Chapter 2 - Banging Head Injuries

My heart pounded and adrenaline flowed through my veins, the engine of the car I had just stolen was whirling away as I sped down the road. Cops were hot on my tail and it wasn't looking good for me.  I signaled with my blinker to the left and then took a sharp right, hoping to throw them off my trail. But it was pointless, they followed me. By now they had learned all my tricks, they've arrested me enough times to learn them.

My headlights were out and it was dark. Most of the streetlights were out as well so I was navigating the road completely by memory, which probably wasn't the best idea considering that I've only been in town for a few weeks. I swerved right hoping to make the turn onto the next street,  but I missed, there was a road sign right in the way of my new path. I tried taking a hard left to avoid it, but it was pointless. I crashed right into the sign and my airbag flew out. My head was thrown back and l hit the headrest with a hard bang! Then, I regretfully admit, that I blacked out, and along with losing conscious, I lost a bit of my dignity.

I was awoken by an annoying constant beeping, that I recognize as the sound of a hospital heart monitor. My whole body was aching and head was pounding, so I kept my forest eyes squeezed shut. I tried moving my arm slightly, but it was held in place by a cold metal that could only be from handcuffs. I froze as I heard footsteps enter the room, followed by a loud nasally voice I couldn't recognize. And since I didn't recognize it, I decided to keep sitting still and listen to what the new strangers were saying.

The nasally voice from before, that I could now label as a higher pitched man, continued to speak as the footsteps got closer. "Her  drivers license says her name is Nikita Vladimir, age 22, from Washington State. Nurse Kyle, did you pull up her medical records?" From this I came to the conclusion that the nasaly voice was one belonging to the doctor treating me. A man's voice responded, and I could only assume that it was 'Nurse Kyle'.

"Yes Doctor Jenkins, she broke her arm once when she was 16. Back then she said that she had broken it by landed on it after jumping off the roof of her ex's house? That doesn't sound right…" The voice of the confused nurse trailed off and I held back my giggles. He was talking about the time when I broke up with Carl, my ex boyfriend, and tried to make a dramatic exit… I felt bad because he ended up having to take me to the hospital while covered in salty breakup tears.

I was broken out of my thoughts when l heard a door creak open and a few pairs of footsteps following it.

"Are you the family?" The voice, who I now recognized as Dr. Jenkins, asked. I held my breath at the question, had they contacted my parents? They shouldn't have, I had made sure to change my emergency contact from them to Finn when I had left.

I waited but there was no response, the doctor continued after a short pause. "She was in a car accident, there was minimal damage, but she was knocked out and had been in a coma for 3 days now. We have no idea when she'll wake up, and if she does she might have temporary or permanent memory loss. You should know though,  that if she wakes up in perfect health the police are charging her with theft."

"And if she's not in perfect health?" The feathery voice that could only be from my mother responded. Now I was curious, could I benefit from this and avoid going to prison?

"If she isn't in perfect health, she will be sent home with you depending on the severity of the problem, and the police will have no choice but to refrain from charging her." The doctor responded.
