Synopsis

Prologue: The Selection

They say death is life's greatest gift and final conquest. It offers new possibilities in the new life as it also shed tears over the graves driven from words left unsaid and deeds left undone. It is a mystery that governs all that is alive.....until you are not.

"Ain't that a bitch..."

I inched closer to the fire that welcomed me when I gain my consciousness just a few-...I'm not sure how long I was trapped in this place. It is dark here, cold and devoid of anything else but complete emptiness. The only sound I could hear was the crackle of the flames and my own thoughts to keep myself busy.

Setting aside the fact that I'm slowly maybe going crazy being alone here for so long. I hardly remember anything in my life before I got here other than my name, and the fact that I was a basic white-collar worker in a big corporate that pays too little. I lived in a little apartment that is miraculously always 3 months due in rent for 5 years straight.

I also have a pet cat name, Tumtum, he shits and piss everywhere, scratches the furniture and bites me whenever he's in the mood. I still remember that I haven't fed him his favorite tuna brand when I left for work that morning. I hope someone would look after him. I love that little shitlord.

And of course, I have the picture-perfect memory of how I fucking died. It's not that big of a deal anymore when you're dead. Everything from this point on seems pointless and irrelevant really. You can choose to hate it or regret it. Thinking if you did something different back then maybe you could have lived. All those little things that movies portray after a person dying is completely wrong.

Because the bottom line is you're DEAD. And there's no coming back. In my case, dying was the better opinion. Simply because I don't think I'll be able to pay the hospital bills nor my therapist afterward if I ever did survive getting brutally stabbed 47 times. That's right. I counted them. The holes on my body where the knife sheathed itself inside me were still here. There was no blood, thankfully, and I feel no pain when poked around them.

Honestly speaking I did not think that the afterlife would be like this, I imagine it to be fiery hot, not that I prefer that it's just that I wasn't very religious before as far as I can remember. I just can't help but wonder why am I in a place like this. If I wasn't a bad person shouldn't I be in heaven or something? This place hardly seems like it, but it isn't hell either.

Does that mean I'm not qualified in either of the two? I wasn't good or bad enough. Did I simply exist with no real value? Was I put here because whoever runs this world doesn't know where to place me?

"I'm a fucking joke.."

I stared at the complete darkness while laying on my back with the light of this little bonfire beside me barely providing me clarity. I closed my eyes and surrendered to my fate.

"Whatever you have in store for me just do it!! I don't really care anymore! Do whatever you want with me. I'll be taking my sweet time here." I yelled into nothing, not caring if someone could be hearing me because I seriously doubt that could happen. I'm a nobody anyway.

I let the crackling flares comfort me through the coldness of this dark place and tried to remember as much as I can from my previous life. Maybe there are a few exciting moments in my life before I got here, It'll be nice to remember them."

As my mind slowly drifted away feeling my body almost melting comfortably in the darkness. I feel like I was at peace. I wanted to sleep and never wake up anymore. The cold doesn't seem to bother me anymore, it feels nice now. The darkness was welcoming me into them, I really like it there now. I didn't even care when the fire was snuffed out. All I cared about was the darkness that surrounds me and how cozy it suddenly feels. I feel tired and want to go to sleep. I also feel safe here now. I feel... okay.

"Is this what they called moving on?" I asked, but it didn't stay on my head for long. I was finally at peace. It doesn't matter what I say because I'll be resting for good now.

"Haaa, this is nic-"

"Huh??" A loud sound blasted in my head, making me sit upright.

What the hell is this supposed to be? It's disrupting my inner peace! What is this fancy-looking box floating in front of me!?? Why the hell is it so bright!!?

"No, get lost!" I immediately pressed, what I assumed to be the decline button for this thing.

"What the hell?! It repeated itself!!?" I pressed the No button again and again, but it just bugged out and repeated itself over and over in return. I don't even know what this is!!? Why can't it just away!? Patience was a virtue, and as a corporate slave, I know that all too well. But I also know when something is just flat-out pointless.

My eyes pointed at the Yes button and contemplated. "I mean, I could just ignore it-"

Six more boxes appeared in front of me, and each one is bigger than the previous ones. Not to mention it was gangbanging my brain inside out. They invaded my space until all that I can see was them flashing in front of me.

"..." They were getting to me by the minute, and then my irritation gets the best of me. "Fine!!!! ALRIGHT!! Stop!! I get it!! I'll do it!! Get it all the hell away from me already!!" I pressed the Yes button from the original box, and the six other boxes disappeared instantly.

The box disappeared as it displayed its last transmission, and I was alone again in the darkness. I waited for a good minute expecting something else to happen, but there was nothing.

"...Now what?"

What do I do now? The tiredness in me was gone, and the dark void no longer encased me! If anything else, they seem to be further away now. Did I miss my chance of being at peace? In the afterlife? I pulled myself up and seated with my legs crossed.

"What do I do now? Those stupid boxes ruined my chance!! I don't know what I should do now. It's dark and cold here again. The fire that comforted me before was also gone now. There is nothing for me here now. " I don't wanna be in here. The fear and anxiety that wasn't present since I'd woken up here finally came.

"Hhhaaaaaahhaa..." It's getting hard to breathe here. I feel like my lungs are closing in on me, which is really fucking weird since I'm dead, but I feel like dying again!! I tried to collect my thoughts together, but I can't at all. I'm so screwed!!

I started to let myself go and shed some tears that stung my eyes. "Someone please save me!! I don't wanna be in here anymore!!!" I cried. I know no one could hear me but still tried to call for help. Moments later I heard something aside from my own thoughts. It sounds like something was being broken down. Like a crack spreading across a glass window. Then I saw it.

There was light coming from above, I stood up and rubbed away the tears before squinting my eyes. It wasn't a trick, lights were coming from above like broken pieces from a puzzle and they were slowly growing. The cracking sound got louder as the light broke through the veil when it got too big. I reach out to a ray of light that found its way down here at the bottom near me. I remembered the outdoor and the warmth the sun gave, I can't believe I'll be able to feel this again.

"Arrghh!! What the hell!?? That's not warm, that's burning hot!!" I pulled it back when I felt the familiar sting like that of a hot iron pan on my hand. What is this!? My gaze returned to the cracked lights above, it looks like it was ready to break any moment. Then the realization hits me.

"Son of bi-" The lights broke through the darkness and along with it was the burning sensation throughout my body as it blinded me instantly. The last thing I heard before everything turned to white was the dinging sound that heralded those flashing boxes earlier.
