Chapter 1 - Book 1: Water chapter 1

I DO NOT OWN AVATAR: THE LAST AIR BENDER OR ANY OF THE CHARACTERS. ANJI IS MY OWN CHARACTER OF MY OWN MAKING AND BELONGS TO ME. WHILE THE OTHER CHARACTERS OF AVATAR: THE LAST AIR BENDER BELONG TO NICKELODEON

THE TIMELINE IN THIS STORY WILL STICK TO THE STORYLINE BUT MAY HAVE MINOR CHANGES TO IT. DUE TO THE FACT THAT THERE WILL BE ANOTHER CHARACTER ADDED (ANJI). BUT I WILL TRY MY HARDEST TO STICK TO THE STORY

LINE.

Anji's POV

It was dark when the Northern Air Temple began to shake, as though an Earthbender took control of the rock the temple was placed upon. I was awoken from my sleep by one of the other Air Nomads

"The Fire Nation is here!" The monk said racing from my door to the next, to warn other Nomads about the arrival of the traitorous nation.

The sleep from my body leaving in an instant, and switching over to adrenaline, coursing through my veins to give me the energy to get up after a long days of practice and meditation with Linogo.

"No Linogo!" I jumped out of my bed grabbing clothes that were strewn about on the floor from the night before and throwing them on, I grabbed my staff and strapped it to my back and raced out the door.

I had heard a rumor that the Fire Nation was beginning a hostile takeover of the land around them. That they had started exterminating scared Air Temples. I hadn't believed in them..... Until now.

I mean this is one of the four nations, we had been living in peace, and harmony for centuries. How could they attack one of the most peaceful nations with no remorse. It made no sense!

I raced out of my room to find people screaming and yelling, shoving one another to get to the sky bison to evacuate before the other could. A lump started forming in my throat, what if they already got to Linogo? I raced through hallways, the lump quickly getting bigger, until I burst through a door revealing a solemn looking Linogo. His brown eyes once full of life now solemn looking.

"Monk Linogo what is happening, is the Fire Nation really attacking?" I asked hurriedly, knowing full well the answer to that question.

"It seems so my child." He said calmly, before I've been able to tell what the monk was feeling, but his face was devoid of emotions. I couldn't tell, and it scared me.

"Well what should we do? The people are evacuating on the bison, you should join them to. Before we run out of time!" I informed him, pointing my finger in the direction I just can from. Before I could even do so, I turn my head to the ledge of the balcony where a beautiful view once laid.

My breath hitch in my throat seeing the scene before me. Fire spread everywhere, while Fire Nation soldiers swarmed everywhere, killing anyone who wore the Air Temple clothing. The red and white auras everywhere, a lot of white auras where fading, my people are dying. I grabbed the staff that was attached to my back opening it with a flick of my hand readying myself to jump of the thick stone railing. Before I could do so, a hand wrapped itself around my arm.

"What are you doing, I have to help them!" I yelled over the destruction of my home, and my people. The monk shook his head and replied.

"No you need to go, you are the only hope this world has to regain balance." His words were firm, but it didn't stop me from fighting back, with the monk I called family.

"No! I'm not leaving without you! I already lost Aang, I can't lose you too!" I quickly shoot back, hoping the monk would give in, but Linogo was stubborn. He looked me dead in the eye, and shook his head.

"Anji, I have to stay here and protect our people, you must go and master the last three elements." He said firmly pushing me away from the balcony, and to the door. Tears streamed down my face hitting the cold floor.

"Then come with me!" I yelled, pleading the monk to not spare his life, but I knew that he would not budge.

"No, go and do not look back!" He yelled at me, more tears rolling down my face. I turned on my heel, running to the exit, made for my dragon specifically. I wanted terribly to look back at the monk, who stood on the balcony, but didn't dare, because I knew if I did, it would haunt me.

I knew Monk Linogo was right, but it still hurt running away from a battle. Ever since Aang had run away from the Southern Air Temple, I had started my Avatar training by myself. It hurt even more, when they moved me to the Northern Air Temple. All the memories Aang and I had made, playing, gossiping, eating, staying out past curfew. All of it, lost when they moved me.

Running down hallways, taking lefts, then rights, pushing past screaming people, dodging flame that was being thrown by Fire Nation soldiers, but I knew they were looking for me. The Fire Nation wanted to kill me, so it would be easier to take over to other nations. But I still ran, ran as fast as I could to the secret exit that only I knew about, that I could use to get away from the horde of Fire Nation soldiers, that wants me dead.

When I got to the secret exit, my dragon was already there, and ready to go with things I may need for my journey. I ran over to my dragon, Boe, and hugged her tightly getting a slobbery lick from her. Boe was kinda like me, she was special, she could change how big or small she was, which at times was very convenient. She was a beautiful shade of blue that got light as you went down her body.

I looked at my dragon's golden eyes, the ferocity lacing the looks she gave to me, the same one I gave to her once more. We were both furious, and devastated, but we both knew what had to be done in order for this to end. Using the air around me to propel myself onto Boe. I looked back once more seeing the door to the secret exit starting to move inward, the Fire Nation soldiers found it. Their red auras all jumbled together, there were hundreds of them, we were no match for them.

"Boe, yip yip." I yelled, knowing full well this is the last time that I will be seeing my home again, I wanted to believe that this is all just a terrible dream, but, not matter how hard I seemed to pinch myself, I didn't wake up.

My dragon pushed off the ground, propelling her and I forward through a hole, that was just big enough for us to fit through. Once we were through the hole, she flew up until we were just under the clouds

I know I shouldn't, but I looked back once more to a scene that would haunt my dreams, for the rest of my life. The temple that I lived in, the place that I called home, was now in flames that shown so brightly it lit my face up, horror etched across my face. Screams erupting from the temple. All of the memories, all of my people gone in the blink of an eye, tears rolled down my face in mourning of my home, my people.

I turned away from temple in hope that someone would survive, that I would have someone to turn to, that was from my Air Temple, hoping that I wasn't the last airbender. As the light from the flaming temple vanished a single sob escaped from my mouth, Boe growled sadly knowing that me, her owner was in such pain. I held my breath, and slowly exhaled trying to calm myself, trying to stay strong. Wiping the tears away from from my face I sniffled, still trying to get ahold of myself. Eventually I managed to clam down, but as soon as I did, I realized that we were above a vast ocean. I cursed aloud, to tired to try and contain it.

"Boe, did you bring us to the ocean on purpose?" I asked anger bubbling up inside me. The dragon let out a whimper, making me feel slightly guilty for snapping at her.

"I'm sorry for snapping at you Boe." I apologized quickly, trying not to let the lose of my people, make me lash out. But before another word could be said, rain started pelting against my face making me grimace, seeing the grey clouds start to settle above Boe and myself. The rain was weighing both of us down making my dragon roar in attempt to gain altitude. But we got nowhere, a wave came crashing down on us throwing Boe and I into the icy depths.

As the dark void of nothingness took hold of us, my lungs burnt for air, my grasp on Boe's reigns slipping, my eyes stung from the salt of the ocean, and the air from my lungs started leaving. My eyes began to get heavy, my hand now fully releasing the hold on the reigns. When a woman began to speak.

"Is this really how you will end it? That is all it will take to end you Avatar Anji? A measly storm is what you will let be your demise? I will not let you end this way." The woman asks in a harsh tone, I opened my eyes in vain to see if it was someone underneath me. If she was there to save me.

I was going to die, just like the rest of my people, making their attempts to save, me in vain. I am ashamed of myself.

"I will not let you die this way, after everything we did for your brother on this side of the spirit world. I shall lend you our power for now. But know this, when you awaken you will be met by a world where you have to rely on yourself and your friends. Be brave Anji, be strong."

Her finale words echoing inside my head. Who was she? Was she a past life? What power? Before I could think of another question, immense power began to flow through my veins.

My eyes and tattoos began to glow white, as a feeling that I can't explain but pure and utter power washed over me. My hand clasped around the reigns again, and an ice bubble began to form around myself and my dragon, who had shrunk to the size of a mother turtle-duck. The bubble froze completely, my tattoos were no longer glowing and nor were my eyes. Was that the Avatar state that Linogo had talked about?

My eyes began to droop, I was exhausted and tired, mentally and physically. But this was for certain, that I would make the Fire Nation pay, for what they did to my people, my family.

I, Avatar Anji, would make the Fire Nation pay, for the innocent Air Nomads that were murdered this day. I will make sure of it.

"Anji come on hurry up!" Aang's voice yelled over to me, I looked around, this isn't where I was, why am I in the Southern Air Temple, and where is Boe, I questioned to myself. I looked over to Aang, to see him vanish before me.

"AANG!!" I screamed running over to where he once stood, I looked around hoping to catch a glimpse of the orange and blue the boy I called my brother wore. Only to see the hundreds of Air Nomads that lived in my temple vanish before me as well.

"NO!" I screamed turning around, to be meet by a warm pair of brown eyes, that I once looked at with love, but now I look at them with shock and utter sadness.

"Linogo? Is that you?" I questioned not wanting to get to close, but at the same time wishing, that I could hold him in a tight embrace.

"Yes my child, it is really me." He said calmly holding out his arm signaling for me to hug him, I ran to him immediately wishing I didn't. Because when he was a fingertips reach away he vanished as well, leaving me alone. I was alone, and scared, and sad.
