It was nightfall, a cold autumn nightfall. The darkness came early that day, a sign that a long winter was quickly approaching. But nobody knew just how much the world would change the next mourning.
As it got later in the evening, the small town where this story begins grew quieter and quieter as its residents went to bed. Eventually, only one person remained awake.Â
Kate usually stays awake until the crack of dawn. Even at a young age, she was never the type to sleep at night and on cold evenings she would escape from her warm room to wander the deserted and dimly lit streets of the neighbourhood.Â
Tonight was one of does nights, cold and chilly but just warm enough for her to bear without any form of outwear besides a thick wool hoodie. She walked with no destination in mind, no set path she knew where she would end back up. A house where the heater was always on, clean sheets, and hot meals made each day like clockwork. Everything a household should be and more yet it never truly felt like a real home to her. A cozy and comforting exterior, a shell hiding its true contents from the rest of the world and yet that was what she was supposed to call a home.Â
Maybe that's why she needed to escape in the night, all day playing like the perfect little doll, with no chance to speak her mind, no moment to be a child, and no kind and caring words for her.
Her meals may be warm but they were not made with love in mind, her bed clean and made each day but by a stranger only doing it because it's their job. No baby photos on the wall, no art projects on display, and no perfect grades on the fridge. That is the cold reality of the life of Kate Obonsawin.
For as long as she can remember her parents were callous, distant and Dispassionate towards her. Only paying special attention to her when flaunting her success to guests,
''Oh look at my daughter she got the highest mark on the final exam''
''Have you met my daughter, she set a new record in her last gymnastics competition"
" Julie is learning to play the bass? Well, you know... my Kate mastered the violin and piano by the age of 15 and she only started when she was 9, her tutors say she a genius''.
''Apparently, I'm only theirs when there is someone to brag to'' Kate thought to herself as she walked down the street.
Each house she passes grows more and more Luxurious. With tall gates fencing off the yard from any random passerby, beautifully made marble fountains spitting clean crystal clear water, and stunning gardens with dozens of wilting flowers.
'' All of it is surface level, all for nothing but show'.' She said angrily under her breath, looking at the pale night sky, she wondered '' Is this all I'm good for, a prize, a project that they get to flaunt whenever they want then leave, why... God...why?''
Staring at the sky she was bothered about what was her purpose. And like an answer from fate, she saw it, a small star emerged in the cloudless night sky. She stared in wonder as the shining star seemed to grow brighter and brighter. It grew larger and larger as it seemed to get closer and as it got bigger its colour turned from a bright white to an illuminating red. Suddenly a loud noise shook Kate to her core, she stumbled and fell to the ground. Still, even on the ground, she looked to the sky, as the sky was lit up for a brief seconds she continued to stare at its beauty.Â
The giant red ball in the starry night sky emitted a blinding ray of light as it seemed to shader into millions of tiny pieces, each producing a vibrant coloured light.Â
A sight that only a few truly fortunate souls got to see. The birth of a new age and all those who bear witness to this event would shake the pillars of society, for better or worse the world as they knew it would never be the same.
As Kate stared at the glistening lights, she noticed as one, appeared to approach her, while all the others disappeared in all directions. This one seemed to aluminate a deep dark red and kept growing brighter until...
BANG
The impact of the light hitting the ground shook the streets, dogs started barking, and a combination of hundreds of car alarms burst out creating a chaotic orchestra of jarring noise. Yet it did not faze the young girl, something took hold of her, something calling her from deep within guiding her to the crash site of the strange light.
As she upped the last fence, she saw in a small, small crater a tiny rock. Smooth and round like a marble, a mix of dark red and a translucent white. If you did not already know that something had landed in that very backyard you would have never found it.Â
The feeling guiding her got stronger and stronger calling her to pick up the stone. With no hesitation, she grabbed it and a shock of pure energy coursed through her body, images filled her mind. A gunshot, a fierce fire, a freezing breeze, a flash of pure sunlight and a man covered in intense darkness.
Through all of it, a name and a face popped into her head.Â
A scream broke her out of her trance-like state. "Mommy, there's someone outside".
As the lights of the house turned on Kate ran, the trance or vision still fresh in her mind she kept running but for the first time it did not feel like she was running away from something, she finally had a goal of her own, something she wanted to do.Â
"Blake D Kane"
She whispers, smiling to herself.
