father was dethroned by his brother and I had to escape with Lucian. It was necessary for me to hide my status because there are other creatures here on Earth that would quickly gang up to eliminate me. My uncle might have spies here on earth. But still, I couldn't stay idle.... I was still so young and had barely developed my powers. If people like us go to earth with such under developed powers, our bodies would weaken and we would die. But then, Luke and I found a group of supernaturals here on earth, they were called guardians. I didn't tell them who I am but they took me anyway. I'm actually half human, my mum is a human. She abandoned me because she thought of me as a monster....an abomination"
"Oh, dear" Rachel said, squeezing my hand gently.
"The earth guardians mainly consist of half-bloods, that's why Lucian and I got in. We became night walkers, meaning our job is mainly carried out at night"
"So that's why you guys leave every night" she said.
"Lucian told me about your soulmate and how you almost lost her today. Are you okay?" She asked.
I gave her a smile.
"I'm fine" I replied.
"Luke told me that he wants to start going to high school to keep an eye out for her. I've agreed to it" she said.
"Thanks, mum" I said and she rose to her feet, pressing a kiss to my cheek.
"You should come downstairs for dinner" she said and left my room.
I closed my eyes, trying to reach Devon. My eyes widened when I felt her despair and frustration.
I made a mental note to see her after dinner.
