The door opening is what made me conscious, a knife to my throat was what made me wake up. It had been two weeks since I last saw Scarlet. She had been awake and gone by the time I woke up and she had kept herself busy to avoid me. My job was to endlessly train the angels, even I learned a few new things from them, but I had yet to see the leader. I made sure to keep my breath even, pretending to sleep, even when I heard a familiar growl, Conner's growl.
"I know you're awake, angels are super sensitive to human's vitals," he hissed. Within two precise moves, I had the knife knocked out of his hand and pinned him against my bed.
"What, exactly, do you think you're doing?" My grin was wide with the knowledge that I had just disarmed a general of an angel army. Then worry made me frown if I could beat these angels as a mere human then they didn't have a chance.
"You slept with my girl!" He blasted me with magic that had blown me out of my room and into the hallway. My hunting knives slipped into my hands and I went into a fighting stance, but Conner was not going to do hand to hand combat. Blast after blast power came after me and all I could do was run. I arrived in the dining hall where thousands of black-winged angels had the white-winged angels surrounded. "Holy." Conner stopped next to me.
"Attack them from behind," I whispered. I glanced around searching for Scarlet as I went through the servant passages, grabbing any black angel I could and slitting their throats. After the 15th angel's death, the white angels caught on and began fighting back.
"Brooke!" Scarlet's scream echoed through the big hall "Behind you!"
I turned around just in time to see a knife aiming at my face. "Now to where we left off," Conner grinned.
"Are you serious? They're in danger," I waved pointedly at the fighting angels.
"Who do you think sanctioned this?" Dread filled me. "Since Scarlet wanted to go behind my back and sleep with a human, I will make her life hell."
"By killing her family?" I shook my head in confusion.
"By ruining everything she's worked for! Leader of Light gets everyone killed because she betrayed her lover," Conner growled.
"Leader of Light?" Then the realization hit me. Scarlet, Leader of Light, was the reason I hadn't gotten to officially meet the leader. She was the leader the whole time. Conner went to plunge the knife into my stomach, at the last minuted I locked his wrist between mine and twisted. Conner took down two dark angels on his fall to his death, and all I could do was watch in horror and listen to Scarlet's distant screams as I swayed and fell with him.
