"Dad I'm home!" I shouted as I walked through the front door. I was met with my father crying as he stared as he dampened our family photo with tears. Ever since mom died, he was rendered to a mere shell of himself. He used to be a famous hero but now he just remains inside our house. The last photo he had of my mom had tears and tear circles in it. The emotionless look he had in his eyes as if his soul left his body almost brought a tear to my eyes. "You should quit while you're ahead. The work of a hero just brings pain to your life." he stated before heading to his bedroom.
I decided on my fifth birthday after mom died that I would become a hero so that my father's spirits could be restored. Unfortunately, I was born without a power of my own. Despite this, I trained my body relentlessly to make up for such a disadvantage. No matter what it took I knew in my heart that I needed to become a hero. My mother's legacy would die if I didn't do so. She became a top-tier hero so she could protect all that she cared about. That included her family. We were her treasure and she would give her life to protect us and that's what she did.
My father had been ambushed on a mission and she was called in for backup. She got stabbed in the heart as she dove in and took the stab for my father. She died bleeding out in my father's arms and that broke my father. Each day while I go to school, he visited her grave and fell to his knees as he cried out asking for forgiveness and thanking her for saving his life. I can't bear looking at my father suffer any longer. "I swear to you dad. I will become the number one hero and be a great hero for your sake. I will continue both your legacy and mom's" five-year-old me shouted at the top of my lungs.
All I had was my ambitions since I gained no power. I was ridiculed, teased and beaten up for my dreams. Students made fun of me and picked on me each day. If I fought back a gang of them would fight me at once and injure me. I only had one friend that helped me train and because of her, I learned to defend myself without a power. I owed a lot to her and I swore that I wouldn't let her efforts be in vain. Her brother was the strongest of our school. He was able to emit lightning from his body and with that ability, he became the king of our school.
"Maybe we should call it a day Kankuro. You're really improving and you almost beat me. I'm impressed at your progress." "I wouldn't be this strong without your help, Emily." We sat down and gazed at the beautiful orange clouds that came out at sunset. "Why do you want to be a hero so badly." "Both of my parents were heroes. Many people have respect for them. Sadly, my mom died in her line of work and my dad is shaken up about it up to this date. Despite I might be powerless I aspire to be the number one hero so I can uphold both of their legacies." "So honorable."
Abruptly lightning struck a tree and it was about to land on Emily. It happened so fast that Emily couldn't move out the way. I tried to reach out to her and soon my hand was glowing as the tree floated in the air above her." I couldn't believe my eyes. She left from under the tree and I then let it drop. After all these years of strife, I finally gained a power of my own. I was so elated that tears of joy rolled down my face as Emily thanked me for saving her life. I was so happy to have the power to call my own. I almost danced out of joy for I was one step closer to becoming the greatest hero.
It grew dark outside so I left Emily and rushed home. On the way, I tested out my ability and realized I could use it to run faster so in no time at all. "Dad the coolest thing happened to me today. I have a power now. I'm a psychic just like you. Wait since we have similar powers can we train together?" "No, I threw away my title as hero years ago. It's too late for me Kankuro. If it weren't for my weakness she would still be here. If I wasn't so incompetent your mother would still be here! I'm the one to blame." He fell to his knees and cried.
"If mom was still here she'd be wondering where was the courageous man she married and had a child with. You think mom can rest in peace with all your crying and complaining. You think I don't miss her but I'm not acting like you because I will respect her sacrifice. She chose to give up her life so you can live dad so think. Do you want her last wish to be in vain?" He stood up and hugged me. "I'm your parent but yet you give me strength. Fine, I'll return to being a hero and train you when I have the time to do so." I returned the hug as I cried while being happy to see my dad like his former self.
The next day at school was different. With my powers and physique, I was able to teach the students a lesson. I practiced using my power against Emily at lunch. It was so fun to have a power to use and soon my training gained the attention of Blake, Emily's brother. "I've heard you have a power of your own and now you think you're such a badass now huh. I'm here to put you in your place." Lightning emitted from all over his body as he stared me down. I gulped and went into a fighting stance. I was nervous since he is the strongest in the school so I began to shiver as an epic battle would soon start.
