Chapter 6 - An Astonishing Crime

Marie grasped her bag in her palms and paced down the stairs; she was late again! It was nothing new for Marie; she had got the habit of being reprimanded by her boss every day at work. She quickly tied her brown lustrous, tangled hair at the bus station, hoping to catch the bus in time. She was grateful when she saw the bus approaching the bus station.

As she sat on the large green bus, her phone began ringing, and she knew immediately that it had to be Thomas, Marie's fiance. Thomas notified her with some breathtaking news, the construction of their new house had started; her dream was coming true!! It made Marie immensely pleased, and tears of joy dropped down her chocolate brown eyes. A few mins later, she got back to her senses and descended the bus at her stop.

She walked briskly into the restaurant, and hastily rushed to the kitchen. Marie was a passionate and creative chef at Le Chandeliers, who made sure her customers licked their fingers clean until the end of the food. As she opened the large squeaky door of the kitchen, a tall, stern man stood in front of him; it was her boss! She bowed her head down, in the guilt of being late again, however instead of being rebuked by her boss like always, she stood perplexed by the sudden clapping of hands. Her boss handed her promotion letter, stating that she had become a head chef! She closed her eyes and savoured the moment, but never released her grip on the seemingly inconsequential piece of paper in her hands. For the first time in forever, her body and mind relaxed. At that moment, there were no expectations upon her, no deadlines, and no schedules to meet. She had made it; she had achieved her dream!

After a while, when she regained control over her body she grabbed her phone and called Thomas. She was certain that Thomas would be flabbergasted by her promotion, and he would be incredibly proud of her. However, when she expressed her joy to Thomas, he didn't sound elated. There was a hint of jealousy in his voice, however, Marie disregarded this.

Thomas's insecurity of not being more successful than her fiance had allowed selfishness to grow within him, day by day hatred started developing in his heart for Marie. Her presence buzzed him like a fly that he could not swat. He avoided her calls and started maintaining distance. His hatred had made him immoral and wicked. After pondering agitatedly on a way to satisfy his ego, a sly smile developed on his face.

He called Marie's sister, Ella, and informed her about what he would do with Marie if she didn't follow his instructions. Ella was bound to protect her little sister, although she was frightened and horrified, she wanted to let Marie know about Thomas's intention but she was compelled by Thomas's intimidating warning. She had no choice but to succumb to his invitation to Hotel Louise.

On the day of their meeting, with a sense of foreboding, she walked towards Thomas. Her subconscious mind was constantly telling her that something ominous is going to happen. Obligated by her duties as an elder sister, she listened to Thomas's proposal. With malicious intent, he brisked his hands in her hair and pushed her on the hotel room bed. She quickly started backing up, and he started approaching her. He had lost all senses, and he was going to undress her forcefully. Ella shouted for help, but he shut her mouth up with his greasy hands. Panic-stricken and filled with terror she picked up the bottle of wine from the corner desk and started beating him. He opposed by clenching her fists, but she walloped him so hard that he had no sense left.

Ella stood awe-struck, everything had changed in a short lapse of time. SHE HAD MURDERED HER SISTER'S FIANCE! A tsunami of questions flooded her brain, what was she going to do with the body? How would she tell Marie about it? She had ruined everything!

She had to bury the body first, but where would she do so? If she buried him at a graveyard, people would know she had committed the crime. Hence, she picked up the body and packed him in the bag she found on the floor and put him in the trunk of her car. As she drove, she continued contemplating on where she should bury the body, and finally realized that the optimum location to bury him is at the construction site of Marie's new house. It was the safest location. While driving towards their home, her phone started ringing. It had to be Marie, she had found out about her fiance's death. Ella started to panic and avoided Marie's call. After hastily burying the body under their house she drove to Marie's apartment.

When Ella arrived, she saw Marie devastated, she sat down beside her and listened to her woes. Ella felt responsible and started cursing herself under her breath. She was filled with guilt and did not know how to console her sister. Rage filled within her, and she felt disappointed by herself.

Marie told Ella, that in memory of Thomas she is going to shift to their new house immediately after construction. Ella was so terrified that she had nothing to say, she was not mentally present. Flashbacks of the hotel room kept running through her brain. If she told Marie, would she ever believe her? The police investigation lasted for months, but they were unable to figure out the culprit or find Thomas's dead body. Ella tried fixing her sister's life but ended up ruining it for her.
