Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Birthday Surprise

Life is full of surprises. You never know what's going to be thrown at you and you're just going to have to deal with it. I'd end up getting the biggest surprise of my life when I turned fifteen. Things were pretty ordinary for me up until that point. I grew up in a loving family. I always had my mother, father, and older brother. We got into some arguments every now and then but we rarely ever stepped on each other's toes.

It was the day before my birthday. The house was nice and quiet like usual so I could relax. I sat on my bed in my room which I didn't have to share with anyone. My brother and I were lucky to each get our own rooms. I expected the day to be normal, but that all changed when my dad knocked on my bedroom door.

"Come in." I said.

My dad walked inside and sat himself down next to me.

"We need to talk." he said.

I looked at the brown-haired man with blue eyes and a bit of stubble.

"What about?" I asked.

"It's about your mother." he said.

"If it's about her, can't she talk about it?" I asked.

"She's out shopping right now." my father responded.

"Is there any reason it can't wait until she comes home?" I asked.

"If we don't talk about this now," he said, "there's a good chance we're going to forget."

"Is it that important?" I asked.

"Well, if we don't say something about it," my father answered, "you may or may not be freaking out tomorrow."

"Fine." I said, "What is it that you want to say to me?"

"Your mother isn't from Earth." he said.

What he said caught me off guard.

"What?" I said.

"Your mother is an alien." my father replied.

"Why are you telling jokes?" I asked.

"This is no joke." he said.

I had no idea what he was going on about. Honestly, I was afraid that my father had lost it.

"You can't be serious." I said, "There's no way she's an alien."

"It may be hard to believe now," he said, "but it's the truth."

"You can stop lying to me now." I said.

"You're almost fifteen, aren't you?" he said.

"Yeah?" I replied, "What of it?"

"We'll be seeing if you the 'potential' tomorrow." said my dad.

"Potential?" I responded, "Potential for what!?"

"The power that runs in her side of the family."

"This... is nonsense!"

"And if you do have the potential, your body will change."

"That's enough!"

"But wait. There's more!"

"No, no, no! Stop with this alien crap already!"

I then stomped out of my own room. It took me a second to realize that I should have kicked my dad out instead. The sound of footsteps entered my ears less than a minute later. In front of me was a guy about a year older than me. Like me, he had light brown hair and green eyes. However, I was a bit taller than him and my hair was better taken care of.

"What's the matter?" he asked.

"Dad's just going on about a bunch of bullcrap." I answered, turning to face my older brother.

"Ah, right." he said, "It's your turn now, isn't it?"

"My turn?" I responded, "Sam, what do you mean?"

"Dad talked to me about the same thing a while back." answered Sam.

"So he lied to you too?" I asked.

"You should probably start taking him more seriously." replied Sam.

"But it's a lie, isn't it?" I responded.

"If you actually have the potential, then maybe you'll believe?" he said.

"So you're in on this too?" I asked.

"I didn't believe it at first either, but something happened." said Sam, "Just give it time."

After that, he just walked off. I couldn't believe it. Sam was saying the same stuff our dad was. He had lost it as well. My mom came home from the store pretty late and I couldn't sleep because of all that crap. Since I was still up, I decided to help her bring groceries in. However, I couldn't get what Dad and Sam said out of my head.

"What's the matter?" asked my mother.

"Oh, it's nothing." I said.

"Are you sure?" she asked.

I looked at her. Could my mother really be an alien? She looked human to me. Was it a disguise or did aliens look just like us?

"Dad was saying some pretty crazy things earlier," I said, "he said something about you being an alien, but there's no way that-"

"It's true." she said.

"What?" I responded.

"I can understand why you wouldn't believe it." my mother replied, "However, it'll probably become clear tomorrow."

"You saying you'll prove it tomorrow?" I asked.

"It'll be harder to prove if you don't have the potential." she said.

Great. So, my whole family was insane! At least, that's what I thought at the time.

"Whatever." I said, "I'm just going to go to bed after this."

After everything was put away, I changed into my pajamas and went to bed. Little did I know, this was the last time I would ever sleep looking the way I did. When I woke up the next morning, my body felt lighter. What was even weirder was that my hair felt longer and my chest felt a little different as well, but I was too tired to even think about why. Rubbing my eyes, I slowly get myself out of bed and left my room. At the same time, Sam came out of his.

"Good morn-" he started, "Mom! Dad!"

After that, he ran down the hallway.

"Why are you running in the house?" I asked.

Then I froze. Was that really my voice? Why did it sound higher than it was the day before? I shook my head, thinking I might have caught something. Then, my parents and Sam came running to me.

"So he did have it..." my father commented.

"What are you talking about?" I asked.

"Have you not looked in the mirror yet?" asked my mother.

"N-no." I said, "Why?"

"Then go do it." instructed my brother.

I wasn't really sure what everyone was freaking out over, but I figured I should take a look in the mirror like everyone suggested. I went into the bathroom and looked in the mirror. I saw something strange. Inside the mirror was a girl who looked a lot like me.

"Who is that!?" I exclaimed.

"It's you." answered my brother, who was standing by the doorway.
